Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wabi47 on 12/3/2023 & rated 90 points: good deep mixed berry and earth; tannins integrated; a bit of cedar; this has aged well (389 views)
Tasted by caseychesterfield@gmail.com on 2/8/2023: age didn't help much with tannins (671 views)
Tasted by jpkelleher1 on 4/6/2022 & rated 93 points: Fantastic long finish (1091 views)
Tasted by seanucsb on 12/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Near black center to a ruby/brick edge. Blueberry cobbler, old leather baseball glove and redwood forest floor. Some touches of smoke and soy. Umami! The tannins here have started to settle and the wine is smooth as glass. Hides the 15.2% well. Didn't seem hot at all. Drinking well now. For me this is likely at peak but could continue to develop the secondary framework (1687 views)
Tasted by Rayburn on 11/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Cork was crumbling when we took it out and had to be pushed into bottle, the wine was strained and decanted for about 45 minutes before tasting. The color is inky purple with a ruby rim. Nose juicy blackberry, licorice, black pepper, little bit of oak. Palate is full, rich and deep, with tannins that have softened but are in evidence. The backbone on this wine is big and strong. The finish is easily two minutes without being drying. (1745 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 2/3/2020 & rated 94 points: Served to accompany venison casserole. Decanted 2 hours before tasting. No sediment. This is a real treat, an excellent example of a petite sirah. Perfectly mature at the moment. The colour is dark maroon. The nose is sublime, a rich sweetness showing through with dark berry fruit. The palate is dry, full bodied, rich. really smooth. It just slipped down and complemented the venison so well. Wonderful! And, perhaps unusually, just as good as when I tasted it in the winery. (2067 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/8/2020: Another Year, Another Napa (aka Winter in Wineland IV); 1/5/2020-1/11/2020 (Napa/Sonoma California): Really nice and peppery. Good red fruits. It's hard to tell that there's really any age on this. Still comes across as quite young. Drinks well with many years to go. (2741 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 9/29/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted at the winery. This was served at the end of a great tasting and it was good to be able to taste a Ridge with 10 years since the vintage. Dark plum colour. Heavenly nose and palate, dark woodland, sloes, earthy, all the characteristic one would expect after 10 years. This is definitely my style, so I bought some and look forward to trying them at home. (1704 views)
Tasted by jgreco on 8/15/2019 & rated 93 points: The 2009 Ridge Lytton Estate Petit Sirah hits you with an impenetrable wall of tannins initially. After an hour of air though, it settled down nicely with dark fruits, licorice, tobacco, and grilled meat flavors. Fine gained sandy tannins that are typical of Petite Sirah. You should be in no rush to pop this. (1541 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 3/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Needed some time in the glass after PnP. I think this has tons of life left. Deep and dark with notes of chocolate and dark red fruit. (1617 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 4/8/2018 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Inky purple color. Rich, deep aromas of cassis, bramble, and menthol. Changing mix of flavors includes cassis, tobacco, cherry, among others. Licorice finish. Ready to go straight out of the bottle, but opening further with air. Classic. (1842 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 4/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Double decanted 1-1/2hrs. Black center to deep purple edge. A bit of funk initially that blew off quickly. Tightly wound. Not giving up much in the glass for 1-1/2. It started to open up with black fruits (blackberry and currents) and a light perfume. Well balanced with a bit of tannin. Med finish. These should see a lot of air on opening or rest for many more years. (2543 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/25/2017 & rated 92 points: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Opaque inky color. Aromas of vanilla, brown sugar and black fruit with toasty, oaky overtones. Flavors of blackberry, cassis and vanilla. Guessed petite. (2951 views)
 Tasted by H2CO3 on 12/22/2016: H 3 (2573 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 5/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Very dark purple to the edge. Decanted 2-1/2 hrs. Tannic and hard on opening. After a few hours nose of brambly blackberry and black currents. Some wood and a light perfume. Still tannic but balanced the fruit nicely. Same blackberry and currents. Reminded me a little of a good "mountain" cab. Medium to long finish. Drinking well now but long life ahead. (3170 views)
Tasted by dchisholm on 4/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Nose of blackberry, tar, chocolate, stews prunes. Taste of tar, blackberry and chocolate. Served with buffalo pie, rice and green beans. A balanced, smooth wine with very gentle tannins with deep black fruit flavours. Have to go back to Lytton Springs to buy another bottle. (3399 views)
Tasted by missionpk on 3/2/2015 & rated 91 points: Big. Lots of fruit. Lots of tannins. Reasonable acidity. Better after several days than on first opening. Long life ahead. (3291 views)
Tasted by blabbott on 4/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Black pepper nose and flavors of spice, dark fruit and pepper. The flavors are good, but seems just a bit thin. There are really great tannins, at least "she" thinks so. (4481 views)
Tasted by Burgessdpilot on 2/8/2014 & rated 89 points: Much better. Tanins settling down. Shows promise. Could be quite nice in another year. (4355 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 1/1/2014 & rated 90 points: ABV 15.2; deep earth and barrel nose; dirt, deep primary mixed dark fruit with some sweetness as well, prominent tannins; big and primary with good typicity; didn't really notice any heat; i liked it, but marilyn likened it to a barrel sample. worked with pizza but didn't really complement the food; ultimately polished off with cheese and nuts; seems to need plenty of time. (3957 views)
Tasted by Burgessdpilot on 10/20/2013: Ugg. All tanins, little fruit left. Not sure why I am in such disagreement with community, but my bottle was poor. Not corked. Maybe it will tenderize some steaks. Don't want to dilute point avg, so only posting note. Usually very happy with Ridge wines. (3790 views)
Tasted by kosinski on 10/4/2013: Nose: loam and mushroom with hints of roasted meat
Palate: spicy and rather tannic with woody notes and just a hint of red berry. Needs time. (3425 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 7/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, big and hearty style, chalky tannins, but smooth and balanced. (3266 views)
Tasted by joannevicious on 12/11/2012 & rated 89 points: Opened direct from the wine fridge (>60F). Ran through Vinturi.
Nose: heat with suggestions of smooth dark fruit
Mouth: Smooth and velvety mouthfeel
Palate: disjointed dark fruit, cocoa, hints of spice
Overall: this is young, but not as infanticidal as I had anticipated. (3660 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 11/24/2012 & rated 89 points: Thought I'd like this more but it's emphasis on smoky earthy coffee notes lacked supporting luscious fruit which otherwise would have made this amazing. 15.2% alcohol and while it doesn't come off as "hot" necessarily it does come off as a bit of a brooding nearly gothic wine. Update after a couple days: This held up well under stopper. Think it will be better with age. (3772 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Ridge Petite Sirah Lytton Estate

The oldest Petite Sirah vines at Lytton Estate were planted in 1901 and the youngest in 2008. Previously released as special bottlings, this is now in its 10th vintage as a standalone cuvee, selected from small lots that would normally be a component of Lytton Springs.

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
