Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 177 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jhngo on 4/19/2024 & rated 96 points: Amazingly fresh alive with no signs of age. A little simple and clean but wow just so good. (95 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 3/30/2024 & rated 97 points: Tasted it blind together with Cristal 1999, Cristal Vinotheque 1999 and Dom P2 2003 Among 7 friends, the verdict is mixed with no clear winner.

Dom P2 2003 have pronounced nose intensity with notes of toast, bread, mineral, sea shell. High acidity and long finish.

Cristal 1999 from palate taste similar to Dom P2, notes of toast, brioche, mineral, baked red apple.

Cristal Vinotheque 1999 tasted fresher, with green notes, grapefruit, lemon, pear, green apple. (218 views)
Tasted by mfimiani47 on 3/1/2024 & rated 94 points: Sensational. Refined, lively and a wonderful lift. Such class in the glass. (247 views)
Tasted by oxwombat on 10/7/2023 & rated 95 points: Opened at Otto e Mezzo in HK. Slowly enjoyed over a long lunch.

This was wonderful bubbly. The colour was lighter than I would have expected from a 24 year old champagne, and still very fresh. The nose wafted white flowers and notes of honey, mixed in with grapefruit and citrus. Slightly richer accents of brioche, yeastiness and toastiness were there but took a bit of air to come more to the fore. Great acidity providing precision and balance throughout. Really enjoyable.

Great spot right now and very good for my tastes. Will keep at this level for a while assuming good provenance, and may even slightly improve. However if you have an itch for aged Cristal, don't hesitate to enjoy - this won't let you down! Thanks again to M for the wonderful treat. (1403 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 8/23/2023 & rated 97 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of sweet biscuit, toast, brioche, red apple. High acidity yet balance on palate. Drinking at its peak now. (1139 views)
Tasted by edwine__ on 2/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Fully mature champagne that is drinking well now. Nose is showing great with citrus, white flower, brioche, honey, nuttiness and slightly stone fruit. Palate is elegance, round and harmonious. (464 views)
Tasted by dream on 1/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Really fine, ripe and lovely but less depth and a shorter finish than the best vintages. (2109 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 9/15/2022 & rated 95 points: Fantastic . Drinking well. Full body golden color. (2737 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 6/19/2022 & rated 94 points: Good looking bottle with a medium yellow center said this bottle was treated well. The nose was very quiet at first but picked up some intensity with air.

In the mouth, this was classic Cristal with it refinement and yet lovely subtle richness. However, the effervescence was definitely fading.

Drink ASAP in my book. However, this wine was best 2 hours after being open and arguably reached 95 points. (3104 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Richness more than precision. (3769 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 11/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Thanksgiving day. This bottle was long time resident in my cellar, a gift from a friend. I thought this dinner was as good an excuse as any to open it. Medium chill, drank pre and post dinner - over about 2.5 hours.

Medium gold color. Bubbles were fined and still youthful - fresh over the time we drank it. Crisp nose showing citrus, brioche, almond. Palate repeats adding some orchard fruit, lemon zest, toast, batonnage. Chalky mineral notes through the mid and back palate. Smooth texture, refined.

I don't have the palate experience with Champagne that I do with still wines, hard for me to make educated comparisons to other vintages or comparable producers. This seems to be nicely aged while still showing the crispness and effervescence of a younger sparkling wine. Beautiful showing, glad I decided to open it! (3474 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 11/15/2021 & rated 96 points: I often find Cristal to be too strict, linear and lacking complexity, surely because they were drunk too young. At over 20 yrs age this had shed its tightness and had texture and complexity of a great white burgundy. Consumate elegance and refinement, a real treat. Thanks John!! 96+ (3050 views)
Tasted by Xavier94 on 11/13/2021 & rated 95 points: A very delineated nose of almond shavings with honeysuckle floral complexity, with baked apple introduce fresh, zesty flavors in the mouth. Delicious stuff. Long and fresh with compelling chalky minerality throughout. Very expressive for Cristal. No rush in drinking. (2184 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 5/22/2021 & rated 90 points: good a bit drying and slightly sweet. (2440 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 3/27/2021 & rated 92 points: First Unmasked Dinner with Steve & Lucie (Our Place): Slo-oxed for 15 minutes. The color was a clear, light yellow-gold. The effervescence was less than moderate, and the perlage was fine and pinpoint. The nose was clean, with aromas of citrus, brioche, and some minerality. On the medium palate, the wine was dry, with medium plus acidity, and a delicate mousse. There were flavors of white peach, lemon citrus, brioche, and minerality. The finish was medium to plus and toasty. The quality is outstanding, but this wine did not excite anyone as much as the bottle of 1999 Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill that we all shared on 12/31/19. (2047 views)
Tasted by premiercruclasse on 12/1/2020 & rated 96 points: Birthday drink 2020. (1741 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 12/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Brought by Davyd to dinner at Otto Ristorante. Drank over 2 hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, gold colour. Legs. Fine perlage.
Nose is cleam, medium+ intensity, with aromas of citrus lemon drops, dripping with bits of surrounding honey cream, brioche, lots of minerals - steely and stony, white peaches. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honeyed lemon drops, white peaches, steely minerality, salty saline minerals, toasted bread with hints of smoke. And then comes the laser focused long long finish.
Outstanding quality. The tautness and focus of this Cristal is amazing. It isn't off the blocks flashy in your face but the tension builds up in the mouth as the mouth-feel is so good, and then oh the orgasmic release of the long long finish.
Still rather fresh and feels like it could go on for years! (5316 views)
Tasted by yuti1225 on 10/20/2019 & rated 96 points: From Jero.
Ultra fresh ( maybe bigger format is a factor?) with citrus fruit, develop over 3 hours and new stuff keep coming up! Really nice wine!

Full, complex and powerful nose. Mature. Ripe apple, cream, chalk, chocolate and orange peel in lovely combination.
Medium-fullish/fullish body. Creamy and fresh. Very good grip and long finish. Chocolate, ripe apple, orange peel. Rich, round and harmonious. À pointe! (2314 views)
Tasted by colin107 on 7/29/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted so young and fresh. Lots of pineapples. I'm not sure how people have determined that one should drink this by 2019. (5205 views)
Tasted by nihraguk on 7/26/2019: Closed, a little disappointing. Some depth evident and some brioche on the nose, especially on the first pour. But ungiving thereafter for most of the night. (4815 views)
Tasted by Mhbeaune on 7/24/2019 flawed bottle: Corked. Purchased as part of case of 12 upon release. Successfully consumed 10 bottles this one was literally corked. Never come across or heard of this before. Have you ? (4346 views)
Tasted by pclin on 6/3/2019: Rich and creamy, drinking well but lacks a bit of details. (3209 views)

(LOUIS ROEDERER CRISTAL) #1; Pierre Rovani says, "One of the finest Champagnes I have ever brought to my lips, the 1999 Cristal bursts from the glass with fresh hazelnut and apple scents. Elegant, deep, and silky-textured, this medium to full-bodied beauty is immensely concentrated, pure, packed with apple flavors, and astoundingly long in the finish.PR-98  98 (PR) points

(Cristal) This was tight, tight, tight. Beautiful fruit and minerality along with great cut on the palate. Not showing that much in the way of finesse right now but it will come with time. Easily the tightest young Cristal I have ever had.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
