 Tasted by Ron Slye on 7/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Amazing and a treat to drink. After an hour or so open the nose exploded with tropical fruits. Passion fruit, candied pineapple. The same on the palate with tarragon and née plastic which was a positive and not a negative. Very intellectual. Lots of new flavors unfolding. We sat around sniffing and sipping and calling out new flavors. And as others have noted a very very light straw color. Superb. Glad I have one more. (1107 views)

Petrol, pineapple, mineral and unctuous lemony notes on the nose, with fruit and minerality carrying through to the palate. Gorgeous, clear straw color in the glass. Nice acidity balances the sweetness. Definitely better with food to balance the residual sugar here, but quite nice on its own. (1284 views)
 Tasted by Fugu Me on 11/26/2017: PnP. Petrol and pineapple on the nose, the palate carries those through, but adds guava, car wax and stone fruit. Acidity helps this along and makes it a nice pairing to mildly spicy Indian fish curry. (2078 views)

Low alcohol (8%) and has enough traces of introgue and quality to make it enjoyable as appero. We appreciated with some fois gras and it was good pairing.  Tasted by f22nickell on 10/2/2014 & rated 92 points: Very nice! The nose showed talc, diesel, minerals, and many other elements. This was a wonderful, classic German Riesling nose. The palate was thick and lush with nice depth, sweet, tropical fruit, powdered sugar, and lemon bars. Nice and complex, yet it still stayed up front in the mouth. Balanced finish, enough acid to leave you wanting another sip. Excellent wine, and drinking much younger than expected. (1765 views)
 Tasted by WestbyGod on 4/28/2014 & rated 86 points: Night 1 - PnP. As with prior bottle, cork was moldy at the top, but no impact on the wine.

Muted nose. Very sweet/syrupy with hints of tropical fruit on the palate. Very full mouth feel with little acid and short finish. Can't say I enjoyed this very much and thought wine was better last year.

Night 2 after storing in fridge - Much better as the syrupy sweetness substantially dissipated resulting in a much more interesting wine.

Night 3 after storing in fridge - A slight drop off from night 2, but still much more interesting than night 1. (1965 views)
 Tasted by boogie96 on 11/30/2013 & rated 87 points: Not much on the nose for this guy, some musky oak, but that's about it. - Very sweet, fruit forward wine. Lots of tree fruit, heavy on the apple. Had a bit of a sweet/syrupy aftertaste that I didn't necessarily dig. Didn't ruin it for me, I just prefer my Riesling's more on the dry side. (2141 views)

Nothing on the nose. Pretty sweet with hints of petrol and tropical fruit on the palate. Nice mouth feel, although little acid, with short/medium finish.

 Tasted by wineberg on 5/10/2013 flawed bottle: Bottle 3 of 6 from Full Pull. Bad bottle. The cork on this was soaked through with a nice ring of mold around the top where the cork met the bottle. Looked like there was some growth throughout the cork.

Somewhat drinkable, but everything I remember from the last bottle is totally muted...I'd call this one a dead bottle. (2541 views)
 Tasted by Redrunners on 5/1/2013 & rated 88 points: Originally had with thai food, which should be a good match. However, found it a little too sweet.

Mild petrol, with apple, pineapple and tropical fruits. Nice creamy fruit, but not enough acid to balance it out.

Got better over the next few days. Enjoyed the bottle, but wasn't blown away. Will drink my other bottles, but enjoy other rieslings better for the money. (2023 views)

I like this bottle of '97 better than the one I had at Thanksgiving...this one seems more full and rich, and I get really nicely developed fruit, green apple, apricot, mango, and I swear a hint of chamomile mint tea, with the petrol in a supporting role...I remember the previous bottle as petrol dominant.

I did jump this up a couple points, this bottle was better. (2855 views)
 Tasted by Champagneinhand on 1/9/2013: This bottle was much better than the last. Less serious petrol, but what was there was pleasant. Fruit of apples and white peaches, white florals mixed as the petrol lifted and the residual sugar had blended nicely with the mineral and tangerine acidity. Great bottle! (2413 views)
 Tasted by S1 on 12/30/2012: The nose shows nice petrol notes with full aromas of baked apple and tropical fruits. There's a creamy mouthfeel and great sweetness, but lacking a bit in acidity. Still an enjoyable bottle. (2195 views)

Simple and straightforward, was great with turkey, and I was thinking it would be awesome with pork as well. Seems to be drinking well now, and has plenty of life left to it. (1886 views)

 Tasted by Paul S on 4/15/2011 & rated 91 points: Impromptu tasting of C.H. Berres' Urziger Wurzgarten Rieslings (Beautiful Wines, The Plaza): I really liked this. The nose wad not the strongest point on the wine unfortunately. It would probably be best described as "challenging". Full of diesel, some pungent jackfruit notes, some orange tangerine, but beyond that, it was just hard to get past the fumey diesel scents. It was on the palate that the wine really shone. Rich, sweet, a bit less taut compared to the 1994, but there was a whole lot more depth, with delicious stone fruit flavours wed to juicy acid and steely mineral and, finally, a lovely mouthfull of spice at the long finish. A really nice wine, still in a bit of an awkward adolescent stage, but it should be drinking very well with a few more years under its belt. (2938 views)

"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Mosel Saar Ruwer

Starting in 2007 the German wine authorities have changed labeling laws to rename all of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines to just "Mosel." This puts this and other database driven sites in a difficult spot, as millions of old wine label reflect the former labeling. As described here, CellarTracker has elected to remain with the old labeling for a number of years to avoid confusion. At some point we will switch over to just "Mosel" but not for a few years at least.

#2018 Vintage Notes:
"Acid levels are relatively low throughout Riesling-growing Europe (acidification will once again be permitted in Germany – no surprise, as that’s been the case in eight of the last 10 vintages); but because malic acid was baked off or degraded by relentlessly balmy weather means, what acid remains is overwhelmingly of the efficacious tartaric sort. Extract levels are low, as one would anticipate from a growing season during which relatively little moisture was coursing through the vine’s roots and shoots. [...] Everyone is astonished how there could have been so much juice despite the drought." - David Schildknecht
"2018 is a homogenous vintage with a very high general level, below which it seldom falls [...] It leads with blossom. It is perhaps 80% delicious and 20% fascinating." - Terry Theise

#2016 Vintage Notes: "Overall, 2016 is a charmer of a vintage with much immediate ripe and fruity appeal, not unlike 2011 (in fresher) or 2007 (in lighter). However, 2016 is far from being homogeneous, in fact it is composed of a mosaic of vintages, a result of the freakish growing conditions. Hidden inside the vintage, there are true gems with the balance of 1997, one of the best vintages ever, 2002 or even 2008. The bulk of the harvest was brought in with refreshingly moderate sugar levels. Overall, the Saar and Ruwer produced slightly fresher wines than the Middle Mosel but there are great differences between Estates. The good harvest conditions allowed for some Auslese, little BA and even TBA wines, but some remarkably pure and fruity Eiswein.
In general, 2016 offers the opportunity to acquire Riesling with great immediate ripe appeal: The vintage is a true charmer. At the top, 2016 is one of the most exciting and elegantly balanced vintage since the 1990s and well-worth stocking up for cellaring! In particular, we urge our readers to literally plunge onto the finest Kabinett and Spätlese: These are some of the most exciting and classic we have ever tasted. 2016 looks also set to become a major vintage for dry Riesling, provided the aromatics are not overripe. Lovers of dessert wines will find much to love in 2016 as the Auslese are pure and the Eiswein are gorgeously fruity. They should however also keep an eye open for the remaining stunning noble-sweet wines from 2015 which are still available here and there." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 36, July 2017

"The heterogeneity of the 2014 vintage carries over onto the aging process. The top wines start to close down, as one would expect from these wines which are a remake of those from the 1990s. The wines affected by gin, saffron and mushroom flavors are still comparatively open and offer a not unattractive Scheurebe styled fruit opulence. We would opt to drink up these lesser wines except for the odd bottle and bury the little treasures of the vintage deep into the cellar." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 30, March 2016

#2013 Vintage Notes:
"The fruity-styled 2013 wines have firmed up significantly since last year and start to show signs of closing down, making the underlying acidity seemingly sharp and out of balance. The better dry wines have come out of their early armor of smoke and tannin but the acidity may prove quite challenging. Quite frankly, except for some smaller bottlings, this is a vintage to lay down and wait." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2012 Vintage Notes:
"The 2012 wines have put on some flesh and go through a 'fattier' phase which is not unlike what the 2007 went through at the same period. However, the zestier acidity cuts through this 'weight' and makes the wines thoroughly enjoyable at this early stage. In particular the fruity Kabinett and Spatlese as well as the off-dry and dry wines offer much pleasure. We expect these wines to close down over the coming year or two. #2011 Vintage Notes:
"A bit to our surprise, the 2011 wines have shut down and go through a quite difficult and muted phase now. Their low acidity combined with their maturity makes them feel rich, opulent and often bulky, and thus not really enjoyable. We expect that these will need at least a decade to integrate their sweetness and gain in harmony. The only exception is the dry wines, whose low acidity makes for great food companionship." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2010 Vintage Notes:
"After a mellower period in 2012, many 2010 wines have firmed up and developed a stronger smoky side. However, most continue to shine through their fruit opulence, structure and deliciously zesty but ripe acidity. This suits in particular the off-dry bottlings, which have more charm than the legally dry wines. Will these wines close down? Actually, the softening acidity makes us wonder now but it also provides further evidence that these wines will turn out harmonious after all." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2009 Vintage Notes:
"Most 2009 wines have closed down, which accentuates their round and soft side forward. Many can still be quite enjoyable but the times of primary fruit with its attractive aromatic expression and a generous acidic kick are now over. Except for the dry wines, we would definitely recommend keeping your hands off any bottle in your cellar and possibly buying more wines from this vintage on the market as these are true gems in the making." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015
