Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 40 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kenv on 11/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Opened for Thanksgiving, but it is too sweet to go with dinner. Saved it for dessert or just sipping. Honeyed botrytis nose. Still quite sweet and tart. I don't think this will ever fully resolve. (1741 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 3/7/2020: Pale gold. Medium sweet. Citrus lemon. Peach and apple. Honey. Finish of minerals. A special zing I can’t place, this is my first aged Riesling, could this be the petrol I hear about? Delicious. (1743 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 3/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Clear, deep gold in color, medium legs. Orchard fruits on the nose, apple, goose berry, some honey and a hint of petrol. Medium sweet but bright and refreshing with high acidity on the palate. It has a medium plus body with good viscosity, very juicy, mouthwatering. Flavors of apple peel, baking spice, brown sugar, and nectarine. Finish is dry and longer than medium. This is great riesling. It's very alive and will live for at least another decade. (1905 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 12/7/2018 & rated 92 points: pale gold; bright peach, harmonious fruit/acid balance, sweetness integrated, accented by food; delicious tonight. seems to be within its optimal range.

spicy pork rib fried rice w/bok choi & young ginger (1920 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 6/1/2018: Consumed over two nights, this showed more brightness and freshness on night two, so there is still plenty of time to go. Ripe peach, subtle red fruit tones, light honey, apple skin, touches of brown spice and seamless balance made for a complete experience. It felt a touch heavy on the first night, but that completely went away on night two where the peach got fresher and the honey retreated. Ready to go now with some significant air, but no hurry to finish well stored bottles. (2521 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 1/3/2018 & rated 94 points: Deep golden color is showing maturity. This is confirmed upon tasting. Unsweetened baked apple sauce and crumbly earth on the nose. Mouthwatering - the acidity mixed with pure, complex fruit just calls for another sip. This is a great bottle of Riesling. I can definitely see the strawberry notes that David S mentions.  Tasted by MRichman on 8/30/2017: Beautiful. Semi sweet, great balance. Drinking great, no rush. Excellent. (1500 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/1/2016 & rated 93 points: HDH Burgundy Auction; 4/1/2016-4/2/2016 (Chicago, IL): #06-02, 9% abv. Slight hint of petrol on the nose, with some stone fruit and green herbs as well. The palate shows a lot of the same petrol and stone notes, with a bit of white cherry, lemongrass, and sweet citrus. Moderately sweet, with awesome acidity, this is in a very nice spot. A bit soft on the palate, I have a little trouble imagining what this becomes with more age (but perhaps that's a shortcoming of my own imagination more than this wine). Delicious now though.  Tasted by KeithAkers on 4/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Nose: The nose is aromatic and balanced with peaches, red apples, some petrol, apricots, floral tones, and a bit of honey. This is showing maturity, but there is still a good amount of vibrancy to the fruit.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. There is excellent depth and balance with the acidity showing a refreshing quality. There is a honeyed quality to the tones of peaches, red apples, apricots, florals, and some caramel tones.

Overall: This is a lovely, mature Spatlese. There is still a good amount of freshness to the tones, but with a depth, balance, and refinement to it all. This is drinking beautifully right now and can sail along for a while longer. (1401 views)
Tasted by CloserIam2Wine on 5/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Consistent to other recent reviews. Going to be difficult to keep my hands off the three bottles remaining, but I'd really like to track the development in 5, 10 & 15 years. (3442 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 3/8/2014 & rated 91 points: Bright, fruity and still youthful, the 2001 Kirschheck is slimming down and showing greater minerality. The finish is just off dry, and very persistent. (3459 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 3/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Biryani @ Salil's (Vernon, CT): Beautiful and youthful; not showing much in terms of secondary flavors, but perhaps shedding some of its sweetness. Bright, juicy and chiseled. (3781 views)
Tasted by salil on 3/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Pretty much what Rieslingfan and mdefreitas said. Still quite youthful with lots of bright fruit and time ahead of it, very elegant, and all too easy to drink. (3861 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 3/2/2014 & rated 93 points: Light golden color. Sweet-smelling stone fruit nose. The palate's density is special; moderate sweetness is complemented by mouth-watering acidity and secondary notes of candied orange peels. (2336 views)
Tasted by nav2u on 11/28/2013 & rated 94 points: Vivid gold. Stewed lemons, wilted flowers, and petrol on the nose. Voluptuous on the palate, with notes of lemons, melons, and flowers against scintillating acidity. Sensational. (1526 views)
Tasted by kenv on 6/28/2013: NK Arrivederla Liz Nicholson (Maialino Restaurant, NYC): Seems too sweet coming after the Champagne. Not rated. (2082 views)
Tasted by salil on 3/12/2013 & rated 94 points: Pretty much what Rieslingfan said (same bottle, visited a day later), classic Norheimer Kirschheck cherry and mineral flavours, but with the voltage turned way up. The sense of vibrancy and energy here is really something. Absolutely fantastic wine. (2176 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 3/11/2013: Checking in on this wine at age 12, and it's a thrilling experience. Vibrant fruit and electric acidity dominate, bringing an intensity that recalls the vintage. This particular bottle showed almost no maturing characteristics, so based on a one bottle sample it would seem that there is a long future ahead for the wine.

Simply amazing Riesling. (1990 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/22/2012 & rated 93 points: Light medium chartreuse color; appealing, marinated green herbs, petrol, tart peach nose; tasty, mature, tart peach, peach syrup, mineral, nectarine palate; medium-plus finish (894 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 6/20/2012 & rated 89 points: Deep. Yellow. Apples and lemon in the nose. Good balance of acid and fruit, lots of life. Full, rich and long. Seems rather primary for such an old German. 4-12-16-7: 89/100. (2401 views)
Tasted by salil on 5/7/2012 & rated 92 points: Youthful white cherry and peachy fruit augmented by more developed smoky, burnished and creamy flavour elements in a medium weight whole with bright acidity underneath keeping it very precise and bright. Great balance and depth and drinking very well now, though the fruit and acidity suggests there's still some time ahead of this. (2403 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 5/7/2012 & rated 92 points: Gold; Somewhat reserved but complex nose of citrus, stone fruit, and some tropical fruit. Palate is beginning to develop beautiful nuance while preserving the tangy, green-apple acidity. Very nice. (2413 views)
Tasted by dekay on 12/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Very clean, balanced riesling with a bit of crispness and fruit aromatic complexity (peach, pineapple, lime). Could use a bit more minerality for structure. (2186 views)
Tasted by Remony on 10/2/2011 & rated 92 points: (AP 06 02) On the terrace at the end of a gorgeous Indian Summer, with Martin & Diana Penny. First of six recently purchased from Bentleys of Ludlow. Hazel colour, fresh rounded nose, delicious moderately complex palate. To be sipped and savoured - a perfect aperitif. Very well balanced. After a day, it acquires more complexity, with notes of peach and hazelnut, and excellent acidity. (2194 views)
Tasted by Rani on 6/18/2011 & rated 93 points: Szechuan feast with (mostly) Rieslings (Chez moi): Donnhoff delivers again (does he ever miss?) with a great nose of quince, pineapple and a slight hint of petrol. The elegant, racy acidity is in perfect balance with the minerals and sweetness, which is at what you would expect from a Spatlese. Still young, but this is one six-pack I completely rushed through. Delectable. (2664 views)

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
