Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 118 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Senso-beak on 1/7/2023 & rated 87 points: Opened and enjoyed with Turkey potted pie. Full bodied, classic Turley heat and size. Braised fruits, fairly resolved, some zin bramble. (602 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 6/25/2021 & rated 93 points: From memory. The mark of a really good wine: Each time I started to type this note, the flavor morphed. PnP. No detailed notes. Medium dense color and body; i.e., light for a Turley. Cranberry. Tart cherry. Anise. Spice. On the earthy side. Drinking well. (1576 views)
Tasted by alohaboys on 2/26/2021 flawed bottle: Corked :-( (1705 views)
Tasted by Callybrian on 12/1/2020 & rated 89 points: Honestly not getting much of a nose on this one, maybe a bit of alcohol burn. Palate comes off as very acidic and tangy. Alcoholic. Wil be good to pair with certain foods that need both Zinfandel boldness to compliment the course and a syrah's acidity to break it apart. I drank this with some tri-tip and it was a very good combination. (1823 views)
Tasted by bluedog on 10/9/2020 & rated 88 points: Sad. Past it’s prime. Entirely my fault. (1850 views)
Tasted by KO'Grady on 3/26/2020 & rated 88 points: Drank to late. (1546 views)
Tasted by Scott Shapiro on 7/13/2019 & rated 100 points: Good (1239 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 4/13/2019 & rated 93 points: Gorgeous perfume and violets (1167 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 2/24/2019 & rated 89 points: Drinking well at the moment, but I preferred the slightly more elegant 2011 Duarte bottling. This did have the Turley spice going on and was not over the top and porty like this bottling can be in hotter years. (1187 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 1/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Nice Zin (1180 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 12/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Had to update my notes. 60 second finish. Fantastic. (1176 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 12/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Ripe red fruit flavors of raspberry, cherry, great acidity, medium length finish. (928 views)
Tasted by ocfriday on 9/13/2018 & rated 89 points: Wonderful fruit - big berry front, weak finish. (1206 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 6/9/2018 & rated 93 points: PNP very smooth and still fruity (1335 views)
Tasted by levinml on 5/8/2018 & rated 91 points: Usual Turley flavors and drinkability. Don't remember much else. (1262 views)
Tasted by Roncanchola on 2/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Good still drank 2018 feb (1420 views)
Tasted by MDRwinos on 2/3/2018 & rated 89 points: Bigger, fruit forward Turley. Less spice than others. Still quite good. (1387 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 11/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this opaque red/garnet wine was decanted off of its substantial sediment and serially tasted over the ensuing three hours. Not revealing much during the first hour, it subsequently unfurls an impressive bouquet of black raspberries, lavender, orange zest and underbrush. Full-bodied, fresh, softly oaked and with gorgeous purity of fruit, it delivers a flavor payload mirroring the nose. I'm baffled at how this can be the case, but there is no heat from the wine's lofty 16.1% alcohol when served at the appropriate temperature of 60-65°F. Beautifully dense on the mid-palate and finishing long, this is a stellar Zinfandel that is in its sweet spot. At this point in its evolution, it is very important to decant it off of its sediment and give it plenty of aeration. Drink now-2020. (1720 views)
Tasted by silbakor on 8/8/2017 flawed bottle: corked. (1525 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 7/22/2017 & rated 94 points: Brought up to the lake house by Greg who's been on the Turley list for a while and this was one of the better bottles I have had the pleasure to share with him and Maureen. It grabbed me from the first sip, long, long finish with complex notes beyond the fruit. (1526 views)
Tasted by DavilaDC on 3/17/2017 & rated 88 points: Sweet red fruit mixed with the essence of black tea. It's become almost too sweet over time. Definitely need grilled or BBQ meat (something gamey) in order to cut this wine down to size. (1764 views)
Tasted by MDRwinos on 1/12/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP. Quite evolved, balanced (which is not always the case with Turley if you drink too young) bottle of juice. In a great place now. No reason to wait. (1777 views)
Tasted by wetlandwino on 11/13/2016 & rated 96 points: A superb Paso Robles Zin with excellent balance. No jam here, just a fine integration of fruit and acidity. Long silky finish. Drink now or in the next year. (1889 views)
Tasted by Old Gray Hare on 9/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Brambly, floral and a bit of pencil eraser on the nose. Immediate tangy burst of flavor with floral, spice (sage and thyme) & a bit of milk chocolate all evolving and not getting in each others way. Very little heat on a long smooth finish. Decanted about 30 min and did not notice marked improvement over the next 90 min or so. (1786 views)
Tasted by Salute on 9/24/2016 & rated 88 points: Wow this is very different from the bottle we had just last April. Something wrong here? The cork was fine, but the wine has absolutely no fruit, very dry, hot. Nose is a little stale, pretty good on the palate, long hot finish. Have two more bottles so we'll have to see how they go :-/ (1599 views)

2011 Turley Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard

Winemaker's Tasting Notes: It can occasionally be difficult to come up with unique tasting notes when tasting so many Zinfandels in one sitting (we know, we know, our lives are so hard). Thankfully, the Dusi makes our jobs a little easier; this wine is a standout. Aromas of wet earth and salinity bring to mind tromping through the vineyard just after the rain, a faint sea breeze in the air. Tart red fruits along with floral and lightly herbal notes join forces in this medium bodied beauty.

Dusi Vineyard

The head-pruned old vines of the Dusi Vineyard have come to define the intense bramble-berry flavors of Paso Zin. Planted in the calcareous soils of the West Side, these dry-farmed vines produce small quantities of fruit with dense concentration and wild spice. [Four Vines Wine Club, 1/2010]

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
