Tasted by bugdoced on 11/26/2023 & rated 94 points: a spectacular effort in this beautifully evolved bottle
initial coffee dark aged fruit evolved in 30 minutes to an integrated lengthy elegance
went well with all the dishes at mfk but especially with the roasted snapper (644 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 7/9/2022 & rated 95 points: Deep dark red, very dark core.
Intense dark berry with a rich spicy herbaceous note.
Strong briary cassis flavours, blueberry and sherbet, intense but well balanced, seems incredibly young, red and black berries, ink and tar spice, licorice, charcoal, a little ferrous character. Slippery smooth, excellent acidity, fine but gripping tannins. Needs a decade to open up properly. Awesome. (1650 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 6/24/2022 & rated 94 points: WOTN 🏆 Wine of the Night.. even in exalted company such as Unico Especial and the Ygay.. beautiful aged Valbuena, with such precision, complexity and it kept evolving through the night too.

Beautiful candied cherry nose, with intoxicating natural sweetness and quite remarkable.

Powerful with super fine tannins, Oak and vanilla roundness and finish.

Thanks to @Joe Yee Wong for storing this so carefully over so many years, and letting us 5 share it together on the night of Spanish giant wines, at Pinchos in KL.

Tasted by Pinot Peter on 1/30/2022: Excellent!!! I won't add to the copious notes already on the site that adequately describe the flavours of this wine. Slight tannic dryness and oak taste at the back of the palate. Drinking well...can age for much longer. Shows Great balance and hides it's 14.5% alcohol well.
Wish I had more. (1888 views)
Tasted by Oliverl1 on 1/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Classic, classic Ribera! Possibly the best I have ever had. Really needs a good decant, minimum 4 hours. This will go on for another 10+years. Lovely stuff! (1885 views)
Tasted by VegaSicilia1970 on 12/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Opened for Christmas Day dinner. Nose was good. But so tight. Never opened up fully even after decanting for 5 hrs. Felt either a bit disappointing that it just doesn’t have the stuff or that it really needs more time. A lot more time. (1615 views)
Tasted by #1 or #2? on 10/30/2021 & rated 94 points: another treat from uncle victor’s stash... and what a treat it was. big, dark and beautiful. nose of dark berry fruit intertwined with earthy, woody, floral and smoky aromas. palate was balanced and nuanced with good fruit up front and some tasty mineral and herbal flavours on the back end with structure and tannin on the long finish. highly recommended. (tasted blind alongside an 06 tua rita giusto di notri). 94+ (1193 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 10/24/2021 & rated 94 points: PNP at Clos Madrid
Balanced beautiful albeit slightly tannic
Cherry, blackberry and guava.
Hour 2 it opened up and some of the tannic bite diminished (1145 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 5/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Very dark crimson color; full bodied. Poured first glass through Venturi, and decanted the rest. Blackberry, black cherry, violets and a hint of spice. Luscious; tannins seem reasonably integrated to me. Fine with cheese, but a mistake to pair it with chimchurri marinaded steak: too much spice in the food, which obscured the wine. Chocolates at dessert redeemed the pairings. (1387 views)
Tasted by Drewster1705 on 1/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Perfect - still some fruit but very integrated with tannins. (1629 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 9/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted one hour before dinner. Delicious black fruit, but I didn’t sense any of the subtleties that others have. Might have been the pairing: grilled lamb in a Mexican chilies marinade (but we started on this bottle before sitting down to dinner. Happily, tannins well-integrated. (1923 views)
Tasted by jozishosh on 9/4/2020 & rated 95 points: Perfect. Opaque ruby color. On the nose dryied plum, leather, earth and much more. On the palate excellent balance between medium acidity and medium tannins. Full body, Very long finish. Best Ribbera Del Duero I've tasted. (1708 views)
Tasted by the player on 4/23/2020 & rated 93 points: Slightly less complex than its older sibling the Vega Sicilia Unico. Could do with 5 to 10 years of additional cellaring to shed some of its powerful tannins. Blackish crimson color, youthful to the eye. Nose of blackberries, blueberries, spice cake, plums and cherries. Powerful on the palate, with tannins quite present and needing 2 to 3 hours in decanter to resolve. Long finish, great acidity and structure, built to last and fashioned along the same lines of the Unico. Hedonistic and opulent and more fruit forward than the Unico. (2251 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 3/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Vega Sicilia Valbuena Vertical (Bob's, Lincoln Park): Nose: The nose is deep and intense, filled with black cherries, black raspberries, tobacco, licorice, violets, leather, coconuts, liqueur, and some earth notes. There is good harmony at this time with the fruit still showing a lot of primary qualities.

Taste: The feel is full bodied with chewy, high tannins. The tannins are starting to round out more, though I wouldn't say they are resolved. The feel is larger, yet balanced with black cherries, black raspberries, tobacco, licorice, violets, liqueur, and leather notes.

Overall: This is starting to come into its own. It is an intense, but balanced wine that shows off a lot of black fruits. This is ready to go right now with a decant and it can certainly age for at least another 5-8+ years. (1629 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 2/17/2020 & rated 93 points: Knightsbridge Round table tasting-Vega Sicilia and friends (Knightsbridge, Northbrook IL): Nose: The nose is deep and intense with black cherries, raspberries, leather notes, blackberries, herbs, spice tones, licorice, smoke, earth notes, and violets.

Taste: The feel is full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy, high tannins. There is a robust quality to the feel with good depth that is backed up with black cherries, raspberries, leather notes, licorice, violets, earth, and some smoke.

Overall: This is drinking beautifully right now. It was just a small pour but it had seen some air before I got to it. There is good intensity to the nose and palate along with excellent depth. This feels like it's starting to be right in its window. (1222 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/17/2020: Vega Sicilia Unico...and Related Wines (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Tasting, brief note. Opened, double decanted an hour earlier. Mature black fruit and spice aromas. Flavors were less exciting with more earth and dirt. Time to drink up. (2334 views)
Tasted by Alvarovazquez on 1/23/2020 flawed bottle: Flawed, it’s a shame considering it was just 14 years since harvest and cork looked good. Bought it as a part of a vertical set 2006-2011. After this experience, Coravined the 2007 bottle and found it in perfect conditions. Strange, considering Vega Sicilia standards. (1610 views)
Tasted by martin_e on 11/12/2019 & rated 91 points: Opulent racy wine with silky, but noticeable tannins. On the palate: red plumb, black cherry, blackberry and some raisin. This "raisin" note made it less interesting in my opinion. It's nice and fruity, but not as complex and balanced as the 2008 vintage of Valbuena (1870 views)
Tasted by Stefan75 on 7/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Last wine of the night after 4 Bdx, strong showing - both structured and appealing, would have profited from some more air I guess (2358 views)
Tasted by Stwstw on 4/4/2019 & rated 92 points: Drukket med Karina
Bør være min. 15 år før de drikkes (2442 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 10/17/2018 & rated 94 points: this wine deliver all you want from a VS. great wine! (2918 views)
Tasted by HKNick on 10/12/2018 & rated 93 points: Part of our Spanish wine dinner. Preferred over 09 Valbuena but pipped by 03 Unico. Needed 1.5h decant to open up. Medium body with ripe cherry but not as ripe as 09. Secondary notes apparent with air. (2815 views)
(2603 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 4/24/2018: Very hot vintage, picked early
deep colour, looks so young
Fresh floral nose, sweet notes, heady
Creamy texture, nutty and round like Southern Rhone
Tannins a little drying and dusty but no dried fruit, fruit preistine, warm finish
Hot and rustic and delicious (3497 views)
Tasted by Lewerentz on 4/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Well balanced, drinks good now. Just opened up and waited an hour. 92-93p (2861 views)

Bodegas Vega-Sicilia

Producer Website

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
