Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 62 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lozatron on 3/13/2024: Pol Roger Wine Society 150th Anniversary Tasting (Churchill War Rooms): Dosage 34 g/l. Pale colour. No sweetness on the nose. More balanced, less sweet on the palate than I expected - it's only really the aftertaste which is sweet - there's a great deal of acidity to balance the sweetness. More a curiosity than something I'd choose to buy, but a well put together drink. (313 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 10/9/2023 & rated 89 points: Le Tour de Champagne tasting (Amsterdam, NL): Normally not a big fan of non-dry champagnes (this has 54 g/l residual sugar), but this was nice and balanced (532 views)
Tasted by grapenomad on 8/8/2023 & rated 86 points: Had this as a digestive after A LOT of wine. Deep golden in the glass with persistent bubbles. Nose is marked by notes of canned peach, nectarine, poached pear, yellow apple, vanilla. Medium-bodied with moderate acidity and a fair bit of sweetness. Not entirely balanced, but not off track either. Easy to drink Champagne, but not a repeat for me. (668 views)
Tasted by Shiaxonna on 1/21/2023 & rated 87 points: Still not really comfortable with sweet champagne. But this one is really good. Can live with it! (878 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 12/2/2022 & rated 91 points: Buttery, brioche, peaches. Sweet. Good balance between the sweetness and acidity of sweeter citrus eg red grapefruit or blood orange.

Enjoyable drink for a celebratory occasion and a conversation starter due to the sweeter nature of the Champagne which is much more unusual nowadays. (1081 views)
Tasted by scyrene on 9/12/2022 & rated 85 points: I've never been wowed by demi-sec, but when it's on offer I can be tempted. Mid lemon colour. Quite broad, deep aroma, not entirely clean initially, but some orchard fruit. Quite concentrated taste, pronounced sweetness. Cleaner with air but entirely underwhelming. [Cork + cage; 12.5% abv; Booths, -25% @ £35.25]. (1139 views)
Tasted by GlennO86 on 7/2/2021 & rated 89 points: Straw yellow in the glass. Almost reductive initially. Then smell of pear, honey, toast and subtle floral notes. Quite sweet, but well balanced by a fresh acidety. Citrus and green apples on the palate. Creamy bubbles. Long and citric exit. (1748 views)
Tasted by Pega on 1/30/2021: . (1862 views)
Tasted by Neras on 12/31/2020 & rated 91 points: Great for midnight toast for the new year. (1614 views)
Tasted by boston617 on 8/29/2020 & rated 90 points: Very sweet and rich...buttery with notes of vanilla, kiwi, and other tropical fruits like pineapple. (1638 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 11/25/2019 & rated 90 points: A private tasting and dinner (Champagne Pol Roger, Épernay, France): Tasted blind. Identical to my previous note. (2601 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 11/25/2019 & rated 90 points: A private tasting and dinner (Champagne Pol Roger, Épernay, France): An equal blend of the three classic varieties, three years sur lattes, dosage of 34 gr/l, followed by one year post disgorgement ageing to integrate the sugar. Creamy lemon, gentle sweetness, floral and lively, supple and fresh rather than cloying, good length. (1890 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 7/12/2019 & rated 91 points: Spectator Winemaker's Lunch in the Spectator boardroom (Westminster) led by James Simpson MW.
This is only my second experience of this wine; the last (noted) under the same auspices in 2014. Then it was mature stock, this was much more current. Core fruit of crystallised crunchy pineapple, granitic/steely minerality, restrained sweetness c.40g/l and (as per '14 note) an assertive acidity that prevents cloying. Only a tad fuller than the regular NV. A good accompaniment for our cheese and (I should imagine) lighter fresh fruit based desserts.
Unlike the standard Pol NV which ages well for a few years would suggest drinking on purchase. Will be buying a case. (1444 views)
Tasted by NickA on 3/26/2019 & rated 88 points: Actually found this more acidic than the title suggests, although that's not a bad thing - in good balance. Not the most complex though. Hoped for more toastiness. (1668 views)
 Tasted by JohnC2 on 2/23/2019: SoBe 2019
Nice summer day or dessert (1554 views)
Tasted by Litt12 on 1/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Rich golden honey, nuttiness and round.
Dinner @Alinea (1382 views)
Tasted by Neras on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: Very nice. A touch of sweetness makes it good with dessert. Nice nose and good on the palate. (2099 views)
Tasted by pcwoz on 12/17/2017 & rated 90 points: Nice rich off dry style. Well made. Not over sweet. Still some freshness. (1727 views)
Tasted by TheNeuroticDobermann on 1/27/2017 & rated 89 points: A good, traditional style of demi-sec Champagne, which is a healthy reminder to today's critics of what most Champagne used to taste like. Rich, creamy, brioche-like nose, with evident sweetness: buttered pastry, candied melon, creme anglaise, hints of chantilly, some caramel notes. Quite rich and forward on the palate: plenty of creamy lemon curd and white peach, pastry cream, and candied fruit well balanced by the vibrant acidity and very fine, consistent perlage. Very interesting as a conversation wine. (2407 views)
Tasted by CJM on 12/31/2016 & rated 88 points: Clear slightly pale straw with copious tiny bubbles. Toasted pear cobbler, vanilla, oak, peach. Low acids, low tannins, very slightly sweet. Lemon curd. Short balanced finish. (2175 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 4/27/2016 & rated 85 points: Tasted at Munskänkarna Göteborg, Champagne-class session 2, flight 2.

What can I say, I prefer my champagne dry...That said, this is of course not a bad wine, but not in any way worth the money. If I want something sweet to end a meal, there are so many other options out there, I would never go for this stuff. (2792 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 3/3/2016: demi sec champagne
Less time on lees but aged longer after degorgement
You can feel the sweetness more than taste it
Lemons and orange on the palate, good acidity and long toasty finish
Much toastier than standard NV
Good with pear tart (2397 views)
Tasted by canan on 1/1/2016 & rated 90 points: Some sweetness but not overly so. Pretty good balance with the dominant grape fruit and a piercing acidity.
I had not expected to but I liked this a lot. Probably the best Demi-sec I have tried :-) (2499 views)
Tasted by ETT95 on 10/17/2015 & rated 89 points: Rich, biscuity and buttery. Not high in acidity. Good value of its price. (2130 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 11/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Spectator Winemaker's Dinner with Véronique Drouhin-Boss at Home House, Portman Square. Limited note taking.
Identical cuvée (1/3 Ch, 1/3 PN 1/3 PM) to standard NV with extra dosage. Aroma of ripe pear, gently frothing mousse, well judged medium sweetness that is beautifully balanced by an assertive acid spine. Touch of toast in background - ? mature stock. Accompanied the Almond Milk Panna Cotta dessert to perfection. Don't overchill.
Excellent (2864 views)

Pol Roger

Producer website
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family-owned grande marque Champagne houses. Their grande marque status was guaranteed at the turn of the century when about 20 producers banded together
to establish exacting quality controls for Champagne. The annual production at Pol Roger - less than 120,000 cases - is found in the best restaurants of France, England, and the USA, and is exported to
over 30 countries. Pol Roger also was the Champagne of choice of British dignitary Sir Winston Churchill, who once said of Champagne, "...In victory I deserve it, and in defeat I need it!".

Champagne Blend

"Champagne blend" is a classic grape blend that typically includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier in any proportions.

However, this blend can also include Arbane, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier and/or Pinot Blanc as well.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
