Tasted by WineArchitect on 10/7/2023 & rated 88 points: Thanks PMARLO for your tasting note. Thank you Raul Perez for producing a remarkably mediocre wine. Bravo to your marketing genius whomever they are for hyping this wine! A great way to sell wine and boost profits on a just so-so product.

Popped and poured from the cellar at 58. A short glass revealed the typical dark violet aromatics. The flavors are dark cherry and acetone. Do other members of CT like this? I think not! I’ll be using the rest of my case for cooking with and I hope it doesn’t ruin my gravy. EG. WineArchitect. ArchitecturalArtistry

Tasted by benjamin96 on 7/26/2023 & rated 88 points: Un vin bien en place, fruits noires, assez frais, finale courte. Un vin sans accroc mais rien deparant non plus. Bien pour le prix. (2036 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 7/21/2023 & rated 91 points: Late night "casual" at Maison Dakota. Drank in Grassl Cru. Pop and poured. Re-tasted on day 3.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of violets, stony minerality, dark red cherries, black cherries, meatiness. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins that become very smooth by day 3, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of violets, nail polish, meatiness, black cherries, dark red cherries. Long finish. Mouth-feel is pleasing and good.
Very good quality. Very nice Mencia. Unbeatable QPR. (1852 views)
Tasted by MoreWinePlease on 5/23/2023 & rated 87 points: More of a food wine than a sipper. Dry but flavorful enough, nothing special. (2054 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 5/17/2023 & rated 89 points: Many CT users reported as average or less than average. I've had it opened for three days and it started out so-so but has improved. Was slightly sharp from the acidity and/or mencia grape, but has smoothed out and become more balanced. Was a good everyday wine. Might age no more than 5 years and see if becomes better when first opened. A bit on the fence for purchasing again. Didn't do anything bad, just didn't stand out either.
Update: I had this opened in bottle over a week and it was decent up to the end, actually best at one week. Think myself and others may have done it a disservice by rating at low to middle average. Think I will buy again. (1703 views)
Tasted by jpsam on 4/26/2023: Nothing remarkable and nothing noteworthy. A Tuesday night wine. I don’t drink wine on Tuesday. You can do better! (1988 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 3/24/2023 & rated 91 points: Has put on weight since I first tried this 2 years ago. Still vivacious and aromatically precise, with denser, more sun-kissed fruit, and less nervy, sinewy structure than before. Still great powdery, iron-flecked tannins. Character is now more cool climate CA Syrah than N Rhone - actually there’s a lot here that reminds me of the Bedrock North coast Syrah. (2129 views)
Tasted by foyfrcs on 3/23/2023 & rated 85 points: Certainly not as impressed with this wine as in 2021 (disappointed might be more accurate!)
Unless this is a dodgy bottle, needs drinking up quickly.
Three left, will retry another in the next few months. (2029 views)
Tasted by topherwhatever on 2/25/2023 & rated 84 points: a bit of va, but a great easy drinker

great value (1994 views)
Tasted by 87tellub on 2/8/2023 & rated 92 points: I'd probably have guessed CdP if blinded. This is one of those rare wines you immeidately want to come back to, to keep smelling and tasting. Excellent.

Little bit dark and funky on the nose. Meaty. I like it. Palate is lighter on its feet - maybe medium in body - than the nose implied, nicely fresh. Very slight sweetness to the fruit, nice balance between too tart and too ripe; sticky and pleasing. Little spicy peppery finishing kick. (2246 views)
Tasted by JoeMe on 2/5/2023 & rated 91 points: I have had a few of these and this bottle has been the best so far and I will say this wine has really grown on me since first tasted a couple of years ago. The nose is really nice, dark fruit and herbs. A very pleasing palate as well, sour cherry, blackberry and spices. Overall really fresh, mouthwatering acidity that made this pair very well with Italian sausage and bell peppers. Tempted to score this 92. 91-92 (2060 views)
Tasted by guillermo- on 1/15/2023 & rated 91 points: This had gained some complexity in the year and some months since I last had it and, given that, it may not have even hit its stride yet. If I had more, I’d wait another year, maybe two before my next bottle. (2381 views)
Tasted by vlzat on 1/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Medium to full body, dark to inky purple colour. Intense dried fruits, herbs and leathery aroma. On palate blueberry and blackberry following by mineral, earthy notes and silky tannins, juicy finish of good length and lovely acidity. Rich and complex but not overpowered and balance. Food friendly, well pairing to pilaf. Serve 18ºC - 20ºC. Requires patience, open two hours ahead. Drink now and next three/five years. (2314 views)
Tasted by dfbkk on 12/25/2022: Buy more for easy drinking (2071 views)
Tasted by dfbkk on 12/16/2022: At Clara nice as usual nothing special though (1934 views)
Tasted by Joshvoulters on 11/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Wow! Very alive: there’s an immediate rush of fresh, clean and pure red and blue fruit - a slight tang on the nose. Just as it subsides, a wave of bass notes: subtly spiced and warming oak, plummy dark fruit. A little bit of game, some graphite. No two ways about it - this is complex and compelling- there’s a lot to enjoy.

Medium body, a touch of fruit sweetness on the palate and nicely judged acidity- a thrum rather a bite. There’s some pepper spice on the back end. Tannins are smooth and fine. The finish lingers dry and savoury.

Clearly I love this: stupid value at £14.50, and feels like it’s going to get even more interesting with time and some tertiary development. Why did nobody tell me about Mencia before??

Mostly old vines across a range of plots on different soils. Some whole bunch, fermented and matured in old oak. (2678 views)
Tasted by Saxman1984 on 10/28/2022: I really can’t add to the previous comments. An excellent bargain with a multitude of aromas and flavors evident with each sip. I especially enjoyed the bitter, mineral tinge to the finish. I really need to drink the rest of Perez’s range. (2249 views)
Tasted by Fractalage on 10/18/2022: These bottles have started to close up. This one had a very reserved nose and palate for days.
Literally 8 days later, I had 6oz left in the bottle undecanted and was still very good. This Mencia will last decades.
Oubliez ce-lui-ci pour dix ans ou plus.

Let them shut down.
Revisit in 5-10. (2457 views)
Tasted by Beerzebub on 9/25/2022: P&p; drinking well right away. Smells like red fruit along the lines of pomegranate and hibiscus, with dried flower petals, spice, wood (reasonably subtle), and wet stone. Crunchy and fresh, with excellent acidity, and a bit of additional structure from moderately grippy tannins. Appetizing touch of bitterness toward the finish, contributing to a sense of stony/ferrous minerality. Tasty and fresh, with some substance and depth, enjoyable wine. (2480 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 7/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Lots of funky goodness here, with barnyard and leather notes leading the way. Black raspberry, dark chocolate, and black pepper weave in, with ample acidity keeping it lively. Hint of sanguine too. Tasty and a nice change of pace. (2886 views)
Tasted by Fractalage on 6/21/2022: Excellent wine.
Very Syrah like.
Love that dry mineral, granitic like taste and smell.
Lots of mulberry and descent finish.
Meats, and meats, very good to pair with lamb which causes a good smoke to come out.
This is better than the 2019, which is still needing time, but much more rich.
Good luck finding this year on the West Coast.

Now that this has had a few open hours, it's just fabulous!
Delicious meats, cured meats, bbq meats: It's bloody. Beef blood. Bikraver.
Raoul Perez is legend.
I buy everything he releases.
Still got some of his 2001 Mencia and so perfect.

God! I love this bloody wine! (2761 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 6/12/2022 & rated 90 points: This is great. Light red fruits, touch of dried herbs/spices, and an interesting red earth element. That latter piece comes through as a drying, clay/brick taste & texture. Midweight, great crystalline red fruit layered with that herbal tinge. Nice acid & structure on the finish makes it work well with food. (2456 views)

Mencía

Mencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.

The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.

Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Castilla y León

Castilla y León Wine (Turismo Castilla y León )

Bierzo

[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.

The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].

Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
