Community Tasting Notes

Tasted by Gargantua on 2/1/2016: Hmm, interesting. A bit hot, but still poised. Big cherry fruit pokes through old leather and rotting leaves on the nose, and while the finish is a bit strict from the heat, it's still quite charming. Not bad at all. Crazy that this is 15. Neat! (1238 views)

Barberani

Producer Website

Luigi and Giovanna Barberani founded the business in 1961, and sons Bernard and Nicholas are currently in charge.

The estate is located on the Orvieto-Todi road in the hills above Lake Corbara, through which the River Tiber flows. This is in the Orvieto Classico area, the oldest production area of Orvieto wine.
The estate has 55 hectares of organic vineyards and the influence of the nearby lake allows for the production of Botrytised wines.

Niccolò Barberani is in charge of wine making, assisted by Maurizio Castelli, with father Luigi Barberani watching on.

Output is approximately 350,000 bottles.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
