Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 96 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wtianseter on 7/29/2013 & rated 87 points: The color is a medium red plum; the nose is dust, cherries and boysenberry. The taste starts out with a tart fruit and then shifts to a tart dry tannin with sweet tone on the side. The tart stays in the mouth for minutes. I’d say this will continue to improve for another few years with the acidity that is present. Not really much spice at all in this Zin. (5581 views)
Tasted by CPA_SLP on 3/9/2013 & rated 89 points: nice bottle of zin - decent balance of fruit with not an over powering finish. (5867 views)
Tasted by Enzo D on 12/15/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted one hour. This wine has mellowed quite a bit over time. Very nice, but don't wait much longer if you still have it (6209 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 11/14/2012 & rated 86 points: juicy fruit, nothing complex but imminently quaffable (6348 views)
Tasted by kmicho on 7/11/2012 & rated 85 points: Muddled berries dominate. Pretty hot even after 30 mins of decanting. A bit heavy on the tanins. A little moss or wet leaves, but otherwise a bit simple. Still, an enjoyable wine. (6913 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 12/12/2011 & rated 88 points: Was quite impressed. Had some rough edges years ago that have gone away. Great fruit. Finish is most impressive. Medium body mouth feel. Won't get better. Drink up (3537 views)
Tasted by mhenry on 6/25/2011 & rated 88 points: Nice Zin. Different from our other '07 zins, making this a nice change. Stronger flavors than I expected for the price, but without the heat and bite that I don't care for. (4289 views)
Tasted by FoodMuse on 2/14/2011 & rated 92 points: Incredibly wonderful aromas of toasted chocolate biscotti and raspberry jam. Juicy flavors of ripe red and black raspberries. Intensely fruity without being cloying. Notes of smoke, leather, and star anise in the finish. A fantastic red. (4668 views)
Tasted by Winecat on 2/12/2011 & rated 86 points: Very good Zin. Perfect for pizza (4445 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 1/31/2011 & rated 88 points: Decent weeknight choice. Good zin fruit, short finish. (4551 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 1/22/2011 & rated 87 points: Perfectly servicable Zinfandel for a weekday night, good fruit, a bit low on acid. Nice nose, good palste that falls a tiny bit flat, clean finish, complements food well. (4670 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 1/17/2011 & rated 91 points: very nice for a inexpensive zin. big nose, but not overly fruity. Easy to drink with smooth sweet tannins and nice round body. Finish was long and even. Purity in flavor and nice (light) zin pepper kick, put this a notch above. (4684 views)
Tasted by Zinlady on 12/23/2010 & rated 87 points: Had with roast chicken and cranberry sauce. It was good but not just fabulous Was not big and berry fruit flavors were not present (4859 views)
Tasted by Xfactor on 12/19/2010 & rated 86 points: Opened up with the centellino. purple, well developed body. nose of blueberry, some blackberries with semisweet chocolate, dry nose. palate was full on blueberry, some chocolate with hints of vanilla, oak, and mild italian cooking spices. finish was medium in length, good mouthfeel, blueberry and blackberry with some oak with hints of vanilla. well balanced structure, alcohol well integrated just under the senses. (4827 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/17/2010 & rated 86 points: Dark magenta color; ripe currant, golden raisin, fruit cocktail nose; ripe currant, fruit cocktail palate; medium finish (4368 views)
Tasted by Hallgeir on 11/27/2010 & rated 88 points: Søte bær, moden frukt, veldig sterk aroma, litt krydder. Lang ettersmak, hyggelig bekjentskap (5299 views)
Tasted by Rick B on 11/7/2010 & rated 88 points: Always love this stuff. A great value! (4749 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 11/7/2010 flawed bottle: Judging by everyone else's notes here, the bottle I had was TCA'd up -- very muted nose, little fruit, with a piney sort of character. Not what I'm used to from TCA, but I'm just hoping that this isn't what other people are calling appealing. (5397 views)
Tasted by pmik on 10/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Great QPR. Nice Zin. Fruit forward and fresh. Little bouquet (5491 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 10/9/2010 & rated 90 points: straightforward but good Zinfandel. great for the price... (5491 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 9/27/2010 & rated 89 points: 15.2% ABV. Translucent dark ruby garnet. Light clove spice nose with a slight metallic quality and zinberry fruit. Medium full bodied with black raspberry fruit that has a sort of bright peppery metallic edge. I enjoyed this bottle more than the previous one. Maybe the last one was flawed in some way. (5733 views)
Tasted by pld07 on 9/25/2010 & rated 87 points: had this wine with a bbq brisket sandwich. this is a BIG wine, but smooth..dark chocalate components on the finish....big nose with tons of fruit..not as pepper-ish as other zins. (5783 views)
Tasted by Wink on 9/21/2010 & rated 90 points: Drank with dinner and afterward. Ruby and purple. Nose of smoke and ripe dark fruits. Medium palate of ripe blackberry, black cherry, fig, mocha, and vanilla. Excellent finish. Exceptional, focused acidity. Mild tannins. Unobtrusive oak. Very food-friendly. Extra points for QPR. (5746 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 9/19/2010 & rated 87 points: 15.2% ABV. Translucent dark ruby garnet. Muted clove and graham cracker nose with a background metallic note and something alongside that made me think this was very slightly corked. Medium full bodied with tinny black raspberry fruit. I am planning to come back to this tomorrow and see if the TCA has gotten stronger with air. If it is not corked, then its just a pretty average Zin. Update: not corked, just pretty average zin. (5791 views)
Tasted by tendring on 9/10/2010 & rated 89 points: Lunch - a long one - at Marcus Wareing's Restaurant (Berkeley Hotel): An inspired wine to go with suckling pig.
Leathery, fruity and fresh on the nose.
Fruity with soft tannins, smooth, quite short. (6360 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
