Tasted by walkerjfw on 2/24/2024 & rated 96 points: In Birmingham with Anne and Steve, wonderful dinner at their home cooked by Steve. A real treat to have this one from their cellar. Well stored bottle, decanted about an hour prior to drinking.

Deep garnet/purple color, still vibrant and no real thinning. Nose showing black and blue fruits, licorice and earth. Rich palate of blackberry, raspberry, kirsch, licorice, cocoa, herbs. Dark and blue fruits persist through the finish. Tannins starting to resolve, smooth texture Full body, long finish...

A big and expressive wine 22 years in. Rich and opulent, the "Rutherford dust" signature is prominent. Stylistically, this may not be for everyone, but well made and aging beautifully. A real star on this evening and perfect with grilled steaks and savory foods. (300 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/21/2023 & rated 97 points: Regular dinner group (@ My place): Deep and complex bouquet with dark berries, licorice and sweet spices. On the palate dark berries like blackberries, licorice, black olives, dark chocolate, beautifully integrated oak and cedar, some graphite, beautiful acidity and round tannin. Overall a mouth full of beautiful and complex wine which is still in its young maturity stage. A Feast! (1570 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 11/24/2022: Thanksgiving Wimps 2022 - James Baldwin Table (La Trompette): 14.8% abv, and clearly the bruiser of the flight. By this stage my handwritten notes are getting vague and indecipherable, but I have "gorgeous, mouth big, booze big" and - that's pretty much how it was. Alongside such refined company it felt a little clumsy - i suspect if one could contemplate this for what it is, without distraction, it would be a different experience. (1177 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/18/2022 & rated 95 points: Still deep in color after 20 years. Rich, concentrated black and blue fruits in the nose and flavor. Blackberries, black raspberries, black currants, plums, with some chocolate, coffee, and hints of licorice and minerality. An elegant wine, well balanced, medium to full bodied, nice complexity, and a long smooth finish (1615 views)
Tasted by melal41 on 4/8/2022 & rated 96 points: Absolutely outstanding 20 year young cab from Staglin.
20 year Anniversary as well.
Did not decant and cork had signs of seepage. Nose was impressive from the start and wine tasted smooth. Then gained balance and fine tannins shined through delicious fruit. Medium to full body, opulent, classic Staglin.
Last one sadly. (1833 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 2/20/2022: nose - blueberry, blackberry
mouth - intense, concentrated, high alcohol, a bit of a bruiser for fans of a more elegant style. Perfect as the end of the night bottle. Alexander the great found it 'young' but I'm not convinced there is any upside to holding this longer. (1913 views)
Tasted by mk42 on 6/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Rich month feel with remarkable big soft tannins entwined with “Rutherford bench" minerals. The fruits have stepped back, but robust, full-sized mix of boysenberries, ripe dark plums, black currents with dark ripe cherries, black raspberries and other notes. Finish drops back to complex minerals with hints of coffee, tobacco and dark chocolate. Enjoy with a great meal soon.
Wow! Does not need decant. If possible, finish the bottle with some dark chocolates and reflect on the 19 years since harvest it took to create this wine experience. (1882 views)
Tasted by jim_crane on 2/21/2021: In a marvelous spot. Humming on all cylinders. (2068 views)
Tasted by fournet on 2/10/2021 & rated 93 points: After about 30 minutes this was in a great spot. Ready to drink now. A little more fruit than I like but nicely balances. (1738 views)
Tasted by perlasteve on 9/21/2020 & rated 90 points: Birthday party with delicious tomahawk steaks. Decided to have fun and open a bottle of the Staglin 2002 and of the 2007. In the past a number of years ago the 2002 was bomb (as my kids would say). Delicious. Smooth, chocolate flavors etc.Now the flavors were apparent up opening and faded with the dinner. Decanted but wish I hadn’t, did not need it. The 2007 on the other hand was so much better. Did not need decant. Mild tannins present. Besides the secondary core salary flavors including the cocoa, there was abundant fruit which was delicious. The palate flavors did not perish throughout the dinner. Decent but not overwhelming nose and finish. Went beautifully with the steaks. So, in summary, the 2002 should be drunk now without decant and the 2007 has a few more years and probably does not need decant. Points for the 2002 (1920 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 5/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Unless you have confidence in quality of your bottle storage, you should drink this one sooner rather than later. Did not enjoy these tastings as much as I enjoyed in 2019. Not sure if the cork held up that well. (2041 views)
Tasted by FoinZap on 3/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Robust complex cab. Red and black fruit, some earthy, coffee-type notes. Decanted for 2+ hours and while it was drinking nicely, it never really got to a point where it was blowing us away. Possibly heading into a fade. Very solid, but we didn't find it exceptional. (1725 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 12/17/2019 & rated 94 points: 14.8% ABV. Aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, medium-plus toast. I let it breathe for 30 minutes and then drank over next 1.5 hours. Similar notes as before i/c/w my May 2019 pouring, in that you really need to give this time out of the bottle (didn't read my own note before drinking). Better at hour 2 than at hour 1. Still holding up nicely. Well balanced. Good acidity, but not high. Dense and pure. Tobacco and cedar a little more prominent in this bottle than last. (1886 views)
Tasted by longhorncab on 6/23/2019 & rated 96 points: Showing beautifully after 17 years. Rich and dense on the palate, with excellent fruit and length. One of the best Cabernets ever I tasted (2415 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 5/13/2019 & rated 95 points: 14.8% ABV. Aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, medium-plus toast. I let it breathe for 30 minutes and then drank over next 2.5 hours. Better at hour 2 than at hour 1. But I'm impatient. Agree with others that this is showing very well at this point. Well balanced. Good acidity, but not high. Dense and pure. You can hold this longer, but why would you? (2014 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 1/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Double-decanted two hours before dinner and it was still evolving over the next two, probably peaking at four. Stately, masculine Cabernet made in classic style showing very well. Plenty of tannins and acid for many more years and still a little youthful while beginning to show some tertiary character. Nice wine. (2234 views)
Tasted by jim_crane on 1/4/2019: This is drinking extremely well. It is rich, balanced, and vibrant. The tannins are silky and show the expected Rutherford dust. Juicy dark fruit compliments the earthiness. Finishes with menthol and eucalyptus. A little heat but not distracting. Totally ready to drink now and seems like it could hold up for several more years. (2008 views)
Tasted by Wine Gombie on 6/27/2018 & rated 96 points: Okay let me just start off by saying this is our 20th wedding anniversary and we had an incredible and amazing dinner/wine experience tonight. 20th wedding anniversary and 20th anniversary of this Staglin Cabernet Sauvignon. How cool is that! I digress, the wine . . . . . . .

Decanted for 5 hours

Color: Very dense, deep, opaque ruby-purple with very solid, defined edges.

Nose: Cherries, Blackberries, spice, wet stone, and a woodzee terrior. There is a lush mellowness that is the underlining element that encompasses the entire nose. Every smell has a certain nicely like Miles Davis playing an aggressive muted trumpet on the “Kind of Blue” record. Nicely in your face!

Taste: Wow!! A decent backbone after 16 years. You go Staglin!! THICK & CHEWY & Yumtastic. Cherry, Red Cassis, Blackberries, Mocha, Coffee, and quite Espresso-ee. Damn that’s some good juice…..Mmmmm. There is some softening, but very well balanced tannins still holding on making this wine a great drink.

This was our 20th wedding anniversary and we paired this with Wagyu Beef Filet Mignon, Grilled Baby Bok Choy, and Crispy potatoes au Gratin. In our humble opinion this is a stunning bottle that is drinking fabulous right now, BUT, still has plenty of cellar years left. (2752 views)
Tasted by Plabella on 3/8/2018 & rated 96 points: outstanding wine. great dark fruit, balanced, long finish & great mouth feel. (2693 views)
Tasted by Vinomnivore on 12/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Definitely needed some time to breath--best after sitting over night vacuum sealed. Delicious blend of soft tannin, dust and dark fruit. (2620 views)
Tasted by farm1930 on 5/29/2017 & rated 96 points: Smooth, great flavors and full bodied. (3634 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 5/26/2017 & rated 94 points: Awesome nose of red cherry. A massive tannic wine that takes considerable effort to coax from the glass. The underlying quality is clearly evident, though, but this ideally needs another 10 years. (3469 views)
Tasted by SumCellar on 2/12/2017 & rated 96 points: Magnificent. This bottle was impeccably stored. We let this wine open in the decanter over appetizers. By the time we enjoyed entrees the wine was in full bloom. Tannins are mild, but the fruit is still distinctive. (3007 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 12/27/2016 & rated 94 points: As usual and amazing cab from Staglin. Still with tannins that need to be better attenuated. Young I would say. (2919 views)
Tasted by ewasowicz on 9/10/2016 & rated 99 points: Nose: blackberry, caramel, light oak. An awfully awesome nose.

Taste: blackberries, light spearmint, very low tannins with a long finish. This wine is really awesome!! I wish I had 6 more bottles. (3295 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
