Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by forceberry on 12/30/2022 & rated 93 points: A more or less naturalist Chardonnay made from very ripe grapes, often partially botrytized. The fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, they are slow and long (up to 24 months), the wines might not always ferment to complete dryness and the wines are released only when the producer deems them ready. 14% alcohol.

Pale golden yellow with faint lime-green highlights. The nose feels expressive and fragrant with an immediate smack of perfumed floral character and slightly honeyed tones of botrytis, some exotic notes of pineapple, a little bit of cantaloupe, light mineral notes of chalk dust, a hint of candied ginger and a touch of marzipan or almond paste. The wine is broad, rich and somewhat concentrated on the palate yet at the same time surprisingly firm with a good streak of acidity and a medium-to-moderately full body. There are dry to slightly off-dry flavors of ripe Golden Delicious apple and cantaloupe, some stony mineral notes, a little bit of greengage, light tropical notes of pineapple, a hint of savory wood spice and a fragrant touch of toasted exotic spices. The high acidity lends great sense of freshness and structure to the wine, even if it feels quite weighty and substantial. The finish is long, lively and complex with a layered, dry aftertaste of fresh pineapple and ripe apricot, some crunchy notes of spicy red apple, light creamy notes of oak, a hint of cantaloupe and a touch of savory wood spice.

A big, concentrated and quite distinctive Viré-Clessé that is remarkably youthful for its age at 15 years, showing surprisingly little development - if any at all. True to the singular style of the house, the wine is super-ripe and rather exotic in nature, yet it doesn't feel one bit heavy, ponderous or overdone at any point. Many commented how surprisingly airy and precise the wine turned out to be, because the nose made people expect something heavier. One of the attendees in the tasting said the wine feels an awful lot like Bongran's Viré-Clessé Cuvée Thevenet, making him wonder if the wine is actually that one. Right on spot. All in all, this is an excellent and very idiosyncratic white Burgundy that is drinking really well right now, but can evolve and improve for years more. A bargain at 21,50€. (854 views)
Tasted by Wine MOB on 10/5/2021 & rated 92 points: Massive richness. From magnum enjoyed over 2 days under Corvin. Deep Golden color, baked apple, apricots, roasted pineapple, white flowers flow from this wine. This wine has the richness and body of a great Meursault premier cru. The one criticism is that it is loaded up front and don’t follow through on the finish. (1147 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 5/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep yellow colour in the glass. Delicious wine with bags of rich fruit. (1524 views)
Tasted by vulgar little monkey on 12/22/2019 & rated 93 points: The kind of funky tropical notes you would expect from this wine, but not heavy at all. In fact, those notes are just a part of the wine which is more about deep yellow fruit, flowers, herbs and minerals. Great mouthfeel. (1750 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 9/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Some nice Burgs (and a few others): A little tropical, rich but with nice acidity, lovely. It just gets more explosive and intense with air, and is world-class by the end of the night. (2463 views)
Tasted by BuzzzzOff on 3/9/2018 & rated 90 points: We never have tried, but we were very impressed with this luvly. By the glass pairing at RyuGin, Taipei. (2616 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 5/19/2017 & rated 87 points: 14% Alc; mid yellow-gold
Clear evolution with honey, lemsip, damp chalk in a tupperware and wet earth. Seems more developed than expected for 2007; there is a caramel edge that I disliked.
The entry was better with softer edges; mineral, ripe lemon peel, pineapple rings, baked apple with runny honey. There is a lively acid to keep the wine moving and a core of juicy lemon honey.
The palate is undoubtedly better than the nose but deteriorating nevertheless. (529 views)
Tasted by annrai on 4/30/2017: Excellent. Like a puligny. (2440 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 4/3/2017 & rated 90 points: Another enjoyable bottle of Viré Clessé. It has notes of marzipan, tropical fruit, lychees nut which is balanced by acidity. It has a medium finish. I would drink these soon. (1814 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 8/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Really nice viré clessé with notes of pear, marzipan and other tropical fruits. (1758 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 5/30/2016 & rated 91 points: Very interesting late harvest style Maçon blanc with notes of pear, tropical fruits, marzipan (although a dry wine) and good acidity. (1409 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 9/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Dressner Wines Young and Old(er) (Le Caveau, Chamblee, GA): Deep nuanced fruit, a little botrytis, rocks, and crisp acid, other Chardonnays dream of being this good. (2033 views)
Tasted by johneagle on 5/18/2015 & rated 91 points: Very good indeed. Biggish lunch so no notes taken. Will last a while yet (1578 views)
Tasted by johneagle on 5/1/2015 & rated 91 points: I was expecting good things and wasnt disappointed. Lovely, clean fresh flavours, some citrus - I think this has a way to go yet (1579 views)

Tasted by moko on 1/31/2015 & rated 91 points: Excellent bourgogne avec des accents prononcés de miel et abricots. Rond en bouche, excellent!!! (1203 views)
Tasted by mystycreek on 12/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Pale straw color. Popcorn, honey, lemon, grapefruit, and baked bread. Mind-blowing Vire-Clesse, no saltiness of Macon whites, very round and sophisticated. Bongran's style deserves its reputation. (1866 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/8/2014: Not quite as huge and massive as I was lead to expect. Vintage? (1679 views)
Tasted by poste244 on 7/14/2014 & rated 88 points: Le 2006 bu il y a quelques mois m'avait épaté. (1458 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 6/10/2014: Grands Jours de Bourgogne 2014 Day 3: Macon, Beaune, Hautes Cotes 3-9-14: Was called "Viré Clessé Bongran" in the list. Far less metallic vs a 1/2 bottle tasted the other night at a Beaune restaurant. Palate is watery, roundness and finishes with a geranium-inflected metal. (2557 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/14/2014 & rated 88 points: Some More Wine with Meals in Burgundy; 5/11/2014-5/19/2014 (Burgundy): Ripe apricot with a slightly caramelized character and more than hints of sweetness. Good concentration for its price and level. These wines have their own unique style, which will surprise anybody thinking they are about to drink a typical Viré-Clessé, but I truly enjoy at the right time and place. (2164 views)
Tasted by Oh Dae-su on 10/19/2012 & rated 88 points: A lot of body, astounding dark yellow colour (almost some imaginary red'ish reflexes), rather rustic and not too complex, pretty spicy, loads of ripe lemons and a few egg shells, fine oak, goes down the gullet like nothing, good bargain for apporx 11 Euros (1353 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 6/29/2012 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly rich, without normal acidic profiel of a Vire. Mersault likw in its burnt sugar and caramel nose, fairly viscous and sweet scents of vanilla, burnt caramel and citrus. Very well made. From a 375 at London restaurant. (2173 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
