Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 125 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by presterjohn on 3/4/2024: Fully aged fruit, tarry, slightly scented, woody and juicy, quite tannic. Good wine, too old but still very pleasant (155 views)
Tasted by IndyTom on 10/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Didn't think this wine was going to be drinkable given that WA gave the drinking range to 2016. I was surprised to see it was still fine--albeit at the end of its life. Decanted for about 1 hour. It was a bit tight, but loosened up during the next 2 hours. Nice delicate cherry notes. A mature wine that deserves respect for the elderly. I liked it! (1374 views)
Tasted by goffo on 4/18/2020 & rated 79 points: My last bottle of Langhe, they’ve all been good though this one, unlike the one a few weeks earlier was perhaps on the edge. The cherry nose still evident, some medicinal notes, but a little muted. The finish was shortish, but still nicely balanced if not very exciting. (1467 views)
Tasted by goffo on 4/4/2020 & rated 85 points: Still fresh given the age and suggestion it might be past its best. Light vibrant red fruit nose; actually dry, tannic with some astringency. Long finish. Pretty good, and would probably be better with a nice hearty meat dish than some Doritos....😊 (1446 views)
Tasted by nicefish on 9/12/2017 & rated 88 points: Great wine. Just pastors prime. (3693 views)
Tasted by WineJester on 7/16/2017 & rated 87 points: Ages very well! Should be drunk now. Had it with well seasoned pork and beets. (2318 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 7/25/2016 & rated 88 points: Decent Nebbiolo and decent value, may lack a bit of stuffing and finishes a little dry because of that, other bottles have been a bit better (4629 views)
Tasted by presterjohn on 10/25/2015: Correct tar and roses but takes an hour or more to open up. Unwinds to become almost rustic. Very good for a langhe. Should keep a while but might not improve (5374 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 9/23/2015 & rated 87 points: Nose of morello cherry. Ripe red berry fruit, medium body, fine acidity and integrated tannins with a fruit cake richness on the finish. Very good. (1520 views)
Tasted by etc on 8/8/2015: Best QPR for the month. Structure, fruit, balance were all there in a nice simple package. Was hoping to get more off the nose, but I never gave it a chance to breath. Nothing overwhelming just what I'd hope for. (5980 views)
Tasted by presterjohn on 6/10/2015: Perfumed sweet fruit, sharp and tangy, rich lush finish. lovely. Probably at its best? (6149 views)
Tasted by David Bohnsack on 5/19/2015 & rated 88 points: Time to drink up. Loads of character & spice, but I think it is near end of life. (4632 views)
Tasted by presterjohn on 5/3/2015: Very concentrated red fruit, penetrating, a little development, strong acidic spine. One for the purists (3304 views)
Tasted by oropeza on 4/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Cherries and strawberries on the nose. Starts with the fruit in the mouth, then moves into some serious earthiness and finishes with a nice chew. Better integrated than the 12 at this point. Nice! (2493 views)
(2194 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/26/2015: Ruby. Ripe dark cherry fruit, fair amount of heft and texture. Licorice and a touch of caramel in the mouth. Pulled together by superb acidity and a dusty, earthy finish. Lots to this Nebbiolo. (2074 views)
Tasted by gbanks on 2/10/2015: Seemed fairly mature in character given its relatively few years, but this was not a bad thing. Anisette, pine, cherry. Light enough to drink on its own and in good quantity. Interesting that 2010 was declared a bad vintage by the Produttori, and indeed this is perhaps a touch shy of what I usually expect from this bottling, but still one of my go-tos for daily QPR I-talians. (2290 views)
Tasted by MrBjorn on 12/6/2014 & rated 89 points: cherries, pine and amaretto on the nose. nice attack of acidity and tannins - a little thin bodied to be fantastic but still a good example of nebbiolo from Barbaresco! (2787 views)
Tasted by patsox on 10/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Still satisfying and quite interesting. (3005 views)
Tasted by JVG on 8/16/2014: Ruby in color at the center and brick at the edge. On the nose, flowers, sweet spice, and licorice backed by sweet red fruit aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry. There’s also a touch of smoke. An OK bouquet, but not especially expressive or complex, even for region-level Langhe nebbiolo. Very uncompromising on the palate. Bone dry and very drying, with firm, slightly green tannins. Tart cranberry and underripe strawberry fruit flavors, and a spicy finish with decent length. Definitely gives more pleasure the more you drink as your palate acclimates to the double whammy of tannin and acid, and it’s certainly a traditional, varietally correct nebbiolo wine. It doesn’t have the expressiveness of wines from better terroir, but it’s an enjoyable old-school red. (3654 views)
Tasted by patsox on 8/3/2014 & rated 88 points: A little thin on the fruit; otherwise excellent. (3688 views)
Tasted by rbancroft on 5/11/2014 & rated 87 points: This wine tasted much better on day 3. Initial 2 hours of decanting wasn't enough, but by day 3 the bitterness had disappeared with a nice mid-palate and lingering pleasant finish. I have a few other nebbiolo's to try before I decide if this one is worth getting again, but it might be. (2108 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 4/7/2014 & rated 87 points: Medium-weight, strawberry fruit, still some structure although by no means tannic, this wine is in a nice place now and should continue to improve for several years. (4616 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 3/22/2014 & rated 79 points: Unbalanced - the acidity is tongue-curling and the fruit, if there ever was some, is long gone, thin and frail. On the upside there is some timid notes of rosehip and tea on the nose. This ended up not being drunk. Opened up some non-alcoholic beer instead with the saturday meal. (4195 views)
Tasted by sidaga on 3/8/2014 & rated 88 points: Belle robe rubis translucide.
(3983 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
