| Community Tasting Notes (average 84.5 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by bacchus on 10/11/2012 & rated 87 points: opened this bottle to celebrate my 68th birthday. shared with ellen, mahesh and pat at selkirk manor. served with dessert (assorted cupcakes from Brooklyn Cupcakes in Williamsburg). this was the second of two bottles brought home from dinner at Union Square Cafe with Danny Meyer. I am afraid i let too much time go by to revisit this wine. we have so few occasions where we serve formal dessert course in a celebratory manner. there was a quick burst of fruit upon opening which initially made me think the wine was still sound. it was only enjoyable for a brief period with flavors and viscosity reminiscent of preserved peaches. this faded quickly, leaving an unpleasant metallic taste. will use unconsumed wine for cooking. (2309 views) | | Tasted by bacchus on 5/30/2009 & rated 90 points: served this with dessert (pepperidge farm chocolate cake) at a selkirk manor housewarming dinner. pat, keith and jean were in attendance. this bottle was a gift from danny meyer, for having attended annual wine dinner at union square cafe in june of 2006. seems hard to believe that 3 years have gone by. tonite, the wine showed very well. tastes almost the same as i remember it. other tasters have found so many different flavors. for me, the peach is outstanding. the wine is still very fresh although it has lost whatever acidity was there in its youth. i have to agree with the hugel website that this wine will remain sound and enjoyable for another year. will save remaining bottle for next summer. (3541 views) | | Tasted by yeastbeast on 7/23/2007 & rated 83 points: Drier and more bitter than I remember it being last year. (3776 views) | | Tasted by Jazzman on 6/21/2007 & rated 87 points: Nice wine! Nose of apple, pear, perhaps some pineapple and a little floral aspect. The palate was fruit, with honey. Difficult to pinpoint the exact fruit. Nice balance. Not too sweet, off dry wine. Nice mouth feel and finish. Paired this with Chinese food. The spicier the dish, the sweeter this wine seemed. Nice pairing that I'd do again. (3546 views) | | Tasted by KMoon on 4/7/2007 & rated 70 points: This wine has lost its acidity. Only drank a small amount and then decided to pass on the bottle. (2043 views) | | Tasted by yeastbeast on 3/6/2007 & rated 85 points: Had it at dinner with Phil and Alla, who dug it very much. Still drinking nicely, though I'm concerned that it's losing some of its acidity. I'll pick up a bottle of the '05 for a little vertical. (2163 views) | | Tasted by GraemeBell on 3/2/2007 & rated 89 points: Nice balance. Agree with previous noes. Faint sweetness, decent acidity. Lime, grapefruit and apricot and typical floral nose (although somewhat muted). Would buy again - represents fair value. (1869 views) | | Tasted by yeastbeast on 12/9/2006 & rated 85 points: Of the six bottles uncorked at Saturday's dinner party, this was the favorite according to our blind ballot. I tasted it, but because I was running around doing the host thing, didn't get to think about it— seemed perfectly decent, not overly sweet, good acidity. Couldn't tell you more, but I'll probably pick up a few more bottles. (2472 views) | | Tasted by paulst on 11/11/2006 & rated 90 points: Plenty of round balanced apricot, peach and honey. Nice balance. (1862 views) | | Tasted by pgm on 7/2/2006 & rated 89 points: Very nice. Citrus, primarily lime and grapefruit, with floral hints on the nose. Rounder and full in the mouth, featuring peach, grapefruit and lychee. Very enjoyable. (2237 views) |

Citation from a comment by John H. Trombley on Hugel wines labeled "Grossi Laüi":
These wines come from lieu-dit(s) located within [a] Grand Cru vineyard(s), but were not labeled with their respective vineyard names (a requirement for Alsace Grand Cru AOC.) As a matter of fact, this seems to have been deliberately avoided, purportedly for reasons given below.
IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT NOT EVERY WINE MADE IN A GRAND CRU VINEYARD IS ENTITLED TO THE AOC ALSACE GRAND CRU BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER REQUIREMENTS, NOT LEAST YIELD AND permitted VARIETIES.
NOTE THAT what is claimed by Robert Parker as an Alsatian-dialect trivalent for the Burgundian 'Grand Cru' or the German 'Grosses Gwächs', that is, Grossi Laüi, seems to have no official standing in the wine law that I could find as of this date. The Hugels are knows to be among a handful of powerful estates who, for various reasons, have strongly resisted participation in the Alsace Grand Cru system, and its efforts at promoting a separate system probably should be seen as self-promotional, in the view of some. In 2017, those resisters were beginning to work with the system, and it is expected that this will influence the labeling identity of subsequent vintages. I expect this may cause some confusion as to wine identities.
In Cellar Tracker, it is strongly suggested that wines not be listed as Grand Cru unless the maker has chosen to make that label claim, and is prepared to defend it to the Appellation authorities. However, exceptions may arise, and will undoubtedly be structured into the CT infomatics.Gewürztraminer Varietal Character (Appellation America)France Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)
