Tasted by guillermo- on 11/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Drinkable now but also likely to improve and gain nuance for another decade. Sour cherries and tar with aromas of dried flowers. Medium to light body. Very elegant and old-school. Outstanding balance at 13% ABV. If only more Nebbiolo wines could say the same.

(Note to self: Next bottle in late 2028.) (928 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 11/4/2023 & rated 92 points: Tasting yet another top Riserva from my favourite producer from Valtellina. Made from single varietal of Nebbiolo, locally referred to as Chiavennasca, aged for 5 years in big barrels, stainless steel and bottle. Medium ruby colour, garnet hue. Intense aroma of cherries, dried rose petals, tobacco, cranberries, toasted oak. Medium body, smoky and vibrant, slightly less elegant than Inferno, though still smooth and delightful with lively structure, high acidity and medium+ very refined tannins. (1021 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Sangiovese or Nebbiolo theme dinner at Solo. Tasted blind. Drank in Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux.
Appearance is clear, very pale intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of violets, purple plums, red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, lovely saliva-inducing high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), crunchy fine easy though high tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of violets, purple plums, elegant sour red cherries, distinct unique stony minerality and tar earth. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Unique style Valtellina terroir at work, with some complexity, though it may come across as just an elegant playful easy drink. (1192 views)
Tasted by Es7e2003 on 8/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Pale garnet is glass. Red sour cherry, potpourri, and tar. Light and elegant. Dances on the tongue. Hold. (1036 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 4/23/2023 & rated 93 points: ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): And this is where we begin to stretch our legs and dig in. Oh the nose is just so heady and complex with perfumed tones of strawberries, red cherries, crushed berries, crushed rocks, rose petals, wild flowers, licorice, fresh herbs, and a touch of leather. The fruit is firmly in the red spectrum, but this really has taken on some layering as the tones have begun to work in closer harmony. The Medium/full bodied feel is fairly light on its feet and balanced with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is a feel that is about refinement. The layering of the nose comes through beautifully here as well while the finish doesn't want to quit. This does feel like it may even have another gear to kick into with a few more years. It's just getting going and it's already a beauty. (593 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 12/29/2022: Young, drinkable and promising more with age. Trademark AR.PE.PE. sour cherry with tar and easy tannin. Loved how light the body was and how the almost playful acid balances the wine. (1322 views)

Producers notes
We are a family of winegrowers and, for over 150 years, we have been passionately devoted to the cultivation of Nebbiolo. This is a rare grape variety that, over the centuries, has adapted to the Valtellina, a land like no other, where everything is still done by hand. For 5 generations we have always waited for “the time it takes” “the right waiting time” and it is this that sets the pace of our work. Time and humility are what make our wine the purest, sincerest expression of this land and of the people who cultivate it with such dedication. This was the lesson we were taught by our father Arturo, without letting ourselves be influenced by passing fashions and conventional tastes.

We are convinced that the outstanding qualities of Nebbiolo from the Alps means it is more than worthy of its place of honour on the international market of fine wines. Without this worldwide acknowledgement, this age-old activity would simply not be economically sustainable for it rejects any idea of modern mass-production.

AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio

Ar.Pe.Pe. Grumello Riserva Sant'Antonio was made to commemorate the founder’s wedding anniversary. A virtuoso wine that starts life next to the church he got married in, in Sant'Antonio a Montagna in Valtellina.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Valtellina

Valtellina is an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, bordering Switzerland, from the village of Berbenno to Tirano. It's been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna). These come in two forms: the standard Rosso di Valtellina and its powerful, dried-grape Sfursat (Sforzato) form. With a few years of bottle age, gamey, leather-like notes will develop, and the crimson will turn to garnet with a brick-orange rim – the visual trademark of Nebbiolo-based wines. Situated in the Rhaetian Alps, about 60 miles NE of Milan, some of the steepest slopes in Europe with the most striking landscapes of the Alps. Requires mostly hand-harvesting. The soils here are typically alluvial: gravelly, well drained and rich in silica. They are littered with larger stones, which gather heat throughout the day and release it in the evening. Many producers here also make wines using the Alpi Retiche IGT designation.

The thin skin of the Nebbiolo grape, unlike the varieties used to make Amarone, and the practice of minimizing the amount of tannin extracted during vinification, unlike the traditional style of vinifying Barolo, creates a Nebbiolo wine unlike any other. The bright, cherry flavors and rose and violet aromas that are unmistakably Nebbiolo are still there, but the tannic backbone is much lighter, less obtrusive. This is alpine Nebbiolo. It has more in common with the Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) grown in the Val D’Aosta or the Nebbiolo from Gattinara or Ghemme in the alpine hills of Alto Piemonte, than it does with Barolo or Barbaresco.
