Tasted by bjamesclark on 4/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted off the moderate sediment.
The wine has evolved much since my last note; aromas show notes of black licorice, forest floor, sagebrush, dried herbs, bay leaf and dried lavender, ground pepper, dried blueberry, smoked cherries, cedarwood, old leather, and dried meats with hints of olive tapenade.
On the palate the wine has resolved into a savory version. Tannins have completely resolved and smoothed out. The acidity is still sappy and the fleshy texture is round and showing a slight warmth of the abv. Flavors mimic the nose with savory streaks of dried herbs, earth, dried meats, pepper, tapenade, dried berries, and hints of woodsmoke and lavender. The finish lingers.

Still enjoyable but time to drink up. (316 views)
Tasted by Grandin7 on 11/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Opened up tight. Needed an hour and then the Grenache came through. I think it is at its top with maybe a few more years. (760 views)
Tasted by Lockareff on 6/13/2020 & rated 94 points: My last bottle and it was fantastic. In a perfect zone right now. (1161 views)
Tasted by larrybbaldwin on 4/17/2020 & rated 89 points: More red fruit in the nose with medium intensity aromas and straightforward fruit. Firm grainy tannins persist. Good but not more (1152 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 11/4/2019: From my friend's cellar, this saw an hour in the decanter. Not knowing the blend, I would guess syrah, as the aromatics have a mix of blood, white flower and some olive. The palate has some tang, with some grippy, riper red fruits. Tasted alongside the 2011 Linne Calodo Overthinker, which for my taste is better balanced than this Ditch Digger. The latter is sweeter for me, more jammy, and it's not as refined as the LC. Overall, just a bit too sweet in tone for me, but I do know many people enjoy this style. (1875 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 10/19/2019 & rated 94 points: A vibrant, dynamic crowd pleaser, with raspberry and black pepper dancing on the palette, setting up for some lasting acid and finish on the back end. Paired nicely with the balsamic glaze and shaved parm atop the arugula and fire-grilled porterhouse. (1181 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 3/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted an hour with some vigorous swirling. A stunning GSM with elegantly restrained dark fruit, solid backbone coupled with negligible acidity (which is good in my palate's opinion) and firm gripping tannins. 93+ (1177 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 12/3/2018: Seemed young, hard edged and in need of integration of its components. I was not getting much beyond the lush fruity side. Maybe it would calm in a few more years. (1214 views)
Tasted by r4Cali on 9/15/2018 & rated 94 points: In peak drinking window. Highly enjoyable with a lot of depth (1053 views)
Tasted by GlenviewGSW on 9/14/2018: Dark purple in the glass although with an emerging clear rim. Smoked blackberry on the nose. Well balanced with a long polished finish, (947 views)
Tasted by JERB on 3/2/2018 & rated 93 points: Has really aged well! In its youth it was bursting with red fruits. It is now really well balanced and integrated. So good! Last one of this vintage. (1395 views)
Tasted by passion4wine on 1/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Fantastic. Balanced, structured, and packed with fruit and just a great mouthfeel—proof an aged ditch can dig deep :) (1010 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 1/6/2018 & rated 92 points: Pnp, drank over 45 min. Best glass was last. Rich, full fruits, smooth. Drink now with decant or hold/drink-2020. (1165 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 8/20/2017: PnP, consumed with filet and roasted potatoes. The wine went well with the steak and my wife commented that while it was bigger than we typically like, she wishes we had continued to buy. While it did go well with the steak, it was way too big and fruit forward in my opinion. (1609 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 8/18/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP. Deep, lush and a little sweet on the palate with dark fruit and a nice finish. Deb loved it. (1467 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 7/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 20 min., then rebottled for ride to restaurant. Opened & poured 45 min later, drank over 1 1/2 hours. Dark, dense & delicious. (1390 views)
Tasted by sesalmon on 7/21/2017 & rated 92 points: A big beautiful wine that says Grenache Plus; smooth and polished with wonderful fruit, with hints of spice, earth, tobacco and wood. My favorite Denner wine. (1199 views)
Tasted by tckoonce on 4/27/2017: Excellent full flavor (1506 views)
Tasted by mattdathan on 3/13/2017 & rated 94 points: Beautiful wine. Aged perfectly - smooth, elegant, integrated with all the lovely fruit notes, wood plus hints of earthy tobacco. (1199 views)
Tasted by johnny1206 on 11/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Very good flavors and good finish (1586 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 8/28/2016 & rated 95 points: Rhone wines with friends (The Posk's): Gorgeous showing for this wine. While not at peak maturity, I can't imagine this getting better. At first blush I rated this 93 and going back at the end of the night, raised it a couple of points. Purple in color. The nose has plums, black raspberries and some brown tobacco. Also a slight candied note. Great lush texture. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries, plums, dark cherries and licorice. Shows a tight complexity that unwinds in the glass. Good balance. Long, long finish. Every sip makes me take notice despite a lot of wine. No hurry, but why wait? Love to re-taste in a few years to find out. (2308 views)
Tasted by mhenry on 6/6/2016: Soft tannins. Ready to go now. (1901 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 4/23/2016: Meh, a bit too fruit forward for my liking. I used to love these wines but Paso fruit just doesn't do it for me anymore. (1652 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 2/23/2016 & rated 91 points: 90-91 pts; Another one holding up nicely, lots of dark fruit, plenty of spice, a little on the heavy side, tannins were nice, not too overwhelming. (1810 views)
Tasted by BigTex22 on 1/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Decanted. Smooth, aromatic, well knitted, but it didn't wow me like last time. Well made though. Drink now through 2020. GOOD. (1631 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
