Tasted by Senso-beak on 12/29/2023 & rated 88 points: Opened and served. Very dark with slight bricking. Full bodied, big wine. This bottle showing more maturity, smooth and inky and more blue fruit dominated. A little less sweetness, more purple velvet. A little graphite, and a touch of anise on the nose as well. Coming off a cold so this note might be slightly affected. (390 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 10/24/2023 & rated 91 points: Opened and poured from recent auction purchase. Wow, such a nice wine and QPR....love the '97s. A little barn funk on the nose. A little bricking to dark red/purple. Purple and chewy palate - this is lively and dense and tons of plum, blacks, with some cedar/licorice starting to show right upon open. Day two under vac-u-vin, the barn element is gone, and this is much darker and fuller - black, briar, tea leaf, very well integrated tannins. The sweetness is mostly resolved, leaving a full bodies dark profile that's quite enjoyable. (508 views)
Tasted by invein on 12/16/2022 & rated 90 points: Amazingly balanced red fruit. Pleasant earthy age to it. No tannins left. Faded after a couple hours though. (958 views)
Tasted by Thurashe on 1/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Was fantastic (1612 views)
Tasted by Neri305 on 5/6/2020 & rated 86 points: Decanted and let open up for 30 minutes. A little last it’s prime. Color is still vibrant. Nice old barrel taste. (2747 views)
Tasted by OlliAPH on 7/23/2019 & rated 91 points: My brother-in-law brought this rare excellent individual to our dinner table tonight. What an experience! (2938 views)
Tasted by sung251 on 6/4/2019: The wine came off as very extracted, tons of dark fruits, vanilla, oak with still formidable tannins. I was expecting a wine that would be pretty subtle considering its age but instead came off as a primary monolithic brut. People who enjoy Californian style I guess would enjoy this but not my cup of tea. Drank this at a byob steakhouse with my parents. (2844 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 5/11/2019 & rated 86 points: No obvious issues, but I really don't care for this style. Pours very dark with virtually zero bricking. The nose is fairly undeveloped and mostly primary. A powerful and clearly extracted style. The nose is of blackberry jam, raisin, twigs, tree bark, and dry wood. The palate has bitter tannin, and massively extracted dark fruit. (3354 views)
Tasted by Ara Kafafian on 3/31/2019 & rated 94 points: I have several problems with this wine. First, why is it every time I have this wine blind I guess it's 20 years younger? Second, Why is it that I am unable to keep older Knight's Valley in my cellar? Third, Why is it that I only buy 2 bottles whenever a new vintage is released instead of buying 2 cases? Year in, year out, one of the most consistent and well produced wine from Sonoma and in this particular vintage, it's just a monster (2507 views)
Tasted by Arturoonwine on 12/23/2018 & rated 93 points: I agree with cos65, but am NOT surprised. These Ed Sbragia bargain cabs, are all wonderful at 20 years of age! What a winemaker and, in this instance, what a wine! So fresh, with gorgeous balance, dark cherry and cassis; the wine just shimmers down your throat. This is a gorgeous wine by ANY standard. Time to drink it but will hold another year or two. (1781 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 8/17/2018: Quite a lovely surprise.
Still fairly deep ruby purple.
Bright red fruited,
Lovely balance and rather perfect right now
A nice surprise.
This was cellared since release; I can’t imagine holding up this well for much longer. I’d try it now if you have some left. (1613 views)
Tasted by junetoaugust on 4/29/2018 & rated 90 points: The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), medium toast, tobacco and vanilla. It tastes like light toast, vanilla and tobacco. The body is medium. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (1876 views)
Tasted by Krlinv on 10/21/2017: Despite age, still good fruit. Decant for an hour before drinking. (2363 views)
Tasted by Eric.S on 7/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Held up better than expected and fun to drink. Old world aspects such as tobacco, herbs, leather. Red fruited, somewhat short finish. Best right after open, faded after a couple hours. (2508 views)
Tasted by Neilrothmd on 5/7/2017 & rated 90 points: Still had nice full bodied taste. Some of the fruit gone but enjoyed it (2597 views)
Tasted by erichohim on 2/21/2016 & rated 92 points: decanted for 30 mins before drinking
fruity , cherry strawberry
tasted like french wine
loved it (3796 views)
Tasted by sthugo on 12/31/2015: As per previous note last year, very savoury with little or no fruit left. A lovely old bottle of aged Napa cabernet which in all honesty probably has seen better days but enjoyable none the less. Medium to long finish of ultra-fine tannins. Based on this bottle it is time to drink up. (3795 views)
Tasted by JerryRoy on 7/4/2015 & rated 94 points: great wine many spices and flavors (3799 views)
Tasted by sthugo on 12/24/2014 & rated 92 points: Deep garnet in colour. Very savoury nose with notes of subtle spices and tobacco. Palate is very approachable, savoury with dark stone fruits and spice. Very elegant wine with a medium to long subtle finish. As per other notes, the fruit is fading so would recommend to drink this within the next year or so. For $20 and plenty of patience, this is bang for your buck Knights Valley cabernet. Well done Beringer! (4077 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 10/3/2014 & rated 88 points: Tasted double-blind, this deep garnet/amber wine offers aromas of sassafras, chocolate, pipe tobacco and red plum. On the palate, it is full-bodied, has medium acidity, seamless alcohol (13.9%) and melted tannins. The flavors mirror the nose and the middle palate is solid. Concluding tart and with medium length, this 17-year-old Cabernet is still pleasant to drink. That said, it would best be consumed within the next year or two (as the fruit is waning). Drink now-2016. (4417 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 9/27/2014: Plenty of dark fruit, midweight, resolved tannins, cocoa. Easygoing. Not complex, but tasty. B (3084 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 3/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Dark purple little fruit on the nose but earthy and leather. Tasted minerals coffee no tannin. Well balenced wish I had bought more a decade or so ago. (3548 views)
Tasted by Wineio on 3/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Big nose of berry fruit and more. Medium tannin and soft fruit flavors. In general soft subtle, maybe a bit too old. Still very good (3045 views)
Tasted by ceb1964 on 12/25/2013 & rated 89 points: Rolled the dice and opened a 3L bottle for Christmas dinner and expected to be pouring it down the drain - wow, was I surprised. Still very drinkable with nice fruit. (2986 views)
Tasted by Jrvaught406 on 5/26/2013: Still held up well, might have been better a couple, of years earlier, but still very drinkable. (3612 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
