Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 89 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by HarlanPSU on 4/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Stellar aged zin. No sign of fading, but maturity it there. I like the fruit bomb to bleed off and have a bit more complexity and drinking this at this point paid off. Fruit but not in your face. Really great. Loved drinking this. (500 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 4/18/2020 & rated 87 points: To be honest, this was harder to drink than I remember. Was it the high alcohol? Was it the mega-forward fruit? Concentration? The wine was not flawed, but it was interesting to try this some time later. Rather simple berry pie compote with a dollop of heat and snappy Zinfandel showing through. I wouldn't hold much longer, but for those uber-Cali fans this is for you. (1156 views)
Tasted by riskvsreward on 2/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Fruit forward, a bit syrup but enjoyable (2134 views)
Tasted by jermsd on 3/27/2016 & rated 88 points: It's gotten darker, heavier, and bolder. Plum, currant, light spice. Tasty and good for at least a couple more years. (3647 views)
Tasted by 1997cobalt on 3/15/2016 & rated 90 points: A great go to for a big full bodied daily (3274 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 1/14/2016 & rated 90 points: I expect a red table wine to be lean and tart when first opened and to flesh out and soften after it's been able to breathe. For the second time in a week, however, I've experienced a Zinfandel that started out sweet and Port-like before morphing into something entirely different (and better). Even at this relatively late stage of its maturation, this wine needs at least 90 minutes of air, after which it's quite pleasant. Interestingly, the predominant flavor is plum, not the various berries, bramble, or pepper I expect from a Zin. However, it has a good nose, a fairly rich texture, and a decent finish. Seems to be holding up just fine. (3470 views)
Tasted by waldoavedude on 12/25/2015 & rated 84 points: Sweet black cherry on the nose but tastes a little sharp; still a bit tannin-y. Still enjoyable overall. (3269 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 8/16/2015 & rated 87 points: About a month since my last bottle of Scout's Honor. Minimal breathing time. Drank with NOLA-style BBQ shrimp (with Emeril's Worcester sauce). Sweetness of the wine complemented the heat in the dish (and vice versa). Kind of plummy, with decent body and a decent finish. A little too port-like for my taste these days (I might have loved it ten years ago). Enjoyablity is highly dependent on how much air it's gotten and what food it's accompanying. (2867 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 7/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Opened about an hour before drinking. Red fruit and a lot of vanilla on the nose. Black raspberries on the palate. Quite rich, with a very good finish. Most notable characteristic: complete integration and seamlessness, from nose to finish. Least notable characteristic: complete absence of pepper, spices, bramble, or anything else that might indicate that it's (mostly) a Zinfandel. Very tasty, but no personality. Lack of tannins seems to predict a short shelf life. (1902 views)
Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 7/3/2015 & rated 89 points: No need to hold, probably better to drink now given the balance of fading fruit and mild tannins. Prominent wood. (1848 views)
Tasted by jermsd on 6/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Excellent! Very drinkable now. No need to decant or let sit (1742 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 3/3/2014 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Consistent. Delicious. (3682 views)
Tasted by tmcg55 on 12/13/2013 & rated 91 points: Great blend enjoyed by all! (3636 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 12/2/2013 & rated 91 points: This is a killer zin blend. Just killer. Better than The Prisoner in my opinion. (3638 views)
Tasted by dbaruch on 11/15/2013 & rated 95 points: Give it 90 minutes to reveal itself. Amazing! (3703 views)
Tasted by 1997cobalt on 10/24/2013 & rated 90 points: slightly sweet on first tasting, but is smooth and with enough complexity to make this a week day favorite (3670 views)
 Tasted by 1997cobalt on 10/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Tasty (2211 views)
Tasted by jermsd on 9/21/2013 & rated 94 points: Just shy of perfect. Peppery, full mouth feel with clean finish. Exceptional. Drinkable immediately (couldn't wait to see how it developed). (2094 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 9/17/2013 & rated 90 points: Restaurant Pour: Victoria and Alberts, 2013 ... Rich and spicy. Bright, brambleberry fruit up front. A little lush, with some creamy notes. Very big and full. (2160 views)
Tasted by glhackney on 7/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Great blend! Smooth...Full flavored fruit, spice on the end... Great value. (2433 views)
Tasted by austinbeeman- austinbeeman.com on 6/23/2013 & rated 91 points: Red currants and new French oak. Very 'Zinny.' Big strawberry flavors. Lush, but complex. Long finish. Chocolate, mocha, and berries.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
