| Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by moods on 1/27/2016 & rated 87 points: Deep ruby color, almost sanguineous. Floral notes, cherry candy. Lifted, very pure and fresh. Has a medicinal quality and some leafiness. Cabernet Franc-esque. Boldly acidic, but smoother thru the mid palate. Very juicy. (1976 views) | | Tasted by moods on 10/30/2015 & rated 87 points: Deep vibrant color, very luminous. Smells like a Beaujolais. Tastes like a Beaujolais. Actually has a nice long finish once you get past the acidic full frontal attack on the old 'buds. (2032 views) | | Tasted by moods on 11/13/2014 flawed bottle: Tinny, metallic. Flawed. (2769 views) | | Tasted by dsamuel on 10/26/2014 & rated 90 points: Medium garnet color. Moderate viscosity, intense aromatics of red fruit/ hard candy with strong vegetal/ bell pepper component. Moderate silky tannins, full in the mouth. Moderate(+)finish with good acidity. I can definitely see the previously noted comparison with cab franc, would have been my guess as well. I am getting a lot more out of this wine than previous tasters have, maybe its coming into its own now (2737 views) | | Tasted by Will Devize on 5/24/2014 & rated 88 points: Rugged yet charming and highly characterful for 10ish quid. (3210 views) | | Tasted by cse on 9/9/2013: pleasant juice, perfectly good for $12, but nothing special. (2751 views) | | Tasted by Eubulos on 6/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Another lovely alternative to the "usual" wine drinks in summer. Nice. (2920 views) | | Tasted by jpasmore on 5/22/2013 & rated 86 points: is not bad, just not that good. okay. very flavorful and rich, suppose with the right food is good, for me ok. (2299 views) | | Tasted by Julia7ich on 3/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Deep dark black purple. Cassis, cayenne pepper, pleasant leafy nuances and a hint of anis. Meium full bodied with enough juicy acidity to give this wine firm structure. Abundant medium fine-grained tannins and a grippy texture. Long, complex finish. A delightful discovery! (2488 views) | | Tasted by bevetroppo on 11/28/2012 & rated 88 points: Wow. This is awesome. I had no idea what grape it was made from, and spent a solid half hour doing mental gymnastics, finally guessing it was a blend of cab franc in a St. Nicholas de Bourgeuil style and something local, or maybe cot, ie French malbec. Turns out it's 100% fer servadou, so I don't feel so bad. Fer what? Translucent purple/red, an immediately inviting nose of dirt and pepper and shy berries that seems familiar but eludes familiar classifications. Light to medium bodied, refreshing 12.5% alcohol, a joy to quaff in a rustic, "here I am what are you going to do about it" style. No detectable wood influences. Peppery tannins but they are not aggressive. Hey, I have a great idea. I just bought a copy of the crazy Jancis Robinson Wine Grapes book. It may tell me what the deal is with this fer servadou. Let's put it to the test.
Yay! Here's some interesting facts about fer from JR: (1) it is sometimes likened to cab franc! (2) it is rich in compounds associated with fighting heart disease (3) it is a grandparent of carmenere. I may ditch my daily baby aspirin in favor of fer servadou. Right up there with the best under $15 bottles of wine I can remember. I could drink a lot of this. (3037 views) | | Tasted by ArntErik on 11/21/2012 & rated 80 points: A short note to balance the rather absurd score of 89,5 at the moment. This is a plane jane that merits no more than 80 at most. We've had three bottles of this over a period, and the impression is consistant. For the price it is probably decent, but let's face it; the predominant impression here is the typical sign of a low to medium quality wine: yeast. If you need a really cheap everday drinker you can probably do worse, but I for one consider the 6 bottles I purchased - based on that very same absurd score - a mistake. (2213 views) | | Tasted by davestenton on 8/27/2012: Lifted nose with some menthol, tobacco and blackcurrant leaf. Quite grainy tannins with some structure. Dark berry fruit on the palate but quite tart and the finish is very dry. Sappy but not as agressively green as the 2010 - nor as lush as the 2009. Ok. (2281 views) | | Tasted by Jason Millar on 8/13/2012 & rated 89 points: I have enjoyed previous vintages of this wine, particularly after a year in bottle, and the 2011 does not disappoint. Vibrant raspberry fruit that is a textbook demonstration of the tasting term 'crunchy', a slightly wild, untamed and leafy edge that brings real vibrancy, like the smell of wet forests in spring, and just a hint at this early stage of the ferrous undertow than emerges with a few more months in bottle. A delight that I think would work especially well with rare duck. (2224 views) | | Tasted by saturnaisland on 5/26/2012 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit; autumn leaf; hints of smoke and tobacco. Rustic in style but in a very good way. My guess would have been that it is cabernet franc-based, but the grape is Fer Servadou. Very nice wine; outstanding value. (2076 views) | | Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 5/20/2012: Nose - iron p - light-bodied, grippy, sappy, lots of iron/ rust. Marcillac! WOuld be great with a fatty stew. (1702 views) | | Tasted by french16 on 3/7/2012: Blind Tasting - Southwest France (My Home): Peppery nose with geranium notes and dusty cocoa. Tannic palate with a touch of iron and chocolate, raspberry and cassis. Seems to have darker fruits than the 2010 with a better structure. I really enjoyed this Marcillac. (2271 views) |
