Tasted by dthrash111 on 6/8/2023 & rated 91 points: I’ve had this wine several times over the past decade and I really enjoy it. The Mailbox Vineyard is a high quality wine at a reasonable price point, and it ages really well. I would have rated this 94 points a few years ago, but dropping to a 91 now as the fruit is starting to fade out while the tannins are still firm. Drink NOW! (275 views)
Tasted by TallMikeWine on 9/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Still chugging along at 15! Although it seems to have lost a very small amount of fruit. Still lovely BIG wine from high elevation vines. Blue and black fruit, baking spice, menthol towards the end. A wonderful companion at this stage, but I'd drink up now, or very soon. (439 views)
Tasted by Winegeek83 on 1/5/2019 & rated 94 points: What a great bottle of wine! Still very much alive and structured with beautiful ripe blue and black fruit, tobacco, hints of espresso and eucalyptus. Very fine integrated tannins left a silky mouthfeel as well. As it opened, the coffee note burned off and I got more pronounced blueberry liqueur and tobacco notes. Reminded me of their Cabernet. Definitely a cab drinker’s merlot, as are most Spring Mountain merlots. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this hang on for another 5 to 10 years. Enjoy! (1031 views)
Tasted by SLR204 on 12/2/2017 & rated 93 points: 2hr decant needed. Dark fruit flavors, black licorice. Silky smooth. Delicious. (1443 views)
Tasted by Reblin on 11/18/2017 & rated 92 points: Nicely aged. Full, round fruit but smooth. (1285 views)
Tasted by pjbeans on 3/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Great example of "mountain fruit" merlot. Aging nicely, still has stuffing to go a few more years, this is a big wine (1931 views)
Tasted by nfafoglia on 12/13/2015 flawed bottle: Corked! (2108 views)
Tasted by kbhiggins on 7/10/2014 & rated 92 points: Thought this was fantastic. Nice spiciness on the nose gives way to chocolate creaminess on the body. Long finish leaves you wanting for more. Still a lot of life left in this. (2757 views)
Tasted by jovino on 6/7/2014 & rated 92 points: Terrific nose on pnp. Gave 90 minutes in the decanter and it delivered everything you'd want from a Napa merlot. Rich, but not over the top. I'm a fan. (2545 views)
Tasted by slmral on 1/9/2014 & rated 93 points: First Thursday Main Group - Merlots of the World: My 5th place, but the groups 2nd, out of 9 (3587 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 8/17/2013 & rated 93 points: Opened up nicely. Eucalyptus and some menthol on the nose, along with the deep black fruit. On the pallet the things were rich and concentrated with a nice right bank flavor (minus the slight extractedness, I guess.) first Keenan, and very impressed with this bottle. (2471 views)
Tasted by rerail84 on 4/9/2012: Kind of shut down. After decanting for 3 hours this wine really opened up. Great aroma of spice, lavender, and a bit of eucalyptus. The palate is smooth and quite balanced. Finish is long and elegant. What a great wine. This will definitely improve over the next 5 or so years. (4120 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Premier Napa Valley Vintage Perspective Tasting Part II: Merlots 2007-2009 (Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies, CIA Greystone, St. Helena, California): Medium dark ruby color; lifted, ripe berry, sweet black fruit nose; tasty, ripe berry, mulberry, black fruit palate; medium-plus finish 91+ points (20 mos. in French oak; 14.3% alcohol) (2308 views)
Tasted by bdufton on 2/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Beautiful, straight up Merlot with a great edge and plenty of backbone. Nothing flabby here - dark, a bit floral maybe, lovely finish. Agree with Richard Jennings - "rich but poised". (3332 views)
Tasted by sjdcellar on 1/23/2012 & rated 85 points: this was a bit light - not the usual full bodied spring mountain merlot as per Pride or Paloma. Fell apart at the edges (3041 views)
Tasted by dynowine on 10/1/2011 & rated 91 points: Well, take that, Paul Giamatti. Merlot rules again. Tested on well-aired bottle, 3+ hrs. Well-integrated aroma with sweet dusty floral, dark fruit, hints of salty mineral. In the mouth a warm spicy burst of smooth rich dark fruit overlaying lower notes of chocolate, coffee that all move into a warm finish. Merlot. 14.3% abv. Body medium plus, acid medium, tannin medium. Delicious but getting pricey at USD 48. (3622 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 8/21/2011 & rated 91 points: Family Winemakers. Nose of currants, cherry preserves, and dust, more of the same on the palate, medium/big body, and long finish with a pleasant aftertaste. (561 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/31/2011 & rated 92 points: Joseph George 71st Anniversary Tasting (Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, California): Dark ruby color; lovely, ripe plum, berry, ripe currant nose; tasty, rich but poised, ripe currant, plum palate; medium-plus finish 92+ points (2922 views)
Tasted by Dasher on 5/23/2011 & rated 92 points: This wine needs about 2 years and it will be awesome. It is a good drinking wine. (2794 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
