Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 102 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NiklasW on 7/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted for an hour. The nose is really nice, with smoky red fruit, sour cherries and even a hint of tomato paste. The palate is dominated by racy acidity, strong tannins, red fruit with good minerality. Everything you could wish for in a Mencia, in an excellent spot right now. (1253 views)
Tasted by NiklasW on 3/15/2019: Decanted for an hour. This has the typical racey red fruit I associate with Mencia, but also a bit of mocha and smoke. The palate shows nice tannins and burning red fruit. There seems to be a hint of cork taint here, so I will not score the wine, if it were not for that, I'd say this is ripe and ready and should be rather nice. (2179 views)
Tasted by Grochol on 2/9/2019 & rated 81 points: Nose: red fruits, meat, earth, spices, nice
Taste: medium bodied, medium tannins, medium+ acidity, red currant, cherry, wild berry, earth, unfortunately short with very strange and unpleasant finish of sauerkraut, VA? too old? (2044 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 6/8/2018 & rated 87 points: Wish those who wrote reviews would give scores based on the Community rating guide...many give no scores.
Not as good as prior vintages, but decent, not outstanding.
Second night was a bit better. Agree earthy and really dark fruit.
First night was thin, second was a little more grippy.
First night 86, second night 88, averages to 87.
On the fence as to buying more. It was interesting, but we are a Rioja family when it comes to Spanish wines. (2815 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 10/13/2017 & rated 91 points: So beautiful at this point - nose well balanced between oak, cherry, cinnamon, cocoa and rose hip, on the palate well balanced mix of stir-fried yellow onion, black pepper, black currant and blackberries, with a hint of dairy. Quite thick, medium+ length, intense. (3733 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 10/7/2017 & rated 87 points: Earthy (almost dirty, in a good way), cherry, dark herbs. Nice, fine tannin and good acidity. Medium finish of sour cherries and currants. Nice. (3119 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 8/18/2017: Very enjoyable wine that I've had multiple times now; nose is a little darker and muskier than my earlier bottles, but still has cherry, blood orange, along with some black currant and violet. The palate has very nice material with still notable tannins, but enough acidity and fruit to balance them nicely. Still an excellent value wine and a fun wine to explore if you have never had the Mencia grape. (2768 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 7/14/2017: Ripe cherry nose, with earthy and savory notes, and a bit of VA. On the palate, very earthy, rich cherry, and a bit of older-wine liquor. This still has some nice structure, but with the VA, is getting on in age and was nearly dead after about two hours. Drink now. (2924 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 5/26/2017: No VA in this bottle, and a nice sour note with gravely earthy character. Good. (2610 views)
Tasted by Vinopolis on 2/25/2017 & rated 84 points: Ripe berry fruit with cedar, smoke and savoury spice on the nose. Continues on the palate with more black cherry, bramble and ripe plum. A hint of florals with still reasonably prominent tannin. Ha softened with age but was a bit flat and lacking in he mid palate. Still great wine and very complex but was expecting a little more, especially mid palate. Maybe drink younger or decant in future and see if it just needed more air?? (2481 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 2/14/2017: Rich, earthy, and herbal, but with a distracting bitter lifted note. Nice structure, with chewy tannin and medium acid; full bodied. Simple, enjoyable, but with that VA note that seems to invade this wine to varying degrees, and this time with an additional off-putting bitter note. (2345 views)
Tasted by fedro on 2/14/2017 & rated 89 points: Better than the previous bottle and more evolved on day 2 (2035 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 2/11/2017: Clear dark red. Very soft, with fine-grained tannins. Has lost a little backbone compared to earlier bottles of this vintage. (1819 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 12/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Quite a bit of variation across bottles (mostly in amount of VA) and quite a change over time. Initially, quite rich and liquor like with darker fruit and herbs. With lots of air, the richness subsided somewhat, and the nose opened up quite a bit, revealing forest floor, herbs, dark berries, sour cherry. Low but quite chewy tannin and medium-low acid. Bit of bitterness on the finish, along with a lifted liquor note that I'm not fond of. Overall, a nice wine that can probably age another couple of years. (2200 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/15/2016: Very herbal; bright, lifted red fruit. Shows a bit liquor-like initially, but changes over a couple of days to show more dried flowers and earth. (1981 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/6/2016: This bottle didn't show the VA of previous bottles. Herbal, rich. (1979 views)
Tasted by garambler on 10/29/2016 & rated 89 points: Mencia & Rabbit Stew Dinner (Mukilteo, Washington): This had a fragrant, expressive bouquet of raspberry, cherry, plum, spice and mineral aromas. The palate was tart, crisp and medium bodied with flavors of cherry, raspberry, mineral and spice. The group’s average score was 90.50 (2190 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 10/16/2016 & rated 84 points: Very herbal, with berries and kirsch. Herbal cherries on the palate with a bit of a liquor note as well. Chewy tannin. Alcohol shows through. Just okay. (1932 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 10/12/2016: Some VA. Lifted red fruit with herbs and dried flowers on the nose. Tart. Drinking well now. (1663 views)
Tasted by MichaelSy on 10/9/2016 & rated 90 points: It did need a decant. Soft supple tannins on the back end. The Sept 7 comment is pretty spot on. Just super easy to drink. Probably has another few good years. At 50 AUD it is pretty fairly priced.

Enjoy! (1552 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 9/7/2016 & rated 90 points: With Kelvin in 13 degrees Wine Bar. A very pleasant wine, this delivered really good value for its price. It had a nicely interesting nose, with bits of herb and bramble, scorched earth and coffee grounds mingling with a core of dark berry aromas. I liked the palate too. It had a decent depth and weight to its ripe dark berry and bramble character, but also enough clarity and freshness so that it wore its 14% very lightly indeed. Fine tannins still have a rather solid chew past the midpalate and into a nicely long finish infused with spiced notes. With time, little savoury, meat suggestions started showing up. Enjoyable, and it should improve in the next few years too. (2296 views)
Tasted by Pjq1 on 7/10/2016 & rated 88 points: Nice - we opened it up for about half an hour beforehand and that rounded it out a bit. Good QFP (2071 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 4/28/2016: A little darker and actually slightly more closed than my last bottle. Still overall a very nice wine. Dark fruit, floral, hint of orange peel, and spice. Palate is a little denser than I recall, but still balanced and quite tasty. Maybe closing down a little bit, but still quite enjoyable. (2565 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 4/10/2016: What a great value, this bottle! Easy to drink, easy to like, but still delivering serious quality: crisp, well-delineated fruit, medium body, medium finish. Entices one to explore other Spanish wines. (2506 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 4/8/2016 & rated 87 points: Herbal, earthy and black fruit nose. Herbal flavors with tart, wood concentric finish. (2395 views)

Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Pétalos

Descendientes de Jose Palacios’ first vintage was 1999. The men in charge are Ricardo Perez and legendary vigneron Alvaro Palacios.

Mencía

Mencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.

The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.

Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Castilla y León

Castilla y León Wine (Turismo Castilla y León )

Bierzo

[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.

The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].

Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
