Tasted by lesz on 4/14/2024 & rated 91 points: while pleasant it seemed a little lacking. Definite improvement with food. (653 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 4/9/2024 flawed bottle: Corked (621 views)
Tasted by matiasox@gmail.com on 3/22/2024 & rated 94 points: Very cool experience drinking this one. Pnp and drank within 2 hours. Nose: blackberries, licorice, plum liqueur, wet oak, there is some red licorice as well. Palate: plum, stewed strawberries and blackberry, licorice, cassis liqueur, vibrant, leather and pepper. Drinking great! Paired it with sliders. (821 views)
Tasted by ifishtoo on 3/7/2024 & rated 96 points: Outstanding. Just 2 left. (1057 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/21/2024 & rated 89 points: Tasting. Magnum. Rich and meaty while earthy. Not nearly as good as a recent bottle. Clean enough. (1446 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/10/2024 & rated 93 points: An exceptional bottle of this inconsistent wine. Rich, meaty, nicely fresh and persistent with real power. (1283 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 2/9/2024 & rated 92 points: This bottle had an unusual minty nose. Spice also on the nose. Rich and lingering but without some of the complexity that earlier bottles showed. Nevertheless, it was very enjoyable with roast pheasant! If you have this wine drink it now while it's still holding on... (1138 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 1/1/2024: 2024 New Year's Day Double Blind Tasting: Very similar to my tasting note back in November. This is drinking incredibly well despite the age. Really good! (1510 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 12/21/2023 & rated 92 points: This bottle was not quite up to the last one but was still delicious. Drink up! (1412 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Light red with pink edges. Distant barnyard, orange zest, thyme and plum nose. Dry earthy red berry and green herb flavours and a very dry finish.

For the first time this wine seems to be losing some of its intensity. The finish is very tannic and is losing some fruit. I think this may be on a very slow decline. A bottle in 2017 may have been at the very peak of Beaucastel mountain. (1539 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow. The cork was nasty, wet, and fell apart. Thanks to the Durand and a filter, I was able to get this into a decanter cleanly. Based on the opening of this bottle, I thought it would be dead. Yet, I was wrong. This was the best expression of old Beaucastel I have ever experienced. Fully mature, high toned red fruit, tart red raspberry, black olive, and a touch of balsamic vinegar. Incredible experience to tasting! (1705 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/10/2023 & rated 91 points: 3L. Young, good acidity, but somewhat lighter and simpler than expected. 91 (1871 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 9/25/2023 & rated 95 points: C'est du costaud ! Ah, c'est bon ! C'est bon ! (2289 views)
Tasted by Benczik on 9/23/2023 & rated 95 points: This bottle is still wonderful. Lots of fruit, blackberry black currant. Great bouquet. Thoroughly enjoyed over two hours with dinner and friends. Decanted for 3 hours before drinking. (1815 views)
Tasted by jimcopland on 9/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Fully mature, with tertiary notes. Tannins faded, beautiful fruits still present. Holding up nicely. (1975 views)
Tasted by ajrez on 7/15/2023 & rated 88 points: On the back end of its career… still some life but not much left. (2262 views)
Tasted by BradE on 7/4/2023: Outstanding bottle, and a pure joy to drink. (2368 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 6/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Paired with the '88. This was the better wine. Some Brett as expected...leather, meat notes. More fruit and structure than the '88. (1938 views)
Tasted by Raage on 4/21/2023 flawed bottle: (CDV)
(2633 views)
Tasted by topaz on 4/16/2023: Wine purchased on release and kept at 55*. Cork was solid, wine showed bricking and I decanted with lot's of sediment. Served with Rack of Lamb, one of the best Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines I have tasted in a long time. My last bottle, if you have any use them sooner than later. (2182 views)
Tasted by hargy on 4/12/2023 & rated 92 points: the cork was still intact as was the wine - I feel this is now in the twilight of its life - quite gentle, subtle and with just enough fruit - I would be inclined to drink any remaining bottles soonish (2015 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/12/2023: ESTG does Southern Rhone and Provence (Seattle, WA, USA): Surprisingly dark. We all struggled with this for a while, as there was a dirty note, seemingly not TCA, not oxidation, but not quite right. But with air this pushed through. So much dark fruit, so powerful, iron and blood. Stunningly powerful and young. (3108 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 1/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Popped and poured at a restaurant. Still kicking, and could have lasted for several more years had innit decided that this one needed to breathe. Wonderful experience. (2411 views)
Tasted by Eric on 1/6/2023 & rated 96 points: Quintessential Châteauneuf-du-Pape and textbook Beaucastel. The 1989 Beau can be frustratingly variable, but this one was a perfect example. Earthy and bretty in the Beau way, but at the same time, soaring, spicy, energetic, loaded with garrigue and pepper. And oh the sheer bloody, meaty, feral aspect of this, who makes CDP like that? It is so primal, so powerful and yet at age 33 surprisingly lithe and focused and precise.

With a really nicely braised short-rib, this was the absolutely perfect wine to match. Just perfect for the moment! (2650 views)
Tasted by #1 or #2? on 1/6/2023 & rated 96 points: has been over three years since our last one of these. …it’s a completely evolved wine and i would argue it has peaked and i cannot see improvement from here. colour is a light brick red and ever so slightly opaque with flecks of suspended sediment. ultra complex aromas of damp earth, herbs and florals, along with sour cherry, pepper, leather. the palate is very delicate and silky, savoury, sanguine and soy up front, with plum, red berries and orange rind in behind. it finishes long with a slightly sweet herbal note. stunning. Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
