Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 104 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 3/2/2023 & rated 93 points: Nose on bread crust, autolysis and an oxidative touch.

Effervescence still active.

In the mouth, we feel the champagne at its peak. the whole is harmonious, with pear and brioche that intertwine in a high quality juice. It is intense and totally untied on a beautiful freshness. Chalky finish that I would have liked longer to take it to the next level. (978 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 1/19/2023: Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Rob (Water Grill in Costa Mesa): Been about 3 years since I had this wine. That last note is still pretty valid for the bottle we had blind last night. There is some oxidative quality here, with some pear and brioche. It's holding ip pretty well for 20 years old but my sense is that this is peaking. Some pounded rock/chalk in the texture that gives this some structure but mostly this feels resolved to me.  Tasted by loloFR on 5/14/2022 & rated 94 points: A masterpiece of power and refinement. At peak now (1310 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 4/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Mature and interesting. Cork slightly dubious. 12.5% (1277 views)
Tasted by Sheila62 on 2/22/2022: Focused and balanced, and very good. I actually believe it is more 2008 than 2002. Great length, and no need to drink if you have more. I really enjoyed this! (1445 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 1/22/2022 & rated 93 points: Quite rich nose with brioche, lemon, and mineral flavors. The palate has good acidity and more toasty notes, citrus, and minerals. There's good complexity and a nice finish. Lovely wine! (1145 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 2/14/2021 & rated 92 points: Despite the years, this wine was still youthful and energetic, showing bright citrus fruits (both lemon and lime) with accents of white flowers, crushed shells, and ginger. Had I tasted it blind, I might have guessed it was a 2008, but I’m happy that I have 2 more left. Think I’ll wait at least another 5 years before popping the next one. (1644 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 12/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Very nice treat to end this strange 2020.
Bouquet with some Grapefruit notes together with almonds and some brioche. Right now quite rich and round, not anorexic at all, but focused and balanced with good mineral aspects at the same time. Probably missing the final complexity, but drinking very nicely right now. Should be enjoyed over the next decade, but no need to hurry. (1319 views)
Tasted by Jahull03 on 7/6/2020: Outstanding. Fresh, vibrant, but wise at 18 years. Between all extremes and just plain good. (1717 views)
Tasted by canan on 2/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Martin BYO: Very open and fresh with a good depth. Still very young but very nice to drink right now. (1275 views)
Tasted by Bandi on 1/12/2020: Golden, autolytic beauty. Rich and creamy. Needs drinking up. (2169 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 12/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Has some brioche notes and just a tinge of pleasing oxidative notes on the finish. A rich mousse with a medium bodied feel overall. To compare to my BdB'a from the other night this was between the Dom Ruinart and the Taittinger on the palate in being slightly less rich than the DR and less acid racy than the Taittinger. A solid vintage version IMO. (1536 views)
Tasted by christyler on 12/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Solid bottle - enjoyed this quite a bit. Very fresh and young. Maybe a tad below expectations given the price and age. (1597 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/8/2019 & rated 90 points: Sunday afternoon wines (Chicago, IL): Not a very convincing showing today. This is a fine bottle of champagne, but it's also a little light and simple especially given the high expectations coming from the vintage. A little thin with some pleasant fruit and acidity. At least based on this bottle, this wine won't blow your mind, but it's a pleasant enough drink. (2637 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 9/22/2019: Den var nesten stum den første halvtimen.
Kom seg noe utover, men ble aldri en høydare.
Ingen særlig modning å snakke om, så den tåler mer tid. (1784 views)
Tasted by ryestraw on 7/15/2019: This is sublime. Notes here are spot on. I wish I had more. (1507 views)
Tasted by derek.hara@sbcglobal.net on 7/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Marzipan, brioche and age appropriate oxidative notes adding complexity to still vibrant backbone of acidity and minerality. Great mature BdB. (1465 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 6/8/2019: Medium gold color leads me to believe there is a little age here. Nose shows light oxidation, another hint? Sweet yellow apple flavor and a very soft mouthfeel, good stuff. (1512 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/6/2019: Weeknight Wines Blind: Served blind next to 4 other champagnes (also blind). 4th time I have had this wine since release, and it was my least favorite of the flight. Disgorged September 2011. Kind of oxidative and nutty, with a caramel candy chew note that I picked up on. Never had that sensory note go off in my head in tasting wines but last night the wine just flashed that picture in my head. Cool experience. Also some grapefruit here, but all together this didn't in total engage me like the others in the flight. (2062 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 5/30/2019 & rated 93 points: (Disgorged in September 2011, 100% Chardonnay from older vines between 50-100 years old from Cramant (54%), Chouilly(31%), Cuis(15%))
Lovely golden yellow colour with a maturing nose showing honey, butter and yellow plums at first. With some time in the glass it reveals a pleasant note of coffee and roasted notes. Acidity on the palate with red apples and a rounder mid before the nice and lengthy finish showing plums peel bitterness where the roasted notes comes back again. Excellent glass development showing a smooth acidity and with a nice evolution for further bottles to drink over the coming decades...

Tasted by Pverd on 11/16/2018 & rated 92 points: Complex, lovely length. Nutty but not heavy. Fresh but also quite full bodied. Lovely bdb. (1649 views)
Tasted by acheng on 10/24/2018 & rated 91 points: Does not disappoint. A great champagne that is drinking very well now. (1570 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 6/22/2018: Fantastic. Intense richness, probably the best bottle yet. This feels like it has arrived at the early peak. (294 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/3/2018 & rated 93 points: 2015 Terre Nere (Chicago, IL): I thought that this was an outstanding bottle of champagne. It's got a roundness and richness that many more modern examples don't have (including from the same house, I'd like to add). There's a slight hint of creaminess on the palate that I love. On the other hand, there's certainly enough acidity here that this doesn't just flop around. In a great spot now -- I'll certainly consider hitting a few more of my bottles. (3326 views)

(Pierre Gimonnet et Fils "Spécial Club de Collection" Brut) ($108.00) My notes are consistent about how incipient this wine is, in contrast to the generally friendly open nature of ’02. This is disgorged 12/10, and one feels it ready to erupt like popcorn kernels in a hot popper. It’s almost got the Magnum-personality even in bottle. Patience is needed, and will, I think, be justified.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
