A unique field blend, one which is likely completely different from the neighboring producer, which is why I pick up a GS whenever I see one on the shelf. Fleshy fruit & a healthy acid base walk in harmony here. Medium bodied and by turns, both round and crisp. Layers of spicy fresh fruit kept bright with that acidity.
Power resides behind the bright fruit & this is a wine of finesse. The complexity emerges with our red beans & rice. Very good. PALATE: refreshing acidity (almost feels pettilant) up front blends into the apple flavor and a slightly spicy finish (baked apple pie with baking spices). OVERALL: this wine offers an interesting juxtaposition - floral mineral nose, bright acid palate and spicy finish that reminds me of fall. Really interesting wine - and the "mixed grape" story of Gemischter Satz makes for fun conversation / education with friends. (2391 views) | | Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 4/24/2013: Mineral and more apple tones that in previous vintages. Palate is fleshier and more rounded than in previous vintages as well. Is it the weather or a change in style? (1611 views) | | Tasted by diggydan on 4/16/2013 & rated 91 points: All Vienna in one wine...so they say, as the wine's most significant contributions are made by Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, Welschriesling, and Chardonnay, with smaller contributions from Riesling, Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, Sylvaner, Traminer, and Neuberger.
I don't know about the importer's description - I'm picking up sweet apricot on the nose (Riesling?) and a spicy, peppery quality (Gruner?): interesting, beautiful! The palate is ripe green fruit, wonderful acidity, and finishes with a hint of sweetness and minerality.
A really excellent wine powered by its unique nose. (968 views) | | Tasted by JustNathan on 12/2/2012 & rated 87 points: Pale lemon, crisp, slightly spicy nose and taste. High acidity, bone dry, mineral, mid length, lacks a bit of definition but a pleasant aperitif. I'd guess that this wine has Grauburgunder, Riesling, and Gruner Veltliner components for starters - no information on the producer's website. Why are producers of Gemischter Satz so coy about the cepage? (638 views) |
