Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sonoffalstaff on 7/26/2020 & rated 92 points: It can be seen there is a range of views on the wine. Mine is on the positive but I do like richness in Alsace and I found huge complexity. Greeny gold colour with a spicy nose ( hints of Gewurtz as well as the honied fruit. Super long lasting taste with minerals and citrus, demi sec as described but with enough acidity and the classic drying finish. I agree there is also a touch of herbs. The wine would benefit from decanting (451 views)
Tasted by Mazy on 11/2/2017 & rated 87 points: Bien mais un peu lourd, un peu trop riche à mon goût. Pas la complexité souhaitée... (1026 views)
Tasted by pezscott on 2/14/2016 & rated 92 points: This is the score after it opened. Perfect with chicken and truffles after being open 45 mins. Demi-sec style, almost like a spatlese. Full and rich on the palate. Maybe a hint of something on the finish less stylish, but overall a very nice wine. (1126 views)
Tasted by C.W. on 8/16/2015: Nose was gorgeous, with tropical fruit, floral and honey aromas. Full-bodied and sweet, almost syrupy. Don't mean to use a cliched term but "unctuous" was the first thing that came to mind. It seemed well-made, but personally I would've preferred more acidity on the palate. (1055 views)
(1348 views)
Tasted by kurishin on 6/1/2015 & rated 87 points: "Quaffable but far from transcendant." (704 views)

Pinot Gris

From Pinot Gris Wikipedia entry:
Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.

Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.

Altenbourg

The lieu-dit Altenburg is located between 220 and 300 m of altitude, gently sloping, just below the lower boundary of the Grand Cru Furstentum.

Its soils are marl-calcaro-sandstone, comparable to those of the Furstentum, with a higher proportion of sand and a slightly earlier maturation. The Altenburg promotes great ripeness, it produces very beautiful Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.

The deep, clay-limestone soils of this Kientzheim hill are recognized geologically and empirically as being very favorable to Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.

The lowest part of this hill gives birth to the Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence.
