Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by J_H on 2/11/2022 & rated 88 points: - Nose: Medium + intense noses of strawberry, red plum and some mushroom, plus herbs, little secondary aromas and of vanilla and delicately incorporated wood. One notices the carbonic acid in the nose, probably from the filling from barrel to bottle (without pumping over).

- Palate: An easy drinking wine with high acidity and a lot of lightness, lean (medium - in body), medium tannins and a little less long in the finish (medium finish). It is not complex but already shows Roagna's style (wines with lightness and not a gram of fat, no sexiness) and is rather something for demanding drinkers. May not gain by further storage. 88 points. (757 views)
Tasted by jmw17 on 6/8/2020: Lovely integrated velvety sweetness with earthy funk. Likely could age a few more years. Awesome qpr. (935 views)
Tasted by Drizzt321 on 6/17/2017: Fresh opened has a delicious hint of spiciness with lovely fruit. Medium to medium-light, high acidity, moderate tannins but still has sufficient structure. Not tried with food. (2129 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 6/16/2017 & rated 90 points: First couple sips I wasn't a fan, but with food it grew on me. Low tannin, high acid. Very light viscosity. Meaty, some funk. OLD school. So different from Vietti. Meat, tobacco, smoke, tar, blackberry, herbs & liquorice. (2070 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 1/22/2017: This was super tight and closed initially. With about an hour of air it opened and revealed some lovely fruit on the nose with spice and fennel, and loads of mineral notes. The palate remained tight and unyielding throughout the evening. The acidity is super taut and there are more tannins than most dolcetto. Definitely an old school style and I think a little too young right now. I enjoyed this, but it is a wine for people who like classic old world styles. I suspect in 1-2 years it will show better. (2433 views)
 Tasted by dgg16 on 11/7/2016: Roagna, Dolcetto d'Alba 2014
Luca Roagna makes excellent, traditional, and natural wines in Piedmont. His Dolcetto is in the dense, leathery style and is perfect for brisket, bbq, or portobello mushrooms (2230 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 10/8/2016: Volatile, stinky nose on the first day. Not much Dolcetto character. After a night in the fridge: bright and clear fruit, the rotten notes are gone, spices and a nice, refreshing acidity. Still, the Veglio spells more Delcetto to me. This was even better on day 3 though. Interesting wine. (2130 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 6/27/2016: Nice, bright, bit of spice, touch of tannins. Simple and direct. Perfect pizza wine for sub $20 retail. Drink again in that context. (1310 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 3/4/2016 & rated 86 points: A very nice everyday red showing bright shiny blueberries with a blackcurrant leaf edge a bit of graphite and carbaceous minerals in the background. Enough grip to cleanse the palate but acidity is a bit flat, probably reflecting the vintage. (1182 views)
Tasted by fCOT on 1/22/2016 & rated 86 points: Disapointing vintage compared to 13' or 12' ! Very simple almost boring showing dark cherries and some mineral core. (1054 views)

Roagna

Producer website

Dolcetto

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Dolcetto, a northern Italian varietal from the Piedmont region, is a lighter bodied red. This wine is fruity and means 'little sweet one' in Italian. Some will opt to put a slight chill on it. Perfect with Mediterrean cuisine such as grilled meats and vegetables. Enjoy as a summertime delight. from (Woodward Canyon website)

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
