Community Tasting Notes (average 94.4 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 85 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by englishman's claret on 3/21/2024 & rated 91 points: I’ve loved this in the past (twice) but tonight, for whatever reason, it seems a bit butch and simple. Plain, introverted, unwelcoming. (765 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 6/30/2023: This was yet another excellent vintage in today's vertical, but compared to 2000 it was more reserved and less opulent. There's a lot of structure here, and I suspect this is the better wine for the long haul, where 2000 has probably shown us most/all it has to show. I'd be eager to try 2001 again in 5+ years. (954 views)
Tasted by shifter on 4/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Atlanta Musigny & Chevy Dinner: PnP. So wonderful, just loads of class and beauty. Dark fruit, but lifted by the acidity and structure with a long finish. Clearly WOTF. (1404 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 11/7/2022: Another excellent showing for this excellent wine, which I thought screamed fine Chambolle tasted blind (though I thought it was older). (2966 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 8/22/2022 & rated 94 points: clean lean elegant. Open super easy to drink. some Greeness but doesn't bother me. a great bottle of mugnier musigny (1507 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 7/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Very impressive but just didn’t really do it for me (1856 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 7/15/2022: Purity and elegance, beautiful cherry and tenderness. (1400 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/2/2022 & rated 96 points: Azura. Lifted, cherried de-stemmed aromatics. Intense palate with sweetness. (1670 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 2/9/2022 & rated 96 points: Red Burgundy GC 01 (London): Single blind in a flight of 4 (others being Musigny 01s from Vogue and Laurent and MG CdV 01) this to me was the best wine of this flight and I guessed this correctly, edging out the Vogue (just) and the MG. I loved the engaging slightly old school rawness of the nose that still exuded enough elegance, the effortless palate shows a potpourri of red fruits, earth and herbs and is supremely elegant. It's already very pleasurable and will probably improve for another 5 years but it's in a fine spot today. My wine #4 of the night. (2062 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/20/2021 & rated 95 points: Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Amazingly elegant, this was tough to fully appreciate in the few minutes in glass. Bright red fruit with brilliant textures and great length, my few sips made me want more. (2392 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/20/2021 & rated 95 points: JK's 50th Birthday: Always my favorite vintage. Superb linear profile. Perfumed upon PnP. After as few hours just so mellow in the glass. More shut than last bottle. 95+ (2017 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/23/2021 & rated 96 points: Drinking Some Great Mugnier as an Hommage to Becky Wasserman (Republique - Los Angeles CA): In 99/01/02/05 vertical, preceded by the same vintages of Amoureuses. Bright red fruit throughout with a muscular feel, but simultaneously bright and dancing elegantly. So captivating and so much here, this is another wine that has continued to improve through the decades, and was barely ahead of the 2002 vintage as my Wine of the Night. (3052 views)
Tasted by joe d on 6/6/2021: Opened a couple of hours ahead. Ethereal nose of red fruits. Medium-to-dark color, but translucent. Medium body that just caressed the palate with good structure that wasn't obtrusive.
This seems like it's just on the front end of prime drinkability but will last. (1937 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/10/2021: From magnum this was quite tight to begin with. There was some menthol and meat and then all of the pretty red and blue things came to the fore. It had a velvety feel against the gums and possessed great volume and perfect balance. There was a hint of floral spice and mint and plenty of mineral to the back-end. (1879 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/11/2020 & rated 96 points: It takes a good three hours to blossom. Bouquet, stems, red fruit, potpourri and minerals. Crystallized purity and transperency in combination of weightless power. Elegance at its fineness for a Musigny. Always my reference point vintage for his Musigny. (2514 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 5/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a purple/red center with red rims (that was quite dark for a Burgundy). The medium+ intensity nose put forth cherries, tan spices, rhubarb, and minerals.

In the mouth, this wine was still young and tight with huge acidity, rounded tannin, and great length.

This wine was very impressive. I would not hesitate to open it at breakfast for an evening tasting. It could well pick up 2-3 points with 10+ years in the cellar. (2373 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 5/1/2020 & rated 98 points: Heavenly. Harmonious raspberries, red roses, and cream on the nose, slightly stemmy. Even better on the palate - more complex, more intense, more focused; raspberry and cream but also intense red spice notes, hugely expansive inner mouth perfume that just dances across the palate. This is really, really, really good. This evokes an emotional response, even tasted blind - you really don’t need the label to be carried away here. And I doubt it’s even at peak. 97-98 (4063 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 12/14/2019: nose- light and pure. perhaps cranberry
mouth - lovely. harmonious lighter red fruit spectrum with a vibrancy on the palate. the most compelling musigny i have had to date, though the others had less age and were mostly de Vogue. (2176 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 11/17/2019: - Vibrant medium ruby. Excellent blue flowers aromas, intermixed w sweet fruits, damp forest. 60mins later this has developed more herbaceous notes, which is not upleasant but took away the sweet seductive sensation and purity.

- Sweet entry, coated on the side of the palate with very sensual sweetness, acidity, delicate minerality with inner perfume and the best possible silky mouthfeel that a good Musigny should be, power without weight as they said. However there is also this intense bitterness / herbaceous notes (licorice, drier rosemary?) gripping on the mid palate as the wine flows which to me distracted the overall experience. Still, a privilege to drink a Mugnier Musigny at its drinking window. (1928 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/28/2019 & rated 96 points: Floral and pretty on the nose and palate. While there was alluring sweet red fruit on the palate, it had some undertone spicy and herbs. A great Musigny to drink now. 96-97 (2575 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 8/14/2019 & rated 97 points: Started out super funky, but with time showed great acidic fruit and a light touch of Chambolle wildness. Signature Mugnier profile, supreme elegance and just the right amount of age. 97 (2057 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 8/6/2019 & rated 96 points: In the window. Floral, sarsaparilla, lifted aromatics. Mineral palate. Plastic finish. (2066 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 6/4/2019 & rated 96 points: Jasper Musigny. Another great bottle of this. Cherry pie and nail polish aromatics. Antiseptically clean wine though touch of stink emerges. Simply so pure and crystalline. Represents what Fred wants to make, effortless. (1952 views)
Tasted by cct on 9/15/2018 & rated 97 points: 2001 Red Burgundy at Chez Hugo (Chez Hugo, Baltimore): More subtle and savory than the Vogue Bonnes Mares. On the nose, beautiful cherry fruit, loaminess, and wonderful florals. This has power and structure but it is hidden in its lacy exterior. Knock you over with a feather like power. Contrasts with plenty of overused but int his case appropriate metaphor. Sap and density. power without weight. This has the iron fist in a velvet glove feel. Filigree fine texture, elegant yet with hidden power. Very long on the back end. Terrific wine drinking in a great spot with no fear of decline soon. Man do I wish I could still buy this wine nowadays. (2802 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 9/15/2018 & rated 97 points: 2001 Red Burgundy Retrospective (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying subtle pure red and black fruit, blackberry, strawberry, sugar coated raspberry, anise, cinnamon, sautéed mushroom, a hint of sous bois, sap and earth. Exceptional balance and finesse, very finely layered rich yet subtle and pure red and black fruit, elegant, precise, detailed, weightless and sensual, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, very fine tannins and an incredible long subtle black fruit driven finish. This is a perfectly mature classic Musigny that is drinking incredibly. (2737 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
