Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Fatty Cat on 12/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Xmas day dinner 2023: decanted for approx. 30 minutes (cold storage); clear straw-like color; opulent bouquet with notes of peaches, apples, and citron plus hints of exotic fruits and petrol; smooth, round texture with a reserved acidity on the palate; medium body. 92/100

As the evening went on this wine showed better and better and so I decided for an upgrade to 93/100.

14% vol. alcohol. (312 views)
Tasted by Gavin Sutherland on 5/15/2022: Past it’s prime but still tasty for a 25yr old pinot gris! The nose smells like the wine is going to be sweeter than it is. Apricots, slight sherry notes, acidity still present and reasonable length (955 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 2/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Orange color. Needed some time to get to room temperature to reveal its flavors. Round body and smooth mouthfeel. Orange peel, lemons and cloves. Medium to long finish. (1507 views)
Tasted by MichaelM1 on 12/25/2020 & rated 95 points: Aged gracefully. Golden color. Stone fruit. Mid sweet - pre 1 to 5 rating. I’d guess level 3 or 4. Stores at 53/54 from release. Coravin pour (1432 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 1/19/2020 & rated 88 points: Deep orange color. A bit waxy mouthfeel. Petrol and some spice. Apricots and oranges. Feels a bit disjointed. Just doesn't give much drinking pleasure. (1731 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 10/10/2019 & rated 97 points: As with any wine 20 plus years old the integrity of the bottle/cork and quality of cellaring bear as much responsibility as the juice within - so it is with this wine nurtured at 55F in dark cellar since purchase in late 90’s - this is a beautiful lively luminescent clear yellow honey straw colored wine with well-deep pure mineral floral citrus oil white/ stone fruited aromas and flavors. Remarkable stuff. Vindicates cellar hassles. Gonna put another case or two of this away and fuggittaboutit for a decade or so. (1734 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 10/1/2017 & rated 90 points: Oxidative nose that still has some diesel resiling aroma. Oily. One note from the table included 'McDonald's french fries'. Highly tropical. Fun drinking. Bill Koch bottle. (2316 views)
Tasted by sfwineguy on 5/13/2017 & rated 85 points: Over the hill, disappointing as I had expected a 20-year old Z-H grand Cru to still have life in it. (2141 views)
Tasted by Marc on 11/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Sparkling at 70 (Ekatahuna, New Zealand): Rich and intense with a modicum of residual sugar. A touch of botrytis on the nose and palate add to an ostentatious and fine bottle of Riesling. Opulent fruit with considerable minerality. The opulence is emphasised by the lower acid nature of the wine. The thick texture of the wine was a special feature. Certainly fully mature and a beautiful drink. (2756 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 10/29/2015 & rated 89 points: A tiny bit more zip in this bottle than my previous. Color continues to get darker orange. Classic petrol and wax. Hint of nuttiness. Decent minerality. Drink up (2861 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 4/11/2015 & rated 82 points: Not having a lot of luck with our aged Alsatian Rieslings lately. Medium orange in color, which is not a good sign. The nose is pretty with dried apricots, sugar, spice, tea, nuts. Palate is dried out and somewhat weak and watery with tea, spice. Not horrible, but not good. Finish is weak and bitter with nuts and tea. This bottle doesn't seem fundamentally flawed, just advanced. Nose - 4-4.5/6, Palate - 3.5/6, Finish - 3/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 11-11.5/20. (3734 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Dinner with Friends (Juno - Chicago IL): Richa romatic start with petrol, candied orange peel, ginger, orchard and peach hints. Same fruit flavors with good richness, virtually bone dry. (3435 views)
Tasted by ron m on 12/20/2014: Classic mature Zind. Petrol, lanolin, honey, apples; Rich, powerful, not sweet, somewhat unfocused; Tons of minerals; Solid finish. Better on day 2! (2382 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 12/14/2014 & rated 88 points: I wish I had been able to track this over the years. This bottle just seemed tired and flat. Still enjoyable, not at all sweet, enough acidity to stand up to food. Overall very unremarkable. (2331 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 7/21/2013 & rated 93 points: Mid amber and viscous made me anticipate some sweetness, yet none followed. Rich, yet not hard to drink. A dead on pairing with the kimchi oyster at Benu. Very good and certainly at no risk of fading. (3213 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 5/1/2013 & rated 88 points: Hearts Delight Collectors Dinner: Heavy petrol, dry and smooth. (3299 views)
Tasted by jonradus on 4/27/2013 & rated 99 points: Unreal. Not sure it can get any better. Great, nutty nose with baked pear. Sandalwood, candied lemon, and orange liqueur taste with fantastic length and acidity. The finish was timed at 45s. This is an unbelievable wine, in a great place right now. (3050 views)
Tasted by uberoh on 2/11/2013 & rated 94 points: mature - wiff of petrol, good fruity and structure - very enjoyable.... (3037 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 10/13/2012 & rated 94 points: Drank at Home

Nice mature Riesling with a rich nose of earth, smoke and minerality. Lovely rich taste with a great balance (3171 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 4/10/2012 & rated 93 points: Rich, dry but well-rounded; deep nose, elegant Riesling acidity, earth, smoke and minerals, peach and yellow prune, beautifully ripe; powerful, full, good weight, concentrated, ripe acidity providing good grip; slightly light on the finish, rarefied. Has power and finesse, top quality, at peak. Now - 2012. (2761 views)
Tasted by KellyW on 8/16/2011 & rated 94 points: Drinking perfect now. Hints of petrol on top of fresh melon and pit fruit. Honey and orange zest. Nice stony palate. (3545 views)
Tasted by Mingmong on 4/5/2011 & rated 93 points: Dinner for Joe and Crystal (Ming Kee): Forrest floor, musky cardboard nose. Honey, mineral, lemons, orange peel, very well structured wine, fine smooth acidity, well balanced and elegant. Long finish with an alluring aftertaste, delicious! (3808 views)
Tasted by kenv on 4/1/2011 flawed bottle: Oxidized. (3407 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 3/29/2011 & rated 93 points: Slightly golden. Still feels very young. The nose is stone-driven, petrol floral with some tropical fruit. Just a hint of nuttiness, but nothing oxidized. Palate has rich, penetrating fruit that is kept light by acidity and mineral, giving a sense of finesse. Quite long complex aftertaste. Great expression of Riesling and figuring my last bottle has at least 5-10 years (but is ready now IMO). (3306 views)
Tasted by tooch on 12/9/2010 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Lotus of Siam (Lotus of Siam, Las Vegas): Great golden color. Nose is mature and shows some paint thinner, petrol, honeycomb, and crushed rocks. Palate showed a rich roasted nut tone with some orange blossoms. For my palate, this is still very fresh and alive. Got plenty of time left to go! (3965 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
