Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/23/2021 & rated 92 points: Pristine bottle, eighth from a case purchased in 2013. Not decanted, opened three hours in advance. The previous bottle, tasted two years ago, was unexciting, but this one is showing well. Pale golden colour; beautifully developed nose, nuance and precision, depth and lift, jasmine and lemon, honeyed richness and youthful freshness, savoury oak; the medium-bodied palate (13% ABV) displays remarkable youthful freshness and ditto aromas - particularly from the Sauvignon Blanc, lemon curd, the oak is perfectly integrated and the minerally energy bodes well for the future; good resonance and length. (2128 views)
Tasted by bjlcrucrazy on 8/11/2020 & rated 90 points: excellent. Peaked. Superb with fried pickerel as always (1371 views)
Tasted by magnum1 on 4/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Diesel, viscous and oily. Like a mature white burgundy crossed with a German Riesling Kab on the nose. Getting on but enjoyable nonetheless. (1298 views)
Tasted by Laurent73 on 1/3/2020 flawed bottle: Oxydized. (1566 views)
Tasted by wine&roses on 8/22/2019 & rated 86 points: Oxidized. Left it too long. Clearly this was once a lovely, rich, complex wine. . . . (1672 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Very good white Bordeaux, but lacks the wow-factor. All present and correct, but fails to excite. Was probably best in youth, even though it has the structure to last. (1483 views)
Tasted by Laurie2 on 12/15/2018 & rated 94 points: Very nice indeed
Tropical, lemon, long and full (1184 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Deepend color, but not oxidized. Sweet caramel quickly followed by a broad citrus palate. Still in a very nice place. (1385 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 1/21/2018: Opens with some oxidation, but still able to pull some honey, lemon.
Overall, this wine seemed flawed as the previous 3 bottles did, coming from a wine bid auction. If not flawed, not a fan of these bottles. (1562 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 9/30/2017 & rated 92 points: Sixth bottle from a case, decanted for one hour. Really shining today. Harmonious, complex, balanced and energetic, jasmin and honey, vegetal notes and savoury oak, citrus fruit, lovely depth, perfect weight, hint of pastry cream, long and sappy finish. Went well with Dover Sole with brown shrimps. (1991 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 6/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Best bottle yet -- hitting its stride in a big way. (1519 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/12/2017 & rated 90 points: This is another good bottle. Vegetal notes and honey, mature but energetic, fresh and intense, vibrant bitters from the oak, very good resonance and length. Not the most complex or refined of wines, but we polished this off very quickly with a home-made Gordon Ramsay fish pie. Drink now - 2020, but I wonder whether this will ever be as good as it was on Valentine's day 2011. (2033 views)
Tasted by markcic on 12/24/2016 & rated 91 points: At Harry's Xmas Eve dinner, served with the Swordfish, the wine is light yellow in color, white fruit on the nose, the palate is melon, lemon peel, a hint of tangerine and the finish was moderate to long. A most enjoyable wine. (1584 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 12/17/2016: Regular dinner group (@ MH): In the bouquet yellow fruits and oaky flavors. Same on the palate, good acidity and a slight touch of sweetness. Slightly reductive. No score. (2005 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 11/16/2016 & rated 88 points: Ranjan's 113th Birthday Dinner (Members' Lounge, Happy Valley Racecourse, Hong Kong): (From a 6.0L decanted an hour or two in advance of serving). Light silvery green-gold colour. Nose is almost gunflint and some lanolin. Palate is structured and quite tannic - peach stone predominates followed by a bit of white/yellow peach fruit and fresh banana. No lenngth. I wanted to like this more but I think that the large format bottle may have slowed its development. (1718 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/21/2016 & rated 89 points: Rich but lively colour, slightly deepened; initially the nose displays a whiff of wet straw, but decanting clears this up, feels very developed, smoky wax, resinous oak, very good depth but lacks fruit; the palate has good weight and intensity, lively acidity, a silky texture and a lovely balance, with a hint of ripe citrus fruit and firm bitters from the wood, but the flavours are relatively light; light finish, green tea, good length. I hope my remaining seven bottles will prove better than this. (1973 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 4/19/2016 & rated 91 points: This wine is drinking beautifully. No formal notes, but it was an elegant wine - smooth, balanced and had a lovely finish. (1517 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Fullish straw colour, mature but lively appeareance; harmonious, deep and expressive nose, with vegetable notes, perfectly integrated oak, citrus and tropical fruit and a wonderful mineral freshness; the palate is elegant but intensely flavoured, with a distinctly salty minerality and a savoury note, only medium weight but with a lovely drive; very good length. Drink now and over the next few years. (2253 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 6/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Straw. Nose of fresh mown grass, cilantro and sage with a citrus undertone. Approach is wet limestone and a hint of sweet fruit followed by the herbal notes and finishes with limes and lemons. Definitely evolved throughout the bottle and in teh glass. (1934 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 5/30/2015 & rated 92 points: Light straw. Sweet plums, lemons, green apples on the nose. Rich and nuanced with apples, lemon grass, wet stones, a hint of petrol and some orange rind. This is developing beautifully. (1903 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 8/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Pronounced straw colour; enticing, complex, providing intrigue, neat; cut & drive, acidity to fore, haunting stone fruits; dashing, extended finish. So good now but plenty of time in hand.
Real quality & consistent to previous highly enjoyable bottle, a couple of years ago. (2235 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Pale straw. Crisp nose of yeast, green grapes, star fruit. Top notes of wheat grass, lime, lemons, limestone and a mild astringent acid to finish. Still many years left, but drinking well. (2334 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 5/9/2014: Basically same note as before. Requires 30 min in the glass. Just what you expect from a good white Bordeaux. Excellent with food. (2164 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/8/2014 & rated 92 points: A private dinner at a friend's (Amsterdam): Paired with Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2004. Lovely colour, fullish yellow; excellent depth and complexity on the nose, vegetal notes, hint of tropical fruit, lemon, perfectly integrated oak; palate seems mature, good intensity and weight, oakier than the Chevalier but beautifully integrated, good flavour intensity and length, but without the ageing potential of the Chevalier. (2801 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/18/2013 & rated 91 points: Light straw yellow. Citrus nose, with hints of licorice and fresh mown grass. Top notes are the forward acids, citrus, kiwi, lime, lemon grass, tart green apple. A slight hint of sweetness in the finish. Still can benefit form time in the bottle. (2705 views)

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
