Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rich.Herbs on 6/24/2020: I agree with JD6725's tasting note of June 11 2020. Looks good, smells good, but disjointed and lost its youth. (988 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 6/11/2020 & rated 89 points: Nose of a good white burg, taste closer to a high alcohol cali chard. Calmed down a bit after an hour in the glass but still always seemed a bit disjointed. Great golden color, but just none of that youth that I still taste in good white burgs of the same age. (1017 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 12/29/2018: 12 Days of Christmas - 2018; 12/21/2018-1/1/2019 (NYC, Vermont, Lake Placid): From the wine list at Maggie’s Pub at the Lake Placid Lodge. Excited to see a reasoanably priced bottle with some age on it on the list. Paired with tomatoe bisque and a pressed chicken and avocado sandwich for lunch. This is in a great drinking window but probably time to open these in the next few years. Starting to develop some oxidative notes of honey and nuts which we enjoyed, bit the stone fruit is a bit less primary now. We enjoyed this. (1772 views)
Tasted by unrelenting on 10/21/2018 & rated 92 points: That funk I tend to like and complex palate. light bodied. Impressive finish. My first bottle. Consume now but still peak drinking. (1362 views)
Tasted by Rich.Herbs on 5/20/2018: Mineral and fragrant with a great mouth feel, but could use a little acid. Complex enough to keep me interested all evening. Drink now for a nice focused package or perhaps wait a couple of years. (1422 views)
Tasted by aChave on 4/14/2017 & rated 91 points: Lovely white. Some Marsanne fragrance, but not 0ver done. Nice crispness and structure. Tree fruit on the nose; medium weight; focused. At peak. (1527 views)
Tasted by aChave on 3/26/2016 & rated 91 points: Very fragrant and bright with pineapple and tree fruit. Substantial wine with good body and structure -- not a light weight, but well balanced and tasty. Focused rather than flabby or broad. (1932 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 4/12/2015 & rated 90 points: Deeper yellow; whoa intense nose, butter, vanilla cream, banana, persimmon, mango, beeswax, really interesting, much less mineral than before; nice spice, sweet yellow fruit, waxy, tons of lanolin, lower acid but a nice bitter prickle adds some complexity and balance though the minerality and cut seems to be less in this bottle Than previous; very good. (2465 views)
Tasted by pgm on 4/3/2015 & rated 92 points: Rich golden color, suggests some bottle age. Floral and orange citrus, some lanolin, and strongly mineral. The mouth is packed with orange/tangerine flavors and some apricot. Not highly acidic, full bodied and rich-textured, but manages to avoid being flabby and thick. Free of any aroma or flavor that would indicate that it's over the hill, but probably should drink in the near term. Wonderful. I'd buy more if I found it for near-term drinking. (2279 views)
Tasted by marcp on 4/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Rich wine with stone fruits (apricot and peach). Nice honeyed finish. (2862 views)
Tasted by bretrooks on 3/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Quick note: Dry, lemon/stone fruit & floral notes, waxy white Rhone funk prominent upon opening but dissipating somewhat with time. Good acid and a sense of minerality, with the taut structure opening up and becoming more generous with time in the glass. Still lean but delightful by the end of the bottle, 91ish. (2422 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 9/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Yellow with a hint of green, lighter than previous bottle; beeswax, lanolin, rocky, taut, white flower, reminds me of Springtime for some reason; cream, rich, complex, pear, egg yolk, finishes with minerality and acid gives great lift like a chubby person wearing Under Armour; a little different from previous bottle but still extremely delicious; cannot recommend this enough. (3043 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 8/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Saturday Night Double Blind (Bin 75): Darker yellow almost an orange hue; not the most aromatic at first but I could find some waxy lanolin, melon, nutty macadamia or toasted almond, grilled nectarine, and a bit of honey, big and round but still great crisp quality; amazing, 92+; this really begs for food. (2447 views)
Tasted by tward on 8/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Similar notes to "Doublemagnum" (6/18/13). The nose was a bit closed in - it seemed like it really wanted to be more expressive, but it was subtle. 1/2 bottle held in refrigerator covered, unsuctioned for a couple of days held up very well (letting it warm up before drinking). A well structured wine, not simply lush fruit and spice, good acid. (2304 views)
Tasted by Rich.Herbs on 7/13/2013: A darker yellow than I expected. Good mix of elusive flowers and acidity, with a long finish. Paired successfully with fish & vegetables, this wine is for food, and demanded some attention with its complexity and mouth feel. However, I wonder about the aged look & feel - Perhaps a storage or oxidation issue, which I will resolve when I taste the next bottle. (1390 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 6/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Pale gold in color, nose of honeysuckle, meyer lemon, apricot, tutti-frutti & lightly floral. On the palate, it's lush, dense, oily, fat, with a sweet, acidic & mineral backbone that cuts right through it. The finish has great length. A very feminine but voluptuous wine. This one's got curves. Amazing effort.

Pairing: Pan Roasted Monkfish; Tarragon Scented Pea Purée, Morels, Armagnac-Black Pepper Sauce @ Le Bernardin (1833 views)
Tasted by Doblk on 5/4/2013 & rated 92 points: Rich gold color. Open a couple of hours. light nose but has a lot in it. Cream, vanilla, pear. Classic rich palate. Oaky but not overly so. Cream, orange peel, pear with well integrated acidity. Very nice viscous mouth feel. Very good with bouillabaisse. (1818 views)
Tasted by young collector on 3/6/2013 & rated 90 points: Drank this at a tasting presented by Jean-Louis Chave, who confirmed that this wine is 100% Rousanne. Drinking well, with forward fruit & excellent balance - brighter if not technically more acidic than the Hermitage blanc. Unclear whether this is a keeper - Chave professes that he "does not yet understand" this wine, one of the reasons it is presented as a Chave selection, even though the grapes are sourced from his own vinyards. (1710 views)
Tasted by SonomaWilliam on 2/22/2013 & rated 94 points: wonderful Northern Rhone white from famed JL Chave.
There is large discrepancy online over whether this is 100% Roussanne (which would be unusual)
or Marsanne with a small amount of Roussanne. (which would be more consistent with St Joseph.)

Color is a medium yellow straw
The nose & palate don't match, surprisingly, at first opening, but quickly opens up.
Initial nose thats tight, stinky cheese, but opens up quickly, though is still restrained:
Anjou pear, meyer lemon/citrus, wet stone.

Blossoms on the palate - one of the best Rhone whites I have had in a while and gets better every 5 minutes.
Wonderful texture & mouth feel, lean but expressive. White peach, kaffir lime, orange marmalade, richness and acidity in harmony.

amazing Rhone white, wish I had bought more. (1876 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Anita: Med. dark yellow; low aromatics, still get slight apricot pit, quince, yellow plum, guava; thyme, slight marmalade, rootbeer (at least the "root" part!); almond, walnut; rich viscous waxy mouthfeel, nutty, good acidity, bitter finish. Great with oily salmon and pasta. This really grew on me through dinner. Went to a white bordeaux for a bit, then had to go back. (1654 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/6/2013 & rated 90 points: Sunday Brown Bag Tasting: 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Barb's): Deep color. Aromas of citrus, mineral, pear and waxy melon notes. Rich texture with waxy fruit tones along with mineral & stone qualities. Reminds me of the Quenard Chignin Bergeron we had recently. (3375 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 7/9/2012: Below the oak is an interesting savory green herbaceous stalkiness, maybe celery stalk and some subtle white flowers--maybe honeysuckle. The RS is tactile but welcome. Apple juice concentrate a bit. Opens into an apricot almost Viognier sort of aroma. Fun wine; not earth shattering--although maybe it'll kick some ass in a year. Apparently mostly Marsanne with a bit of Roussanne. (1866 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 3/9/2012: From tank, about to be bottled. 100% Roussane. Great yellow fruit and mineral aromatics. White and yellow floral tones. Freshness of fruit on the palate with great texture and length. Nice mineral and acid on the finish. (1873 views)

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
