Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Loathesome on 12/31/2022 & rated 86 points: Good colour. Little nose and fruit a bit dried out and astringent. This never changed so rather think it has had its day if it ever did. 15% seems a bit bonkers do wonder how well balanced it was. having said that the acidity was not bad. (678 views)
Tasted by Dr_Bob on 8/18/2022 & rated 88 points: A bit post peak, very gnarly (976 views)
Tasted by le fouloir on 6/30/2019 & rated 91 points: My comments are similar to those I made in 2012. As one might expect, it is more evolved now, perhaps at its peak or slightly beyond, but still excellent. (2188 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 8/21/2017 & rated 89 points: youthful, fruity, bright, rich, crisp finish. (3036 views)
Tasted by El vino loco on 10/10/2016 flawed bottle: Past it's time. A little acidic. (3443 views)
Tasted by cfe on 4/24/2016 & rated 87 points: Decent, correct CDP. Shy aromatics. Palate is nicely integrated and balanced. Should keep for 3 more years. (3232 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 11/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Decanted off a modest sediment for 2 hours. Garnet rim, deep ruby center. This wine is old school CdP with more savory than fruit flavors. The anise and iodine stand out along with leather, meat, and underbrush. A suave finish, but not amazing. On plateau with 1-2 years left before tea leaves and dried fruit show up... (4107 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 8/13/2014 & rated 93 points: 14% alc; Mid garnet to orange rim. Classic aromas of garrigue, dried herbs and lavender alongside molasses, toffee with undergrowth and saddle leather typical of old CNP. A fairly penetrating nose and the palate is no different. Iodine, more furniture leather, dried herbs, with liquorice and black treacle going to burnt toffee. Firm textured, drying in the mid palate yet with some freshness and complexity. As the wine opens it evolves to chunks of hard brown sugar cubes, like a burnt marshmallow stick with a toffee lavender character edge. The tannins builds to a firm granularity yet the wine is long. Intriguing wine with the burnt black treacle that at time quite invasive balanced against quite fresh acidity. Challenging but enjoyable. (490 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 4/18/2014 & rated 89 points: Showing some serious bricking on the rim. Lighter plum brick robe and center. Pretty mature nose, plum, hoisin, fig, complex, but not long lasting. Medium bodied palate, still good dry tannins, medium acidity, nice cherry and plum fruit. Not a tonne of complexity on the palate, but overall this is a ncie mature CndP. (3531 views)
Tasted by Firefly78 on 5/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Consistent with previous review. (3404 views)
Tasted by moany rhoney on 4/20/2013 & rated 90 points: really enjoyable. Bright berryu fruit, touch oak, touch undergrowth. A balanced CNDP, not too sweet or extracted, but elegant and savory. (3118 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 2/16/2013 & rated 91 points: What a pleasant surprise. Wonderfully balanced with medium bodied weight. Nice cherry-like fruit with active tannins on the finish...but smooth, very smooth, almost delicate in nature. Quite nice. (3100 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 2/11/2013 & rated 92 points: Blackcurrant, olive, aniseed and leather on the nose. A fine and elegant texture with refreshing acidity give this a feeling of class, while perfectly pitched tannins hold it all together. Bags of flavour to enjoy in a neat, clean and distinguished parcel, this belies it's status as a 'cheap' CNdP. Tastings of other recent vintages suggest that this might be at its apex though. 92 points (2401 views)
Tasted by le fouloir on 10/27/2012 & rated 91 points: A pleasant surprise. Smooth, medium color, and a nicely balanced wine. Reasonably complex with typical CdP spices evident, but, overall, soft and feminine. Excellent price to value ratio. (2344 views)
Tasted by gout on 12/27/2011 & rated 89 points: Deep colour, still young so not much on the nose but has potential. Plenty of fruit & structure - keep further (2323 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 10/30/2010 & rated 90 points: I really liked this. There was a really good balance of sweet (but not jammy fruit), good acidity and nice complexity. Notes of garrigue, fig and hoisin sauce provided a layer over the raspberry and black cherry fruit. Drinking well now, but obviously has the stuffing to go quite a while longer. (2905 views)
Tasted by Kermadur on 7/13/2010: Dusty garnet color. A beautiful wine, rich and smooth with a lovelyly little spicy note. (2883 views)
Tasted by Lukeout on 1/30/2010 & rated 91 points: Forest floor and other earthy bits as well as a bit of spearmint. Not a fruit bomb, but some pretty intense fruit (rich, but not too heavy if that makes sense). Elegant and a wonderful change from all the super extract wines, without sacrificing nose or flavor. (1917 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 11/1/2009 & rated 92 points: Superb!, silky, fruity, bit of spice, intense red fruit, velvety tannins (occasionally a bit coarse), improved with air (1505 views)
Tasted by kain on 9/3/2009: Very nice. Bright fruit and no heat, well integrated tannins ready to drink now. Paired with a Morrocan spiced Brick Chicken and roasted potatoes. (3738 views)
Tasted by pbjosh on 5/25/2009 & rated 88 points: Nice wine, reasonably classically styled Chateauneuf and a great deal at $24. Sweet ripe (but shy of jammy) red fruits meld into pepper and a bit of garrigue. Some warm earth. Reasonably round and a bit spicy on the palate. This is not a blockbuster but should improve for a couple of years and drink well for 5 or so. (3076 views)
Tasted by cfe on 2/27/2009: might be shut down. This bottle had very shy armatics, compared to a prior bottle last early Fall that was aromatically lvely. Not flawed, just not much in the way of aromatics. Hold a while. (3098 views)
Tasted by jim dixon on 2/21/2009 & rated 91 points: Wonderful, complex nose of ??? baked beans, baking spices, fall foliage, some meat, and blood. Lots of garrigue on the palate - definitely not a fruit bomb. Sad that this is our last bottle. What a value. (2065 views)
Tasted by cfe on 12/25/2008: no detailed noets, but a very lovely complex lithe CDP. drinking well now, should last a while, at least 5 years. (3002 views)
Tasted by phancylad on 12/9/2008 & rated 91 points: Lighter style CdP, beautiful raspberries on the nose, very smooth integrated tannins. Great for the price. (2090 views)

(Bosquet CdP) Chateauneuf-du-Pape Dear Friends, If you are looking for a Chateauneuf-du-Pape bargain, this wine reflects a style that has become nearly extinct - one of elegance over impact. As with most examples by Bosquet des Papes, this continues to get better with bottle age and it now represents an excellent bargain. I’ve always been a fan of this style as it is true to its sense of origin without the burden of proving anything to anyone. Maybe this is why Jacques Reynaud thought this winery represented Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s most reasonably priced expression - high praise indeed. This is a classic case of the European palate versus the New World enthusiast and don’t let the medium body fool you - this wine can age for decades with grace and presence - it’s just not going to beat you over the head with extract and new wood. It is not a rough and tumble version of Chateauneuf, rather it is satiny and elegant with a velveteen, kirsch-dipped ball of Grenache waiting to unfold. At $35, it’s a good buy, at this price it’s one of the CdP bargains of the year: Take advantage of the 89pts - the wine is now $10/bottle less than it was a few months ago and it’s going to age in the same way if it received a 90. With the new-world order of a weak dollar, and Cotes du Rhone pushing $18 - enough said. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY - VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a style that has been lost on the young guns but what goes around comes around... This parcel has perfect provenance directly from the source: 2004 Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape (cuvee traditionnelle) FIRST COME FIRST SERVED at this price up to 6/person until we run out Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone7280

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
