Just supple yet rounded, with sharp acidity and creamy finish. All dancing around on the palate. White fruit and spice. Very very balanced. 95-96 (1355 views) | | Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 1/17/2018: From magnum this was in sparkling form. All oyster shell and orchard fruits with some mushroom and toast development. It still boasts a vigorous mousse and pinhead bead. It has good volume and excellent persistence. (2536 views) | | Tasted by Barry Rothof on 10/30/2016 & rated 94 points: @ Restaurant Vineum in Rotterdam: Sweet fully mature nose displaying toffee, dried fruit and hints of sherry. On the palate no bubbles left but some strong acidity and freshness, changing in the glass into complex aged flavors with truffle, baked apple and toasted brioche. Impressive and a great treat! (3864 views) | | Tasted by Burgaddict on 10/14/2016: Leiden in Rotterdam at Vineum: My first old Cristal, in fact almost 40 years old. Secondary fruit, caramel and sherry tones balanced by good remaining acidity. I had to get used to this style of mature champagne. Got more complex in the glass. Fine to very fine. (3303 views) | | Tasted by dvansteenderen on 10/14/2016 & rated 94 points: Small tasting glass @ VINEUM during service, so a brief note. Amazing this 38 year old Champagne. Tasted twice, once directly from the bottle after opening and a very small glass at the end of the evening. This gained more complexity with time and air. Very special to get to taste this! (1777 views) | | Tasted by LWI on 10/19/2012 & rated 98 points: Mature and Maturing Bordeaux (Oslo): Mature smell, almost tropical fruit, apricots; vinous and very complex, a slight sweetness, yellow fruit, lemon-candy, caramel. A very good bottle. (7168 views) | | Tasted by Atreyu on 10/8/2011 & rated 97 points: Big surprise! Expectations weren't all that high for this bottle served alongside the mighty 1976. But this certainly held it's own with it's darker tones of walnuts, coffee, dried tomatoes and tobacco among the more usual lemon candy and white flowers.
Hedonistic mouthfeel but still elegant. Impressive! Completely mature but not a hint of oxidation or other signs of heading down hill. Drink now or keep forever. (6100 views) | | Tasted by kmforster on 2/14/2011 & rated 91 points: Light amber color; still quite effervescent; nose good but not great for an older Cristal; lively on palate but not with the explosion of flavor you get in some vintages; a bit shorter than hoped for on the finish. The 1975 I had a few months ago was much better (no shock there). (5606 views) |

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.ChampagneThe vineyards of Champagne on weinlagen-info |
