Tasted by acorelli on 4/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Very good example of a wine built for drinking on its own. Big, rich. (363 views)
Tasted by BradboBaggins on 8/18/2023 & rated 93 points: In a beautiful place, plenty of brambly fruit, wonderful mouthfeel, some forest floor notes creeping in to bring complexity. This is what well aged Carlisle is all about. (572 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 2/28/2023 & rated 94 points: From yesterday, no detailed notes. For my tastes, drinking at peak. Balanced, resolved, but still plenty of fruit depth and character (e.g. not over the hill). If I can find my other bottle, I'll be drinking it in the next year or so. No reason to wait. (737 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 4/29/2021 & rated 91 points: Ticks in sooo high on the yummy scale! Not the finest Papera ever, just a great Zin (1405 views)
Tasted by ssouth on 3/28/2021 & rated 95 points: Screams well made zin. Bursting with flavor. Lovely integration of black fruits and earth. Alc 15.4% is handled well. Very pure (1294 views)
Tasted by WineJ2019 on 1/7/2021 & rated 92 points: Ripe rich Zin coming in at 15.4%. Showing strong at 11 yrs old. Interesting to try this one as I’m relatively new to Carlisle. (1238 views)
Tasted by texaswinelover on 12/18/2020: God this was GOOD tonight. Rich, ripe, briary, brambly, clean, balanced, lingering finish. Delicious acidity. Last bottle from this vintage. My overall fave for single vineyard zins from Carlisle. Right in my wheelhouse. (1125 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 11/11/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP. No detailed notes. Took 20-30 minutes to open up. Great mix of red, dark and anise. (927 views)
Tasted by texaswinelover on 7/18/2020: Absolutely stellar bottle. Perfect condition, everything anyone wants in a zin. 15.4% etoh, balanced impeccably, deep deep rich fruit, wild and briary with underbrush and forest floor. Lingering finish that goes for 45 seconds. My favorite zin vineyard from Carlisle. (632 views)
Tasted by mdahar on 3/14/2020 & rated 94 points: This is a great bottle I do not see it getting any better. Has a huge of brown around the edge. Still a tad hot but balance with acid (810 views)
Tasted by btock on 12/14/2019 & rated 94 points: From Magnum. This was a special bottle. With grapes picked on the day my daughter was born, I had saved a Mag of it until she turned 10. Found the right night to open it with several Carlisle fans and it did not disappoint. WOTN from several in the room and great depth of flavor and balance. I make a point of not aging my zins much past 6yrs from vintage date so I was worried that this may have turned to the dark side, but those worries were misplaced. Beautiful and right in the zone. Deep rich purple fruits, bit of loam, nice mellow fragrance. Such a pleasure to have a special bottle perform. The other surprise was I had kept the bottle in its original tissue paper wrapping, which I only took off before serving, and underneath was a hand written Happy Birthday note on the bottle from Mike O. to my daughter that I had unknowingly had in my cellar for 8 years! (771 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 12/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Still very good, but maybe getting a little long in the tooth. (865 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 7/16/2019 & rated 90 points: Last bottle. Delicious but maybe a little tired. Drank with grilled brats. Still plenty of fruit but a little pruney. (1159 views)
Tasted by Wine Poor on 6/8/2019 & rated 93 points: This is my last bottle so I’m using the Coravin to try to stretch it out over a few weeks.
Delicious dark fruit and earthy notes on the palate.
Huge bouquet of fruit compote.
Great wine (920 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/11/2019 & rated 93 points: Delicious zinfandel with rich, concentrated fruit, black raspberries, black cherries, blackberries, and plums, and hints of licorice and earthiness. Well balanced wine with a smooth medium to long finish. (947 views)
Tasted by Badfish on 3/27/2019: Carlisle once occupied a large portion of my cellar but that is no longer the case due to palate shift. This is one of the lone bottles from a case that survived the cull. These wines are not my style but they clearly occupy the apex of the big Zin pyramid. Overripe, heady, alcoholic, but so so seductive with creme de cassis, slate, creosote, olive tampenade, licorice, lavender. The palate is sweet with earthy spice driven berry compote, supple tannins, and crisp acidity. Carlisle has always structured their wines so well, this expression is no exception. Their wines are exceedingly ripe but they have always pulled off the style well. (1088 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 3/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Still drinking well but passed it's drinking window so I took it to our Tuesday tennis league where the 4 of us enjoyed an aged Zin. Everyone enjoyed it. I thought it was a little on the sweet side, but still very nice. (1035 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 12/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Terrific bottle. Dark purple hue. Dark berry, spicy nose. Bottle mellowed as it opened up. Silky smooth, nice full bodied wine. Great showing. (1059 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 12/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Aging quite well, there’s an enjoyable interplay between the acidity and fruit. Blueberry, red fruit bowl, honeyed cashews, earth, spice and some dried flowers. A delineated and a medium-long finish with roundness, the secondary nuances are really coming out, and there remains goregeous fruit. Drink now - 2022. (1360 views)
Tasted by DNAWineGuy on 8/14/2018 & rated 94 points: Classic Carlisle Zin. Plum and blueberry up front with a very noticeable black pepper finish. Still has aging potential. (1098 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 4/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Dark crimson in color. 15.4% ABV. Exquisite nose of black fruits, licorice and white pepper. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Slightly lighter in style than I expect from Carlisle but more likely a reflection of nine years of bottle age. Black raspberry, cream, anise and pepper on the palate. Medium length on the finish. Super Zinfandel from one of the very best vineyards in the Russian River Valley. Drink over the next year or so. (1409 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 2/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted through a Menu aerating decanter and returned to the bottle to take to a dinner party. No detailed notes. Rich, smooth and flavorful. No hurry to drink soon. (1345 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 2/10/2018 & rated 93 points: This is drinking great. Berry core with chocolate, mint, lavender and beautiful integration. Amazing value. (1402 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 2/9/2018 & rated 93 points: After a couple hours this was really singing. Little disjointed on opening, but gradually opened up with rich purple fruit, spices and nice mild peppery edges. Plenty of life left in this Zin, which is good news with 2 bottles left! (1145 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 2/9/2018 & rated 93 points: Great spot

2009 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch

Winemakers Notes:
Mother Nature blessed Papera Ranch with both quality and quantity in 2009, providing us with a wine that rivals our much-lauded 2007. But what Mother Nature giveth, she also taketh away. The entire crop was lost in 2010 on August 24th due to heat. If you are a fan of what we have done with this vineyard the last few years, I encourage you to take advantage of the quantity available. Picked October 10th. Fermented indigenously. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Note: Dark ruby-garnet. Verging on opaque. Black raspberry, fresh cream, licorice, and herbs provide a fabulous sniff. On the palate, incredibly concentrated with great weight and mouth-feel. Seemingly darker and deeper than previous vintages. Totally dry but at the same time Chambord-like with laser-like acidity to keep the mouth refreshed. Papera Ranch is truly one of the great old-vine vineyards of California. Enjoy this magnificent Zinfandel from release through 2017.

Papera Ranch

Papera Ranch (Formerly Carlo's Ranch) vineyard is an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa in the Russian River AVA, Sonoma County, California. Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. These old vines are head trained and dry farmed to produce high quality harvests, resulting in intensely flavorful grapes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
