Tasted by RockinCabs on 9/18/2023 & rated 92 points: Same bottle as EC. To me, this showed really well. Classically Talbot of the era with loads of cedar, cassis, tobacco, funky mushroom and forest floor. Very nice personality, and surprising density and a nice briney squid ink note. (1088 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 9/17/2023 & rated 94 points: These are outstanding examples of fully mature Bordeaux wines that make you take it all in. When we talk about sensual wines, this is a sensual wine capable of filling a whole room with pungent scents of earth, clay, barnyard, beef ajus, coupled with that pretty dry potpourri and night flower ending. Really classy and debonaire, and a great example of a fine Bordeaux. Ready to drink, but not at risk. DRINK (1023 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/17/2023 & rated 88 points: The 1981 Gruaud Larose is a pleasant surprise; the nose is a little low-key but it expands nicely on the palate with blackberry, squid ink, and black coffee. There’s a whisper of brett that is inconspicuous enough to avoid distracting. I’m surprised still to see so much tannin in the mouth; it’s not coarse or unpleasant, just surprising given the vintage (now age 42). (1552 views)
Tasted by Echovineyards on 5/13/2023 & rated 97 points: 1981 Gruaud La Rose. We opened this 42 year old Bordeaux at a Mano restaurant,San Francisco with a Durand at Mike’s birthday celebration. John and Steven attended. The cork was 90% moist with one seepage spot. The wine exhibited some bricking but had an aromatic nose. The flavors were forward and fruity. Black currant, red raspberry, tobacco, leather, cassis and smoke dominated. The wine was medium bodied and very well balanced, slightly passed the peek of maturity. This was the most profound 81 tasted in years. (1079 views)
Tasted by bucktooth22 on 4/8/2023 & rated 93 points: 42 year old bottle. Bloody color. On 👃 red fruits and secondary notes well balanced — ripe strawberries , wet forest floor, peppercorn, leather. On 👅 , dry, medium acidic, smooth tannins, strawberries & walnut. (1151 views)
Tasted by Condrieu82 on 4/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Claret color with bricking. Beautiful nose of cherries, leather, forest floor. Very nice acidity, integrated tannins, leather and warm spice on the mid-palate, faint mushrooms, then tart cherries and cranberries come out. The finish is medium-long, with hints of cedar and a touch of hot alcohol. This bottle was definitely better than the one I had a couple years back - very much still alive. Drink now or in the next 3-4 years. (595 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 1/14/2023: Attenuated, threadbare, drying out, mean, lean & effectively undrinkable. Excuses might be made but this bottle over the hill. (Three previous bottles over the past two decades had been VGI. As H Waugh said........) (1065 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 12/24/2022: magnum. This was really a surprise from an unheralded vintage. Very charming and composed with a classic Larose profile. Good provenance and the format made this a lovely lunch wine. (1000 views)
Tasted by Vinophil2000 on 12/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Flasche vor etwa 10 Jahren für etwa 30 € + Versandkosten bei ebay erworben. Immer in Dormagen gelagert. (824 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 6/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Derrald opened the 1981 from his cellar, what a special treat, nose of black berry, black currants, saddle leather, cedar, cigar box, forest floor, and allspice, same on the palate, enjoyed several pours over 2 hours, big body, fully mature and drinking great, very tasty, mouth filling fruit, showing its age but deservedly so, long finish, lovely aftertaste, thank you Derrald for sharing! Photo uploaded. (1383 views)
Tasted by paulst on 8/14/2021 & rated 95 points: Tar and leather; smooth currant; fully integrated; silky and smooth; long sweet elegant finish. (2782 views)
Tasted by bucktooth22 on 6/21/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened in 2021 (40 years old). Beautiful old age wine color. Strong Raspberry, plums, leather fragrance. Cherry, sour, dry, low alcohol, frontal gripping tannins still there. (2303 views)
Tasted by Condrieu82 on 5/31/2021 & rated 91 points: Leather is what comes to mind in the nose, with some mellow plum aromas. Round, still fresh on the palate, with very well-integrated tannins, cherries, more leather, earthy notes, some black tea. Very good still - and definitely a treat. (2299 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 2/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Excellent old cordier era Gruaud Larose. Cedary with dark berries, leather, charcuterie and smokey herbs. Fully mature wine in a sleeper vintage. Personally I slightly prefer the 1980. (2664 views)
Tasted by mye on 2/23/2021: Blinded, and initial whiff of smoke, green pepper, mushroom, and tea. Some mellow dark fruit notes, with pepper, and cocoa powder. Complex, delicious. wow. I was pretty sure it was a mid 2000s Loire Cab Franc. Nope. 30 years off. Dang. Lovely lovely stuff. (2547 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 1/22/2021 & rated 89 points: Big lunch at Nicolas. Pair of 1981 Bordeaux brought by ST.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Thin legs.
Nose medium intensity, with aromas of tobacco, black licorice, dark plum. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), resolved medium+ tannin, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of red plum, black plum, tobacco, dark leather, black licorice. Medium+ finish.
Good quality. Still quite alive with fruit, though intensity feels a little weak. Unexciting feels. Drink up. (1908 views)
Tasted by seijaro on 11/5/2020 & rated 87 points: It's still drinkable and has some Cab flavor, but it's clearly OLD. Browning, of course, and a bit of punky nose that blows off, lots of sediment. With all that, it wasn't really enjoyable, we had a couple of glasses and abandoned it in favor of a CA Pinot. (1825 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 5/30/2020 & rated 92 points: A pleasant surprise. Looked old, quite brown, but tasted fresh.

Previously 1966, 1990, 2004, 2008 and 2010 of this wine. (2293 views)
Tasted by vinero on 3/29/2019 & rated 90 points: Pronounced acidity and dominant tertiary aromes like leather and plum. Overall a very complex wine, but a bit desintegrated and definitely not to the liking of everybody. Drink up. (2837 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 7/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Dinner with Mike Grammer (Francisca's (3047 Mission St)): Perfectly mature nose, bell pepper, mature black fruit, smoke; palate is medium bodied, fully mature red fruit, integrated and fading tannins; medium finish. Classic mature Bordeaux. 90 (4154 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 6/26/2018: Decanted off the sediment an hour before drinking at a restaurant in glasses that did the wine no favors. The nose is lovely, with rich, earthy, and darkly fruited aromas that are generous and graceful, while not terribly complex. The palate is not as elegant as the nose, although it is delicious, but the tannins are drying at the finish. This wine feels resolved to me - it's as good as it will be, and it offers a lot of pleasure. Very solid in a not-so-good vintage. (4622 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 5/23/2018 & rated 93 points: What a fantastic surprise. Classic aged ST Julien.
Won’t get better but has more legs left.

Tasted by TastdaTore on 10/29/2017 & rated 92 points: 1981 Chateau Gruaud Larose, Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classe

Back to the eighties, continues...

Testet hjemme i Lier, fredag 06.10.2017

Tasted by jsternh on 8/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Was very surprised at the continuing quality of this wine. Pulled this out of the cellar, not expecting much. Still going strong. A perfect example of a mature St. Julien. (3116 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
