Tasted by Rieslingfan on 4/7/2024: Not sure how I managed to do this…again. Opening a bottle on the anniversary of the last time I opened the same wine. The bottle on Friday was just thrown off 1 day due to leap year. This one hit the mark, exactly six years to the day from the prior bottle. I swear I don’t check.

Anyway, this is approaching maturity. There is still plenty of dark berry and cassis fruit, but also an earthy/smoky overtone that is developing on the nose. Tannins are softening, such that another 3-5 years might have this in a prime drinking window. That said it’s not so bad tonight, and I may not be able to wait until April 7, 2030. (324 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 10/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Everything is in place for this 13 year old wine. Gorgeous color with a wonderful balance of softly muted fruit, acid, and resolved tannins. Stored for the past 5 years in 59-66 degree temperatures, the cork was in perfect shape with plenty of life left however now may be at its peak. Had with bone-in ribeye, sauteed cauliflower and mushrooms and mashed potatoes. With Alex and Mom. (629 views)
Tasted by BillyRayValentine on 3/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Well balanced classic CA cab. Fruit and earth and tannin and acid perfectly integrated over 13 years. Should continue to peak for at least a few more, but no reason to wait. Paired well with NY Strip and Jackson’s fondant potatoes. (1077 views)
Tasted by johnnygrapes on 12/30/2022: Unfortunately bottle was corked (1208 views)
Tasted by Montyaloofah on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: still delicious. limited time left (1204 views)
Tasted by Biffrutt on 7/29/2022 & rated 93 points: We have drunk Heitz cab in the past and had not been impressed. This bottle of 2010 was really outstanding. The color was dark and rich, and the legs were seemingly endless. there were hints of cherry and blackberry, and went very well with our grilled lamb chops. (1450 views)
Tasted by nicholasagonzales on 7/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Needs to be decanted for a long period of time. I made the mistake of only decanting for about 45 minutes before the first glass. The wine changed over the course of the evening when drinking. At the start, it was very acidic, but opened so lovely. Dark fruits are aboundent. An excellent wine. (1198 views)
Tasted by heidoanddave on 12/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Black and dark fruit, with leather and cedar. Full bodied and great structure. A Napa wine. (1408 views)
Tasted by GulfIslandPond on 10/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Probably had lower expectations due to some of the previous CT notes but this showed quite well. Dark and inky throughout with a little bricking near the rim. Both black fruit and tannins were still very present and well balanced. Nothing mind-blowing here of course but still very nice with filet and chimichurri. I still think the base Heitz is a great value if you’re patient and seek it out the right price point. This was a good find for a back vintage a couple years ago at $50 and I’d take that all day long. (1349 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 11/8/2020 & rated 91 points: LWS de Negoce blind tasting: Double-decanted two hours before serving. Tasted blind, outdoors, on a 75 degree day, but I was the one who had double decanted everything and I immediately recognized it as the only green bottle. Medium deep ruby color with aromas of smoked meats and dark fruit. Still a good amount of tannins and very well-balanced with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, blood orange, and hint of graphite on the front, with some sweet orange mid-palate and a strained tea finish. This was a weird bottle -- I purchased it from a local liquor store the day before and immediately stood it up only to find when I uncorked it that a layer of sediment had more or less formed in between the cork and the wine. It was also the last bottle we tasted and was noticeably warmer than optimal. Still showed well to me, but I recognized the bottle and knew that it was something I enjoyed in the past so there may have been psychological factors at play. My friends found to have some off-putting barnyard notes that I did not detect. (2653 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 10/13/2020: Decanted 2 hours. Black cherry raspberry. Leather and cedar. Full bodied, nice structure. Bold, but not overripe. Long sweet finish. Classic Napa style. (2315 views)
Tasted by wineguy1968 on 10/3/2020: 10 years on and evolving nicely. This was a bit rough in its early days but it's smoothed out and developing nice earthy, mushroom, dark berry and floral violet notes. The body is still medium and the finish isn't super long but for those who prefer a more old-world style of Napa cab at a reasonable price will like this. Drink or hold. (2136 views)
Tasted by BBerzin on 5/28/2020: time to drink up (2407 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 4/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Heitz hits all the sweet spots. Classic Cabernet, showing dusty fruits and saddle leather on the nose. Not sweet at all, but it’s like eating a pie made of blueberry, raspberry and a little bit of bell pepper to make it interesting. Delish. (2403 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 4/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Tasted then decanted 2 1/2 hours before returning. Definitely improved with air. Purple with some ruby accents and a medium-deep intensity. Blueberry jam on the nose with a little shoe leather, and some tobacco emerging after awhile. Began with dark fruit masking a raspberry core. The fruit lightened after decant with rapsberry becoming more forceful and some soft bluberry as well. Very classic, Bordeaux-like feel. Really an excellent wine at this price point. (1590 views)
Tasted by Wine Kat on 4/17/2020 & rated 93 points: We opened this at precisely the right time. Nose is lovely with cedar and herbs and the palate was a little meaty when first opened and settled with wood, licorice, and dark berries. (1357 views)
Tasted by Charogers on 3/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking great. Good value, crowd pleaser (1530 views)
Tasted by schnurbie on 12/14/2019 & rated 95 points: Oh My! 2 hour decant with dinner from Mama Louise. This is an old school cab. Heitz Cellars have been one of my go to favorites and this one is delicious. (1571 views)
Tasted by tunaguy on 12/2/2019 & rated 91 points: cassis, bell pepper, and some tobacco after air. another solid heitz (1493 views)
Tasted by RayT on 11/20/2019 & rated 90 points: Purple in color. A big nose of cassis with some herbaceousness. On the palate: cassis, wood and prominent mint on the finish. This was a pnp but smoothed out with air. More of an old school wine style. (1768 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 5/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Kiss of Brett that blows off and my earlier note applies. (2442 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 4/25/2019 & rated 93 points: Killer wine from Heitz who usually doesn't disappoint. Super rich and polished, the depth of the fruit here comes in layers. The acidity wasn't too prominent, so my guess is this is probably nearing its peak but will likely hold and be a tasty mature wine over the next 5-10 years. (2267 views)
Tasted by Tahlequahdave1972 on 3/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Oh my goodness. So glad we waited. Decanted for three hours. Consumed over the following two. Red/purple in the glass. Wonderful nose of blackberry, forest floor, cedar and violets. Rich, full mouthfeel that delivered flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla, raspberry and nutmeg on an integrated, balanced texture that was also smooth, velvety and refined. Long, lasting finish that put the explanation mark on the experience. Definitely in the prime drinking window and absolutely wonderful! (1990 views)
Tasted by WhitbyWino on 12/25/2018 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed with prime rib dinner at Christmas. Spectacular. (2391 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
