Community Tasting Notes (average 93.6 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 141 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by platpeeps on 4/9/2024 & rated 94 points: Soft and easy with full, ripe and voluptuous black fruits supported by melting tannins. From the mid-palate onwards it developed mocha and black chocolate leading to a full and satisfying lingering finish. Plenty of life ahead but so approachable and drinkable now.  Tasted by Hppr Cellar on 2/24/2024 & rated 94 points: Nice effort. Was much more integrated after a 2 hr decant. Still love the 2016 better but this wine will be very good for a long time I think. (2074 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/23/2024 & rated 92 points: Friday Group Brown Bag Tasting (R&D’s): Double blind. Dark color with notes of currants, mocha, mulberry and spice with an herbal/greenish undertone that I find very appealing. Full-bodied and firm, with a youthful structure and black fruit lingering on the finish. On the first pass I was convinced this was a young Napa blend with a nice dollop of franc. It wasn’t until just before we began discussing these that its origin began to reveal itself. A chocolate note joined the black fruit, but the palate lagged behind and lacked a certain generosity of fruit that made me think perhaps it was Bordeaux. Fine, sweet tannin with flavors of black currant and green tobacco. I feel great that I guessed 2009 Pauillac, though I never suspected PLL, which is a property I have pegged on several prior occasions. I don’t know how this bottle was prepared for the tasting other than I was told it had not been decanted. Still youthful and tight, if I had any of this I would hold off another five years at least…will be a stunner when it reaches its peak. (R&D) (1963 views)
Tasted by dream on 1/30/2024 & rated 94 points: Very much in the style of the vintage in that it’s ripe and layered with a certain warmth and supple texture even if the tannins are still substantial. However, like the best ‘09’s, it shows decent acidity and a nice minty freshness on the finish. I liked it a lot and I think it will grow very complex with more bottle age. 94+ (2602 views)
Tasted by Yohansmas on 12/18/2023:

(2978 views)
Tasted by Ohlawuly on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Open-up after 4 hours of aeration. Medium ruby with purple hue. Dark fruit, some pencil shaving, and a little chocolate. The 5% Petit Verdot in the wine seems not very expressive. Medium-to-full bodied. The palate is rich and juicy, and all the flavors would coat your entire mouth like a raincoat. However, the finish is somewhat flat and a little short. (2819 views)
Tasted by iBurg1229 on 11/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Vintage Wine - Bordeaux Tasting 11/11/23: 13% ABV. Medium ruby core, prominent garnet rim. Decanted for 2.5 hours.

Notes of blackberry, cassis, lilacs, graphite, tobacco leaf. Elegant, light-as-feather mouthfeel. Juicy acidity gives a nice sense of freshness. Tannins are rounding out and approachable. Good length of finish.

This was tasted next to an ‘09 Ducru Beaucaillou and this fell a bit flat against the Ducru. Regardless, a solid vintage by Pichon Lalande but just lacks the depth and concentration to take this to the next level. Relatively open now with a good decant as with a lot of ‘09s, but can cellar for many more years. (2606 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 10/15/2023: From magnum at a wedding, this wasn't perhaps the optimal setting for sorting this out - but this example showed similarly to the last. A very fine drink and easy to enjoy, though it feels far from showing all of its cards. Coiffed, ripe red fruit, relatively long in the mouth but not obvious at this point. (3690 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 10/12/2023 & rated 96 points: Blindtasting of 7 great favorites of our winestore supplier in Mallorca: Blindtasting of 7 great favorites of our winestore supplier in Mallorca.

What a wine! Deep ruby. Black fruit, green bell pepper, cedar, tobacco, chocolate.
High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, full body, pronounced intensity and a very long finish. Classical, could only be Bordeaux left bank Pauillac, and so it was. Without doubt an outstanding wine at a good ageing level right now. I really like that development level: Still lots of fruit but also appropriate tertiary notes.

Tasted by BellevuePhil on 9/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Nestled within the heart of Bordeaux, Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2009 stands as a testament to the enduring charm of the region's wines. This vintage, in particular, is a jewel in the crown of Bordeaux, and my encounter with it at a remarkable cocktail party on the estate in 2009 remains etched in memory.

The setting was as enchanting as one could imagine. The chateau itself, a stately masterpiece of 17th-century architecture, was bathed in the soft glow of twilight. Its ivy-clad façade whispered stories of centuries gone by, and the sprawling vineyards that surrounded it stretched out as far as the eye could see. This was the stage for a soirée that would leave an indelible mark on my wine journey.

The guests gathered in the courtyard, a diverse assembly of wine enthusiasts, aficionados, maybe a Trump, maybe a Rothschild, and connoisseurs from around the world. It was a testament to the wine's global allure. As we mingled and exchanged anecdotes, the air was filled with the symphony of clinking glasses, my blues guitar, some herb, and animated conversation.

The star of the evening, without a doubt, was the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2009.

As the bottles were uncorked, the anticipation in the air was palpable. This Bordeaux blend, a harmonious marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, unfurled in the glass with elegance.

The first encounter with the 2009 vintage was like stepping into a world of sensory delight. Its deep garnet hue hinted at the treasures held within. The aromas that swirled upward were intoxicating: blackcurrant, ripe plum, and the faintest whisper of vanilla, all mingling seamlessly. The wine seemed to possess a quiet confidence, promising an experience that would transcend the ordinary.

With the first sip, time itself seemed to slow. The wine enveloped the palate with layers of complexity. The black fruit danced harmoniously with notes of cedar, tobacco, and a gentle earthiness, all underscored by the unmistakable terroir of Bordeaux. It was velvety on the tongue, with refined tannins that caressed rather than commanded attention. The finish lingered, leaving a symphony of flavors to savor long after the glass was empty.

Oh and with the bolognese spaghetti ... .What can I say? Waves of evaporation mixing like lovers with the meat sauce.

As the evening progressed, the 2009 vintage continued to enchant. It paired seamlessly with the culinary delights on offer, enhancing the flavors and elevating the experience. Each subsequent pour revealed new facets, a testament to the wine's depth and nuance.

Yet, the wine was not the sole protagonist of the night's tale. An unexpected twist emerged, adding an element of intrigue to the story. Among the chateau's staff, a young French maid, unobtrusive yet captivating, undertook the turn-down service for the evening. Her presence was like a whisper amidst the lively conversations and clinking glasses. She brought another bottle of the 2009 and lets just say it was breathtaking the second time.

It was during a brief encounter with this maid that I glimpsed another layer of the chateau's mystique. She moved with a grace and elegance that mirrored the very essence of the wine we had gathered to celebrate. Her attention to detail was nothing short of remarkable, and her demeanor, a reflection of the chateau's timeless charm. In her own way, she became a part of the story that unfolded that evening.

As the night waned and the stars adorned the Bordeaux sky, I couldn't help but reflect on the profound experience that was the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2009. It was more than a wine; it was a journey through time and taste, a testament to the legacy of Bordeaux winemaking.

In closing, the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2009 remains a cherished chapter in my vinous adventures. Its allure, much like the enchanting chateau and the unassuming French maid, is a reminder of the magic that wine can weave, and the moments it etches into the tapestry of our lives. Bordeaux's finest, encapsulated in a single bottle, is an experience worth savoring, cherishing, and sharing with kindred spirits.

Note to self: 1 hour decant is perfect as of this date. And, should serve with pastas or deep steaks... (2424 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/12/2023: This is in an awkward place. Perhaps we simply caught it with the wrong amount of air. Somewhat smudged details; dark fruit, pencil, smoke, espresso, cocoa. Still showing a lot of oak. Big-ish, coiffed. Perhaps too much so. (3957 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 7/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Nose: Dark berries, black cherry, cedar and a touch of heat.

Palate: Sumptuous dark cherry, cassis and date notes with well integrated spice and graphite. A bit of heat on the palate here, but a very strong modern styled wine.

There was a large presence in this wine, and it did OK maintaining balance. Delicious, a jolly fellow. (3042 views)
Tasted by 40ozProphet on 5/28/2023 & rated 94 points: I did a quick glass before decanting, using an aerator, and off the bat this shows such tremendous promise - graphite, blackberry, and licorice - just hard on the nose at first. Like so many others, I agree that this needs either air or time, the latter is recommended for such a quality vintage and bottle.

After 4 hours in the decanter, this showed up, giving tremendous depth with subtly. It was the second bottle of the evening after a Vineyard 29 which was a heavy hitter and probably worked us backwards. Regardless, reminding us why Pichon continues to give great quality and class. Once this opened up, this gave notes of dark berry jam, minerals, salt, bramble, tobacco, and slight vanilla - tannic structure is delicate but helps offer a velvety finish. By hour 6/7, this did start to soften and I strongly believe there’s a sweet spot right now if you’re venturing into this. This vintage leverages a much higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon: coming in at 75% which takes us above and beyond the typical 55%-65%. (3282 views)

Tasted by sh6k on 3/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Super closed after opening. After an hour it opened up (somewhat) into a tight elegant package of blackberries and hints of passion fruit or something tropical and coming into the finish flashes of beef jerky and finally a long finish of graphite and lemon. Refined and full of finesse, but not a lot of exuberance. Maybe if I decanted for longer?

Day 3: after 2 days in the wine squirrel plus 3 hours of decanting — open and fruity and still a tight elegant package. Beautiful. Sadly, after another hour all the beauty has faded and it tastes tired. So decant but do it carefully I guess. (3076 views)

Since my visit in early 2000 when i did a tour, luncheon & tasting of many vintages back to 1961 I have loved this wine. I don't know if it's the wine or my memories, but I can't stop appreciating Pichon Lalande. The 09 have has dark beautiful fruit, lovely color, a great month feel with beautifully integrated tannins.  Tasted by Happytoro on 12/3/2022 & rated 90 points: Going off memory but was underwhelming compared to pedigree, vintage, and reviews. The nose was reticent. Taste was indistinguishable. Tannins were fine. Decanted over 2 hours and drank over 2 hours. I'm wondering if the food overpowered the wine, or if it needed more time to open up. (3171 views)

Tasted by stayhappy21 on 11/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Tasted this wine at the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Masterclass during the International Congress of Chinese Cuisine & Wine at the Goodwood Park Hotel.

Poised, with good intensity, well structured and loaded with refined power. Surprisingly refreshing; a modern wine made in superb terrior under the hands of an excellent wine maker makes this a fantastic wine.

A wine to keep for the ages and the children and grandchildren. (3142 views)
Tasted by Psdycp on 11/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose is still closed. Hints of ripe black fruits, graphite, tobacco, licorice and earthy spices after sometime in the glass. Palate echoed the nose. Equally shy but with good structure, depth and length on a medium to full-bodied palate. Transition to the finish is clean and full. Still need more time for the wine to open up. Decant for an hour if you are drinking now. A wine build for decades. 92-94 pts. (2724 views)
Tasted by ShangGuy on 11/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Purple, brown hue, incredibly strong earthy aroma. First taste is a burst of dark fruits, leather, ash, earth, medium tannins. Finish is long, earthy, not powerful but subtle earthy flavours. Nice and drinking well. (2404 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
