Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BadOyster on 4/27/2024 & rated 85 points: AG and I must have been drinking different wines. This felt muted except for the singular cough medicine note. Could have been a beauty if that darker bitter flavors weren’t so dominant. (242 views)
Tasted by Tobinski on 4/27/2024: This exudes classicism. Some VA at first on the nose that blew off fairly fast. Really picked up aromatic steam after 15 to 20 minutes. Mysterious aromas and flavors in the tree bark/walnut department. Little to no fruit, but not in a dried out sense. Rather, we realized after a few minutes of sharing descriptors that not a single one was fruit. The tannins were in a nicely resolved place--slightly grippy but in no way astringent. This closes with a blast of tangy acidity that makes one reflexively reach for food. (200 views)
Tasted by CPharm on 10/14/2023 & rated 94 points: Appearance: Medium garnet with brick changes at the rim. No obvious extract in the tears.

Nose: Pronounced aromas of dried cherries, dried herbs, licorice, leather, earth, smoke, and dried flowers.

Palate: Medium+ body, medium alcohol, high acidity, high, fine-grained tannins that are felt on the gums, cheeks, and center of the tongue. Pronounced flavors of dried red fruits, leather, and tobacco. Finishes dry and very long.

Impression: Gorgeous Valtellina showing clear signs of development but still retaining freshness. Drinking beautifully right now. (871 views)
Tasted by thesternowl on 7/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Popped and poured; consumed over three days and probably best on Day 1 though Day 3 didn’t exactly suck either; I think it depends on what what you’re looking for. The 2009 AR.PE.PE. Grumello “Sant’Antonio” pours a bright garnet color with a translucent core. On the nose, effusive notes of ripe red and dark fruits, roses and tar. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Elegant. Savory. Gorgeous. Confirming the notes on the nose. This girl be classy and oooh, she got some real hips! This Nebbiolo is all about finesse and I am here for it! Drink now and through 2029. (1136 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 9/4/2022 & rated 87 points: Finally back to my notes from an event two weeks ago.. oops!

This was my bottle, selected as its a 2009 to be at the opposite end of the 2000-2009 range v TCs Rauzan 2000! Also chose this as I wanted to bring an Italian for legendary Italian wine sifu @Kaki Vino

Overall this was slightly dissapointing especially at close to the USD100 price level. Muted nose even after 2 hours breathe, and cherry and earth on the palate. Medium finish.

5th of 11.. SKTs afternoon soirée at his home, cheers! (2104 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 4/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Light ruby; aromatic, black cherry, cola, roses, floral; palate is light-medium bodied, high acidity, balanced 13.5% alcohol, tannins surprisingly approachable, some dark fruited primary flavors, some cola, but not much depth through the midpalate though the balance is excellent; finish is medium length and well balanced. Integrated, ready to drink and enjoyable, and very nice aromatics, but I'm not sure that this bottling is a huge step up in complexity over the very good lower tier bottlings from ArPePe. 91
3 hours decanted: Honestly, not evolving much at all, certainly not in a dramatically positive direction. Enjoyable and balanced, but I look for more in this price range. (2364 views)
Tasted by nynrgtrader@gmail.com on 1/26/2022: Deep Ruby with brickish edges developing

Powerful nose showing incense, lavender, Red cherry, Black cherry, cola (lol..maybe that's Dr. Pepper!), cooking spices

Palate shows all of these wrapped in smooth, silky tannins and adds some black pepper and vanilla

Drinking absolutely perfectly right now...a really enjoyable wine (2610 views)
Tasted by pryby on 10/21/2021 & rated 95 points: Outrageously beautiful nose of roses and cherries. The wine took a while to open up on the palate - but over 2.5 hours developed a lovely complex earthiness with the fruit just peeking out. If only I could have kept half the bottle for the next day I’m sure this would be really remarkable. (2368 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 7/1/2021 & rated 94 points: Side by side with the same vintage Inferno Sesto Canto and this was the more fruit backward, more interesting wine. (But really, both are lovely).

Cherries, raspberries, fresh mountain herbs, cumin, dried porcini mushroom, anise and a lot of other spice notes. Oak influence is balanced and shows itself as this tobacco/smoke thing that I really liked. Medium + body, only medium tannins. Mineral driven; but with a lot of heft to it. Absolutely loved this with a Tuna steak (2070 views)
Tasted by NickA on 9/19/2020 & rated 95 points: 41st birthday with the parents (67 Pall Mall): This was really singing tonight, as soon as popped and poured - perfectly resolved, gorgeous exotic aromatics, plenty of weight and plenty of acidity. Didn't have time to ponder further as the bottle disappeared very rapidly. (2027 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/2/2020: Very good. This is a late release, iirc, and I'm glad they waited as it's in a great spot just now. Med+ body, depth, with a lovely balance of soil and red/dark red fruits. As always with this producer, plenty of fresh, balancing acidity. This struck me as such an individual expression of place and grape when first tasted a few years ago I just had to have it in my cellar. Now I'm glad I acted on that impulse. Brilliant, now and thru 2028. highly recommended

Tasted by soyhead on 6/22/2019: preferred the 05 and 07 Sassella Rocce to this. needs more age? (2102 views)
Tasted by Nick4378 on 1/12/2019 & rated 93 points: Lots of roses on the nose followed by a seamless wine on the palate. Everything is in place. Very Burgundian in nature & has a long life ahead (1520 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 9/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Ruby red. Five years in barrels. Not very evident aromas, but some Nebbiolo aromas of tea, bark and forest floor. Young, fresh and tight on the palate. Will last. (1279 views)
Tasted by laralh on 9/16/2017 & rated 88 points: Kirsebær, pepper, litt lær og rose. Lang og medium fylde. (1147 views)

AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio

Ar.Pe.Pe. Grumello Riserva Sant'Antonio was made to commemorate the founder’s wedding anniversary. A virtuoso wine that starts life next to the church he got married in, in Sant'Antonio a Montagna in Valtellina.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Valtellina

Valtellina is an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, bordering Switzerland, from the village of Berbenno to Tirano. It's been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna). These come in two forms: the standard Rosso di Valtellina and its powerful, dried-grape Sfursat (Sforzato) form. With a few years of bottle age, gamey, leather-like notes will develop, and the crimson will turn to garnet with a brick-orange rim – the visual trademark of Nebbiolo-based wines. Situated in the Rhaetian Alps, about 60 miles NE of Milan, some of the steepest slopes in Europe with the most striking landscapes of the Alps. Requires mostly hand-harvesting. The soils here are typically alluvial: gravelly, well drained and rich in silica. They are littered with larger stones, which gather heat throughout the day and release it in the evening. Many producers here also make wines using the Alpi Retiche IGT designation.

The thin skin of the Nebbiolo grape, unlike the varieties used to make Amarone, and the practice of minimizing the amount of tannin extracted during vinification, unlike the traditional style of vinifying Barolo, creates a Nebbiolo wine unlike any other. The bright, cherry flavors and rose and violet aromas that are unmistakably Nebbiolo are still there, but the tannic backbone is much lighter, less obtrusive. This is alpine Nebbiolo. It has more in common with the Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) grown in the Val D’Aosta or the Nebbiolo from Gattinara or Ghemme in the alpine hills of Alto Piemonte, than it does with Barolo or Barbaresco.
