Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by blanquito on 11/20/2020: I enjoy a lot, but not quite as much as some others as lacks some of the electric acidity I look for in Austrian Riesling. A little more peachy-apply than citric, rounded mouthfeel with good fruit and terrific length. Shows a touch of fresh herbs too. Fully in the zone. 91-92 pts. (1136 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 11/14/2020 & rated 94 points: I've been on a Austrian kick for a while now and Nigl has risen to the top of the heap for me and this was no exception. Peachy, lemony, herbal nose. Palate is sweetly fruited with a real rocky salinity that gives nice texture and definition to it all. Brilliant stuff at maturity now. (1269 views)
Tasted by coremill on 6/15/2019 & rated 90 points: Shocking youthful, this doesn't come across as 20 years old at all. Clean, pure, green fruit, sweet herbs, rocks on the back end, nice length. (1532 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 4/27/2018 & rated 95 points: Utterly spellbinding showing for this wine, which seems to be at its peak. Crisp, mature apples and pears, minerals and a bucket-load of refreshing saline acidity. So balanced and so drinkable. A delight for those who crave rocks in their glass of Riesling. (1931 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/2/2017 & rated 94 points: Mostly 1994 Cal Cabs (Treva, West Hatrford): Another wonderful showing... so much stone, saline, citrus, rainwater and chalk. So much lip-pursing acidity... Not sure how long this will live, but I would not be afraid to continue to cellar this... although it's delicious now. UPDATE: On day two, I was better able to look at the color, which seemed a bit darker than I remember. The flavors seemed a bit more evolved and dried out. Perhaps not one to hold for the long term?  Tasted by salil on 10/20/2015 & rated 95 points: This is in the zone. Just an absolutely spectacular bottle of wine, drinking superbly right now with an array of ripe orchard fruits, lemon cream, mature smokiness, and a remarkably vivid stony/saline mineral character. Each sip seems to start with fruit up front, but turns savoury and rocky on the back end, leaving the impression that this came partly from fruit and partly from a rock quarry. The balance is impeccable, with powerful acidity keeping it really fresh and light on its feet, and incredible length. (2544 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/20/2015 & rated 96 points: Wines with biryani (Milford, CT): This was utterly breathtaking; so much drive and punch. Very sleek, svelte and shimmering on the palate with perhaps the most minerality I've encountered in a wine for some time. The endless finish was a lip-pursing, saline, and drenched with wet stones. Wow. (2201 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 3/28/2015 & rated 94 points: My second bottle of the nice little 1999 Austrian horizontal I recently acquired. It's brighter and more vivacious than bottle #1, the Jamek Klaus, the fruit here all lemons and pineapples and bright neon yellow with just a slight bit of kerosene as a hint of its age. It's laced with a chalkiness that contributes to its sense of freshness, along with a ripping, serrated texture. (8025 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 10/16/2013: Delicious. No premox here. (2197 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 9/9/2013: delicious (2097 views)
Tasted by gripNsip on 8/15/2013 & rated 88 points: Tasted in a line-up amongst sweet and dry Rieslings, and this may have suffered a bit due to that. The nose definitely did, coming from the sweet stuff the nose seemed rather austere showing just ripe lemons and not much else. Very acidic when tasted but very brightly fruited, again reminding me of fresh lemons. The acidity here is quite intense but is nicely balanced to the intensity of the fruit flavors, both are very powerful. The wine finishes nicely with loads of residual acidity sticking the insides of the mouth. (1729 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 11/19/2011: Jonathan and Gail come to NYC (Il Corso): This showed much, much less evolved than the bottle I had in April. Pale and not showing much on opening, it blossomed after double-decanting and waiting awhile. It took on richness -- Jonathan thought it sweet, like a German Spatlese -- and had a lovely texture. Interesting showing. (3008 views)
Tasted by chcook on 7/5/2011 & rated 90 points: color straw. nose showing mostly minerality, caramel peaches and white chocolate. palate shows creamy saline texture with mouth watering acidity, finish medium length and slightly tart. holding up much better than the 2000 for sure, but i don't expect an upside with waiting. (2297 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 4/10/2011: At peak, perhaps just nudging past the apex. Not showing oxidation, but the color is a light gold. Full bodied an rich, giving the impression of sweetness, still showing tropical fruits with floral overtones. Don't think this has anything in reserve. (2105 views)
Tasted by austinwinesalon on 11/14/2010: Austrian and Spanish Wines on the Fino patio (Fino Restaurant, Austin, Texas): Tthe favorite of the flight (12 tasters), with lots of acidity and a nose of Riesling petrol/diesel, this wine was quite well-balanced and seemed younger than its decade-plus. It was rich and brought out white peach to the tip of the tongue, had flavors of red delicious and macintosh apple, under-ripe pear, “mint meets necco wafer,” white flower, and meyer lemon. (3028 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 3/5/2010 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Steve & Barb's house. Light yellow in color, this medium bodied wine has a zingy acidity to it and apple flavors. With time in the glass this wine seemed to fill out particularly on the long finish seeming to indicate it needs more time to really show what it has to offer. 50+12+12+8.5+8.5 = 91+ (1979 views)
Tasted by wurzel68 on 1/17/2010 & rated 89 points: Mittleres goldgelb; subtile mineralische/florale Noten; etwas Zitrus, etwas Maracuja; am Gaumen mittlere Säure, mittlere Körper, langer Abgang, leicht bitterer, akzentuierender Unterton; sehr vielschichtig. Spannender Wein. (2021 views)
Tasted by ChrisR on 9/20/2009 & rated 89 points: Pretty floral aromas, gentle lemon on the palate. Round and soft, but lean, not flabby. I thought it was nice, in an understated way. (2068 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 1/26/2008: This is entering early prime-time to my taste. It has picked up some rich sweetness from bottle aging and has plenty of fruit (if that's a turn-off, you might want to wait), but the layers, and layers and layers, beneath are fully apparent. Gorgeous stuff. White floral notes, tons of minerals, and a finish that goes on and on. (2311 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 1/22/2008 & rated 89 points: Open That Bottle Night at St Jacques. Light yellow in color and showing much better than the 2000. Floral nose. Nice acidity throughout this dry riesling. 50+12+11+8+8 = 89 (2295 views)
