Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bluecollar on 5/10/2024 & rated 91 points: Very lively on the front end and bursting with raspberries as the dominant flavor, with herbal notes. Round pleasing tannins that are well balanced for the long finish. Best with robust food...BBQ probably (55 views)
Tasted by Wremmer on 12/29/2023 & rated 88 points: Full bodied but fruit component somewhat subdued. Nearing end of life (258 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 12/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Blackberry, black olive, earth and leather. Rosemary? Still showing a generous measure of fruit. Initially, there's even still a tart element to the finish, but this gives way to more sanguine elements after the first hour. Not much diminished since my last tasting score 4 years ago. (207 views)
Tasted by kmicho on 10/31/2023 & rated 91 points: This is a very, very good Zin. I agree entirely with CDT’s comments - two reviews back:

“Dark ruby in colour with aromas of sweet black fruit, dusty earth & herbs(sage?). On the palate, full bodied juicy black fruit, boysenberry/blackberry, sweet tobacco, leather, dusty earth, cherry kirsch, medium acidity, medium soft tannins with a long finish to black pepper & chocolate. Very tasty & easy to drink Zinfandel.”

This Zinfandel is so well balanced that it has a great range of pairing and/or can be drunk by itself. Extremely pleased with this wine. (257 views)
Tasted by Reloan4u on 9/3/2023 & rated 91 points: Perfect time, smooth and delicious, with nice spice. Tannins and pepper mellowed out.
Had with marinated pork chops. (289 views)
Tasted by CDT on 4/22/2023 & rated 90 points: Tasted after a one hour decant & a single aeration.

Very tasty & easy to drink Zinfandel. (461 views)
Tasted by OldHick95 on 12/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Blackberry soda, spicy dried herbs. Mildly grippy tannins, but balanced with the light sweetness and acidity. A great value and a perennial crowd pleaser. (655 views)
Tasted by trastevere on 11/25/2022 & rated 89 points: Sweet ripe dark fruit and lots of spice combine well to provide an enjoyable Zin and the zingy red berry finish sets you up for the next mouthful. (593 views)
Tasted by fitchbuck on 7/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Niice for the priice. (853 views)
Tasted by dekevain on 2/19/2022 & rated 89 points: Black fruit and spice, good acidity and mouthfeel. Could easily age further . (1124 views)
Tasted by wgilbert3 on 12/6/2021 & rated 90 points: Excellent zin; not over oaked like so many are. Wish I had more! (233 views)
Tasted by cglex on 8/7/2021 & rated 90 points: Very nice Zif. I am new to them so hard for me to comment more. (1321 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/26/2021 & rated 90 points: 4th Saturday Group (R&S's): Double blind. Herb, raspberry, cherry and blackberry syrup aromas. Loads of ripe black fruit on the palate, along with a chocolate-covered graham cracker flavor as well. Guessed cab sauv. (R&S) (8209 views)
Tasted by DbertCellar on 5/28/2021 & rated 88 points: Aromas of spice, taste is dry with slight tangy overtones. Very full body, inky color. (1173 views)
Tasted by wgilbert3 on 4/13/2021 & rated 90 points: This was 2016, not 2017. Extremely nice and sophisitcated Zin; all flavors integrated so that the classic fruit and spice shine through. (326 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 3/20/2021 & rated 90 points: Great value. Spice and berry. Definitely would buy future vintages. Well made. (1252 views)
Tasted by IrvineCellar on 2/22/2021 & rated 88 points: Ruby red. Red fruit and oak nose. Creamy fuller mouth feel with medium+ tannins and lots of acidity. Clean finish. Oaky taste with red ans black fruit jam. Totally reasonable wine for BBQ meal. 88 pts (1026 views)
Tasted by JoeDwine on 2/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Really nice and elegant for a Zin.
Oak well integrated still showing fairly primary.
Cherry and Raspberry dominate. (419 views)
Tasted by Tobinski on 12/5/2020: I was hoping for some restraint from this one, in the style of Ridge's Three Valleys. Instead, I got a mouth full of oak and heavy-handed fruit. (1106 views)
Tasted by Laz4wine on 11/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Bright red fruits with subtle briary note on the nose, espresso/dark chcolate and peppery spices on the finish. Well made value for the varietal/blend. (1094 views)
Tasted by MMiazga on 11/1/2020 & rated 87 points: Blackberries and plums. Acidic and questionable underlying fruit. After a case of these, I would label it a so so daily drinker. (1081 views)
Tasted by Buff Tannen, USXFel Presidente on 10/16/2020 & rated 83 points: $15, enjoyed a cab of theirs a few years back, and hey, 23% petite sirah & carignan
Initially, cinnamon/chutney and tomatoes, giving way to raspberry red cherry vanilla, not always in that order. Imho, the petite tannins and carignan acidity save this from exemplifying why I and many others buy about 1 zin a year, which reminds me of Larry Wilmore's joke about porn. The people involved in porn and zin must really like making it, because nobody pays for it anymore, but that doesn't seem to have dissuaded them from making it
The next 2 days, this became slightly more refined and less flabby, but still seemed like zin caricature, especially in comparison to a just opened Bordeaux. But maybe those weren't Syrup Days (1139 views)
Tasted by Rickyd007 on 8/30/2020 & rated 90 points: Great zin, ready to drink. (1243 views)
Tasted by DbertCellar on 8/24/2020 & rated 89 points: Still young, cherry and plum aromas, moderate tannin, dry slight tartness. Try the next one in mid 2021 (1128 views)
Tasted by asplatt19 on 7/24/2020 & rated 91 points: Very nice. Bursting with fruit and a hint of spice. Easy to drink and may benefit from another year in the bottle. (489 views)

Dry Creek Vineyard

Producer website

Our 200 acres of estate owned vineyards are the foundation for our winery. Fundamentally, the family understands that great wines begin in the vineyard. This philosophy is an ideal marriage for winemaker Bill Knuttel, as he spends most of his time in the vineyard. Each harvest Bill can be found walking vineyards, row by row, to ensure that the grapes are ripening perfectly. Bill’s meticulous approach to vineyard management allows him to use the highest quality grapes for our wines. After all, a wine can only be as good as the fruit in the vineyard. If the fruit is bad there’s a pretty good chance the wine won’t be very good either. Utilizing careful viticultural practices and maintaining long term relationships with growers all contribute to producing our world-class wines.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
