Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 95 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BillBell73 on 3/8/2024 & rated 90 points: Very light in color despite its age. Beautiful nose. This has definitely integrated and become more drinkable over time although the alcohol is noticeable and a bit out of balance. (96 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 6/27/2023: This might disappoint traditional Gewurz fans for lacking the big spicy Estee Lauder perfume nose, but that's exactly why I liked it. Graceful with Asian pear, tangerine and very subtle spices. (363 views)
Tasted by MNWG on 6/15/2022 & rated 100 points: B This is the L 170 which is a blend of two vineyards. Quite dry and with lovely spice and floral notes on the nose. In the mouth it has even more spice and with the acids allowing a Long finish. Simply lovely. It can probably go for another year or so but is perfect now. I'm glad I have one more bottle. (459 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/28/2019 & rated 90 points: Aromatic. Rose petals, lychee, Asian pear and anise aromas and flavors. Long, soft dry finish with a hint of white pepper. Nice wine. Served with smoked turkey. (1231 views)
Tasted by maxima on 2/13/2019 & rated 89 points: Frais avec une belle acidité. Des épices et
des herbes, bel équilibre et longueur.
Bien aimé. (1967 views)
Tasted by tastark on 1/27/2019: Proper storage since release. This was an L170 bottling and was firing on ALL cylinders. SOOO much going on with this wine. At the perfect junction of primary and secondary. The nose is textbook gewurzt. The palate is just so full of personality. This wine can likely go for another decade, but why risk it? Drinking it now will delight you in every way possible. (1425 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/6/2017 & rated 92 points: Very good indeed. The richness has subsided and now more terror driven. (1889 views)
Tasted by ddisler on 11/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark hue of staw yellow in color. Nose of apricot and a whiff of petrol with some floral notes. Initial flavor of honeysuckle and peach with a syrupy sweetness. Mid-pallate kicks in quickly with strong notes of lychee fruit that linger into a long finish. Overall, better than when this was young. (1785 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 3/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Aromatic nose of rose petals, lychee and apricot. Lychee, rose petals and white pepper on the mid-palate, lead to a long floral and spicy finish. A little light on the acidic balance. (1697 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 2/28/2017: This has integrated nicely but still a good wallop of acidity and alcohol. Just enough sweetness to complement spicy food and very floral. A nice bargain even if it wasn't very drinkable on release. (1534 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 10/16/2016 flawed bottle: Honey in color. Fresh mowed straw, this bottle we sampled via Coravin last Christmas. Has oxidized fruit, and clearly changed from my previous note. Oh well. Another example that the Coravin doesn't always work out. (1855 views)
Tasted by PierreLunaire on 5/15/2016: Wonderful Gewurztraminer to be enjoyed on its own. To sweet for food, except perhaps a mature Mûnster. But as an image of summer and flowerering it is "a point". (1706 views)
Tasted by djwitzel on 2/7/2016 & rated 85 points: Showing its age, a little flabby and slight oxidation, but richer than I expected. Much honeysuckle. Probably should have consumed two years ago. (1772 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 12/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Smells sweet, but drier on the palate. Nose is almost like a Sauternes. Lemon zest, peach, honey, oil. Liked but not floored. (1524 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 12/24/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark straw, mineral, honey, exotic spices, mango, with tangerine and bone dry but lots of floral notes. Mildly atypical for Gewurtztraminer. (1548 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 8/17/2015 & rated 91 points: This was really good. Preferred this over California gewürztraminer. Nice color and nice taste (1589 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 6/15/2015: Very, very nice. I should have bought a lot of these. I don't generally drink a lot of gewurtz but all of a sudden I have a bunch of things that they pair nicely with. Notes are the same as last week - very floral, almost sweet, with some white fruit. It paired nicely with a sweet pungent dish. When by itself it has a nice chalkiness to it that makes it interesting alone as well. (1452 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 6/8/2015: Very nice. This was a great pairing with stinky cheese. Very floral, almost sweet, some white fruit. (1308 views)
Tasted by danielk168 on 5/7/2015 & rated 88 points: acidity seem to be dropping, could be better I think (1233 views)
Tasted by djwitzel on 7/7/2014 & rated 87 points: Pleasant, on the sweet side, but still crisp. (1636 views)
Tasted by andrewctorrens on 6/9/2014: Dry. Celery, lychee and super spicy like a ginger beer. Mesmerizing bouquet. (1460 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 3/16/2014 & rated 88 points: Clear light gold in the glass, aroma of tropical flowers and fruits but young and primary on the palate. Screeching acidity and a little too much oomph so give this a few years to settle down. (1815 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 1/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Clear golden. Great sweet spicy, rich Gerwurtz. nose. Very intense nose and flavours but the finish has dried out since a previous bottle.

Perfect with Dim Sum. (1913 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 11/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Floral nose. Honeysuckle, lilac, violet, lychee, nectarine and white pepper on the nose and palate. Leads to a long, soft finish with balanced mineral notes. (1922 views)
Tasted by Yankee on 5/4/2013 & rated 90 points: On the nose there's lychee, clover honey, peach liqueur & wet stones ~ On the palate itch as an oily texture with moderate acidity & flavors of peach, stoney minerality, rose petals & under ripe pear ~ Great length, complexity & delicateness (2377 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
