Tasted by johnrm on 4/17/2024 & rated 89 points: Excellent fruit with attractive spice. A deep, complex, very long palate with plenty of soft acidity and mature tannin. Well worth keeping to this age to allow it to show its strengths. Good with food and equally rewarding on its own. 89+ (199 views)
Tasted by johnrm on 6/25/2023 & rated 89 points: Another year of development and it showed good red and black fruits and some spice on the nose, as before. Juicy acidity and tannins meant that it was good with food. Afterwards, not so good; the acidity and tannin seemed too prominent and gave the palate a slightly ‘hard’ edge.
Note. After 24h+ the dark damson fruit was more forward and the acid/tannin softer and better balanced. I have raised my score by a point.
We tasted another bottle in late September 2023 and, given 2-3 hours to open and soften a little, it was excellent both with food and, later, on its own. Half a bottle was at least as good next day. This wine has legs. 89+ (624 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 6/10/2023 & rated 85 points: Drank this with my spouse at Cameron Highlands Resort, Cameron Highlands.

Dark purple in colour with notes of black currants. Some blueberries, milk chocolate and liquorice. Definitely needs food to bring out the best in the wine.

Was hoping for a bit more excitement from The Footbolt. Lacks the intensity, concentration and complexity to be a great wine. (634 views)
Tasted by signotim on 5/28/2023 & rated 87 points: Very tasty Shiraz. Medium body and pure, dark fruit flavors. Would buy again for sure. (644 views)

Tasted by johnrm on 7/22/2022 & rated 89 points: As before, this was immediately approachable with good fruit and some spice on the nose. Fragrant red and black fruits with plenty of juicy acidity. The tannins had softened after a couple more years and the wine accompanied food very well. This is developing nicely. It was bought on a Cunard Cruise Ship on the basis of our enjoyment at home earlier. (1449 views)
Tasted by macaujames on 11/12/2021 & rated 90 points: 89/90. Has decent aromas of blackberries, liquorice, cherries, cedar and leather with pepper hints. Its medium bodied solid lightly peppery +cedary chewy black, forest fruits and cherries palate ends longish, fresh and tapering. 14.5%. Decent value at 15 Euros. Drink up soon. I'm unsure how long this can keep. A bit old world in style like a Guigal Cotes du Rhone. (3151 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 10/23/2021 & rated 92 points: Hue deep purple. Nice nose-- dark fruits, jammy, spice, pepper. Dry, full body, dark fruit. Nice juice-- with or without fruit. Popped and poured this bottle. Wine is great option for the price. Enjoyed (and surprised). (2983 views)
Tasted by black fruits on 8/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Blakc fruits, plum, some oak and a little whiff of pepper. Smooth fruit and tannins combination. (2497 views)
Tasted by jacobnheeter on 7/14/2021 & rated 88 points: Fruity, with peppers and olives. Good acidity. Nice little wine. (2352 views)
Tasted by jacobnheeter on 6/21/2021 & rated 85 points: Meaty with rich fruits and black pepper. good acidity Med+ finish (1994 views)

Big, jammy Shiraz with limited oak and manageable tannins. Not a lot of complexity, but black-fruit. Drink now or the next 12 months.

Nice bottle that paired very well with BBQ’s Game hens (1264 views)

Tasted by AWineForG on 2/19/2021 & rated 90 points: Bang for your buck. I enjoyed it as is. I think it’s versatile enough to cook with and make sangrias as well. (1365 views)
Tasted by Alekos on 1/6/2021 & rated 87 points: Textbook Australian Shiraz, with all its good and not so great characteristics. An Alpha Male wine screaming for attention in a crowded room. OK QPR but probably would not buy again. (1398 views)
Tasted by Jithotw on 12/30/2020: Deep ruby
Med intensity, blackcurrant - some leaf, bell pepper? blackberry
Dry, med-acid. med tannin, hi alc, full body, med+ aftertaste
Smoother, no alc burn, carries more fruit, plum and cedar wood finish

Tasted by JCH2019 on 12/8/2020 & rated 88 points: Well made, sweet and fulfilling Shiraz. More plums and spice than black pepper but great perfume and satisfying mouth feel. To be enjoyed now and for the next few years in its soft prime.... (1322 views)
Tasted by jdkrabbe on 11/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Tasty, not as rich as a barossa, old world end of Aussie juice. (1191 views)
Tasted by johnnnyvino on 10/16/2020 & rated 89 points: Fun and enjoyable Shiraz. Juicy with some pepper and acidity for balance. Friendly crowd pleaser (1469 views)
Tasted by ColinR on 10/4/2020 & rated 90 points: Crimson-black; black cherries, plums, smoked meat, black pepper; ripe cherry/plummy, slightly peppery, medium-full body, good acidity, grainy tannins, good finish.
Ripe and fruity with elegantly wrapped gamey/peppery notes. Excellent value as usual from this producer. Went well with grilled meats. (1442 views)
Tasted by Jzizzle on 9/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Fruity and high acidity with notes of cedar/pepper, black olive and herb. A hint of sweetness against the substantial acidity keeps this pleasant enough... (1334 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 9/5/2020 & rated 88 points: Nice enough... Full fruit, sharp tannins. Maybe a bit overpriced? Would happily buy some more at ~$13... (1285 views)
Tasted by nulla on 9/5/2020 & rated 88 points: Paid just under $10 for this. Reasonable mid weeker with food. Could improve with 2-3 years cellar time but there are better options at the RRP. (1401 views)

One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale founded in 1912. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small-batch character of the wines and the true flavour of the McLaren Vale region. All grapes, red and white, are basket-pressed. The reds are still traditionally fermented with the grape skins (caps) submerged in open wax-lined concrete fermenters utilising the age-old technique of foot-treading.

Winemaking duties are carried out by fourth-generation Chester d’Arenberg Osborn. In June 2004 Chester’s father, d’Arry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contributions to the wine industry and to the McLaren Vale region. After more than 65 consecutive vintages d’Arry is very proud of his achievements in creating an internationally recognised wine brand commonly known as the ‘Red Stripe’ due to the distinctive diagonal red stripe that adorns the label. d’Arenberg’s art of being different extends to a range of fortified and dessert wines, which have legendary status worldwide.

d'Arenberg Shiraz The Footbolt

Before being renamed The Footbolt Shiraz in 1996, the Old Vine Shiraz (as it was then known) was the first wine to use the term ‘Old Vine’.
When this became common practice it was altered to honour a racehorse that changed the Osborn family forever.
The founder of d’Arenberg, Joseph Osborn was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable.
In 1912 he made the hard decision to sell his stable of horses to start d’Arenberg, so it is only fitting we pay homage to Joseph and his prize horse, Footbolt.
