Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 87 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by West Coast Wine on 11/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Still has a lot of acidity and has turned from that bright citrus it usually has young to a bit more stone fruit. A little more body and has for lack of a better description “salinity” or “ocean air” type feel. We have had this every two years since release and this is the best it’s showed since the first two times we tasted since release. (261 views)
Tasted by gestep on 9/10/2018: This is the second bottle I’ve had recently. It’s clear to me that it’s on the way down. Drink ‘em if you got ‘em!!! Hey (2202 views)
Tasted by olioli on 6/9/2018 & rated 91 points: Couleur funky jaune foncé tirant sur le vert. Presque fluo!!
Assez exotique au nez; ananas++
Bouche complexe, exotique, beau bois intégré.
Équilibré et long, mais un peu trop exotique à ce que je m'attendais.. (2265 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 8/6/2017 & rated 92 points: Meyer lemon, granny smith apple, pear and a touch of honeysuckle. Last of three bottles. Great combination between fruit and oak. Time to drink up. (2618 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Jack is Back in Town (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nice slightly sweet golden fruits, light honey butter, full bodied and nicely textured, moderate oak. 91+pts. (3497 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 1/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Pale golden color, with pungent aromas of green apple, apricot and citrus. Good balance between acidity and oak, with fruit predominating. Great balance. Long finish with complexity. Overall an excellent CA chardonnay. Plenty of life left in this, but its probably at its peak. (2984 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 11/26/2016: Second Judgment of Madrid, Still an Aficionados' Matter (Restaurante Garcia de la Navarra - Madrid): Only bottle that has repeated in the judgements.
Time has played in its favor, less angular and acid in the mouth and more mellow and floral on the nose. Still unremarkable but a better potential was appreciated.
From occupying the last position two years ago to be placed in the middle of the ranking (4th)

Tasted by galewskj on 8/21/2016 & rated 90 points: Fast Times at the Frey's: The nose is better than the palate, but the palate does improve with 30 minutes in glass. Tropical fruit, mango, bubble gum. The palate is rather flabby. (2367 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 8/20/2016 & rated 91 points: Fast Times at the Frey's: Lioght medium gold color. Drank a 2.5oz pour over 40 minutes. Drank this side by side with a '08 Kistler Durell. I've had this wine enough times now that I should be able to identify it in my sleep. The nose is tropical, though not overly so, oak and spice. The palate is tropical too, pineapple, melon, round, and some sharpness to the oak on the finish at time. I thought this was a tad flabby in the mid palate, though later I didn't notice it as much. (2133 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/18/2016 & rated 91 points: Gary's Big Wine Thingee (Gary's Place, Hudson, WI): Another good bottle of this wine. Ripe with tropical fruits, pear, melon, guava, a touch smoky, medium full bodied, oak, medium plus finish. 91+pts. (2095 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/8/2016 & rated 91 points: BYOB Night at Foreign Legion (Foreign Legion, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was good as usual, big and buttery, stone fruits, brisk minerality, a little floral, lighter oak, holding up well. Great with the creamy lobster bisque. 91+pts. (2307 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 3/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Light yellow-green hue. Citrus, lemon, tropical nose. Nice easy drinking with or without food. Butterscotch aftertaste. Yummy wine that is drinking great right now. (1548 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/15/2015 & rated 89 points: Last minute Pinot tasting (Kevin's House): Quite full bodied. Butterscotch. The nose and palate is enticing, but the finish on this bottle is rather hot. This was significantly worse than a bottle from the same source a couple weeks ago. Too bad. (2297 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/14/2015 & rated 92 points: Pinots and Few More (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was good as usual, not the powerhouse that it was 12 to 24 months ago. Still delivers well with tropical fruit, oak, apple, pineapple, peach, butter toffee. It is not quite as vibrant, and my sense though is that this has crested and is now on a slow decline. I'd drink these sooner rather that later, but I think they will satisfy for another 2 years. (2245 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Light-medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I didn't take notes on this but it was as good as always. Very well made with nice texture, good acid and nice apple fruit with crisp acidity. Love the style here. (1671 views)
Tasted by Robwild on 6/20/2015 & rated 93 points: A marvelous Chardonnay, very worthy of the Staffer name. Rich, smooth creamy and crisp (1716 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 5/11/2015 & rated 93 points: This is in a good spot right now. Light gold, just starting to show some tanning. Lemon, lime, light pineapple, orange zest nose all with a floral component. Bright and firm with nice backbone. Quite good. (1781 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 3/31/2015 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour. Tropical notes with some lemon oil and a hint of oak. Very nice. (1600 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 3/7/2015 & rated 87 points: A little oak, a little butterscotch. Was OK. I am not a chardonnay fan but have had Red Shoulder Ranch before. This was not as good as usual. (1751 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 1/10/2015 & rated 92 points: Creamy, rich, lemon and vanilla, falls somewhere between medium and full bodied; well balanced with nice cut supported by good acidity. (1780 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/19/2014 & rated 92 points: A Fine Night at La Belle Vie (La Belle Vie, Mpls): Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. A little slower to full emerge, the nose develops over 20 minutes or so. The nose has pineapple, oak, apple, and orange blossoms. The palate is full bodied, deep, apple, lemon, pineapple, tangerine, mildly buttery, oak, spices. Medium plus finish. 92+ to 93pts. Needed time to fully show. (2006 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 12/18/2014: Judgment of Madrid, time for aficionados plus a late dinner (Vila Viniteca - Madrid): In spite some opinions, I founded this bottle quite simple yet some life ahead.
Better on the palate but shortie anyway.
Suddenly little worries for my two bottles.
4th position among whites.

A pesar de ciertas opiniones, encontré está botella bastante simple aunque con algo de vida todavía.
Mejor en boca pero cortita de todas formas.
De repente alguna preocupación por mis dos botellas.
Cuarto lugar entre los vinos blancos. (2560 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 12/13/2014 & rated 91 points: Vanilla, creamy, buttery nose, super ripe yellow apple... taste is very creamy, sweet yellow apple, hint of wood tannins, hint of acidity in the finish, very modern american chardonnay! (1583 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 9/13/2014 & rated 92 points: Not as big as some CA Chardonnays, but seductive ripe lemon/lime and melon flavors, excellent minerality and nice sharp bite at the finish, which is long and expansive. This is a style I really love! (2517 views)
Tasted by Kevdog on 7/1/2014 & rated 90 points: always good. nice rich cali chard with restrained oak and good acidity for food... (1875 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
