Tasted by LaCucina - antiristorante on 5/19/2024 & rated 95 points: Slow ox 1 hour prior to tasting. Clear and bright with a garnet rim. Fully developed and complex nose with pleasant tertiary notes of cigar box, pencil shavings, leather - all backed up by a black fruit core of fresher fruit. Balanced palate with well integrated tannins and enveloped in mature fruit. Most likely reached it peak 20-10 to 2015, but still very pleasurable. Drink up! Outstanding. 95 P. (153 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 3/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Color still Good! Soft mouth feel, medium body, dark fruit flavors - fig and plum and some tobacco leaf. Finish was short but nice.
27 years old - excellent! (904 views)
Tasted by Evanbdavis on 2/2/2024 & rated 96 points: Glorious Bordeaux like nose. Roast espresso, loamy soil, sweet dark berries, black currants, licorice, truffle and cocoa. Baking spices. Palate is complete and harmonious with a long finish. (1185 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 8/9/2023 & rated 95 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of black fruits, spices, toast, pepper. Medium acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is velvety. Long finish. Drinking well now and still going strong. (2364 views)
Tasted by luxurycarmina on 7/31/2023 & rated 92 points: After a few disappointments in a 1990s Italian tasting that reinforced the notion of highly variable bottle quality this was far better. Very smooth, lots of black fruit, liquorice and as described by a former Vatican officer - scent of the sacristia from the Vatican (2041 views)
Tasted by frank411 on 7/8/2023 & rated 95 points: Drinking wonderfully. The nose was full of cherries with hints of tobacco and spice that exuded elegance that followed through on the palate with red fruits, leather, earth. Very well balanced, silky and still plenty fresh. One of the best showings for this last bottle out of a case purchased on realease. (2152 views)
Tasted by phandley66 on 6/3/2023 & rated 94 points: Best bottle so far. Huge nose. Lots of barnyard funk. Taste tons of fruit, strawberries , cherry, cassis with the earthy funk on the backend. Super tasty. Drink up!! (1964 views)
Tasted by vinopad demo on 4/25/2023: - Medium forming legs. It's unbalanced with a medium body. (2157 views)
Tasted by mfimiani47 on 12/25/2022: Unfortunately, well past it’s best. (2047 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 12/13/2022 & rated 83 points: An initial bouquet of menthol, shoe polish and leather was repeated on the palate with added notes of cream and talc. Unfortunately it was more astringent than tannic and I felt there may have been a touch of volatility as well as starting to dry out. I haven’t tasted Tignanello in a very long time but this was well past its best. Pity, as I was really looking forward to this wine in particular. CHP 83pts (2055 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 12/9/2022 & rated 92 points: rustic light (1848 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 10/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Medium reddish garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries & strawberries with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, cocoa/coffee, spices, leather, tar, anise, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering silky-smooth finish. Drinks quite well at 25 years of age but I doubt any further development would occur from additional aging, so drink up! Fill was at bottom of neck above the shoulder; cork was stained 1/2 way up but intact upon opening. (2111 views)
Tasted by t.c.green on 8/12/2022 & rated 97 points: Still at it's peak, a delicious accompaniment to risotto with scallops (2165 views)
Tasted by rickphillips on 8/2/2022: WS rated 96 (1700 views)
Tasted by reesq on 7/31/2022 & rated 94 points: Agree, its a beautiful wine right in the drinking window. Good tertiary notes, but no sign of decline. Full decant, not a lot of sediment, really opened up after an hour or so. Drank with steak, a perfect paring. Great nose, lot's of Sangiovese coming through. WOTN against the 2001 Siro Pacenti and 2003 Ornellaia. Really nice. (1571 views)
Tasted by winespine on 7/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Beautiful wine. Wine 4 from our steak and lobster dinner. Decanted, but once again, because I didn't do it, I have no idea for how long. And once again, another wine that's right in its drinking window with no obvious signs of decline. Some tertiary characteristics are creeping in, but there's still lots of Sangiovese here and enough acidity to keep it popping. Still enough power here to pair well with the steak. If I owned though, I wouldn't wait much longer on it. (1604 views)
Tasted by Milos on 7/14/2022 & rated 92 points: This was a part of 1997 and 1999 Tuscan tasting including 3 Brunellos and 2 Super Tuscans, same producers from each year. The wine is fully mature but not in a decline. Sweet red fruit on the nose and palate, intense flavours and show good structure ; tannins are resolved, The nose shows some, wood and leather, quite complex. The finish moderately long. Time to drink up. I do not think this is getting any better . (1333 views)
Tasted by sergio19 on 4/1/2022 & rated 93 points: The 1997 Tignanello has been defined as historical, the best of its century and therefore after twenty five years it is even better. The climate of 1997 has favored the wine because the temperature range of September gave it structure. It has a dark ruby color and its aroma immediately reveals its maturity. Aromas of spices, cocoa, roasted coffee. Hints mentholated to penetrating. In the mouth it has very good tannins but they do not leave a bitter aftertaste. Good ending. (1597 views)
Tasted by Elpaninaro on 12/16/2021: attractive medium red color, beautifully textured nose of evenly aligned dried leaves, wonderfully precise, dried berries, on the palate a perfectly mature and cuddly cherry fruit core surrounded by racy tea and dried leaf textures, good fragrant finish, plums with time, just starting to pass its best but still in a great place, carpe diem.

***+, drink soon. (1925 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 12/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Muted red color. Rhubarb, white oak, red raspberry and earth. Smooth, rounded wine with elegant flavors and subtleties of minerality, ash and blueberry. Rounded, lighter tannins and drinking quite lovely!

p.s. meatloaf, mashed potatoes and shisito peppers. (2503 views)
Tasted by VinoTx on 12/5/2021 & rated 91 points: Bottom of neck. Great cherry, earth, acidity, and a pretty long finish, but time to drink. (2153 views)
Tasted by phandley66 on 11/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Drinking much better than last bottle I had. Definitely bottle variation, this one is from different case. Much more alive, vibrant. Great acidity, long finish. Lots of cherry pie notes. Still some tannin left. Would drink over next couple years but definitely drinking well. (2349 views)
Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 10/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Drunk in Palazzo Antinori - Firenze

The nose here signals the transition to tertiary aromas, notably with prominent tobacco and a touch of smoke.

The palate is smooth, like being in a cigar humidor, with a bright black cherry. The wine expresses itself in an obvious maturity, with a good balance and a sweet oak, on a dominant tobacco and leather. The leather dominates in an intense way on the finish.

Excellent but little lack of depth and structure in my opinion. (2360 views)
Tasted by Radders12345 on 9/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Tuscany WIMPS; 9/30/2021-10/1/2021 (La Trompette): Nose of fig, wet earth, wood, tobacco.

Palate of dried cherry, fig, initially a little sharp on the finish with tannins still pretty prominent but improved a lot with air, evening out and becoming more balanced. (2007 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 9/2/2021 & rated 94 points: Nice nose of red fruit, dark cherries, a hint of smoke, and leather. Good acidity on the palate with velvety structure and integrated tannins along with dark fruit and dark berries. Nice finish. It feels plush and polished, but not boring. This wine is in a good place right now. Fully mature without being old or tired. (2115 views)

Producer Location - Tenuta Tignanello (Google Maps)
The Antinori family has produced wine since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Winemakers Guild. Throughout its long history (across 26 generations) the family has always managed winemaking in person. Today, the company is managed by Marquis Piero Antinori. The company has dedicated great efforts to improving the quality of its wines, through careful planning of investments and research programs embracing all production aspects. The success of these programs has enabled the company to produce a superb range of quality wines from its various estates in Tuscany and Umbria. The Tignanello Estate is home to the famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. Located between the Greve and Pesa Valleys, in the heart of the Chianti Classic area, 30 kilometers south of Florence, Tignanello boasts 350 hectares of land with 147 hectares of vines. The vineyards are divided into small, individual areas over an area of 47 hectares at Tignanello, facing South-West, and the neighboring 10 hectares at Solaia, both with Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes that benefit from specific exposure and micro-climate.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.

Tignanello

The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine. Tignanello, originally a Chianti Classico Riserva labeled Vigneto Tignanello, was first vinified as a single vineyard wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak cooperage. With the 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates. Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in the 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages.
