Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 244 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Snag One on 5/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Soft tannins and balanced acidity make way for layers of blackberry, dried fig, plums, cocoa, mint and cedar. Nice wine with a long enjoyable finish. I'm surprised it's held up this long in the cellar, but it really has improved with age. (2021 views)
Tasted by Barry Raterink on 12/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Wine was very good once it opened up. Plenty of dark fruit and depth. (2029 views)
Tasted by cbrachfeld on 7/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Sad that this is our last bottle, as this has finally come into its own. The slightly jammy quality noted before has been replaced by a density that complements the dark notes and hints of coffee in the midpalate through to the finish. Delicious. (2122 views)
Tasted by Endodr on 2/22/2020 & rated 88 points: Dark purple color with lots of ripe fruit and spice. Medium to full bodied. It still has grippy tannins. This wiine is not the most complex or balanced, but it’s a real crowd pleaser. (2449 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 12/17/2019 & rated 90 points: A nose of dark fruits and spices, dark purple in color. A full bodied red blend, with blackberry, black cherry, some cocoa and spice on finish. As most Orin Swift wines, a very interesting label. www.winelx.com (2606 views)
Tasted by Yakima Mike on 5/5/2019: Dark berry fruit on the nose. Rich, full-body wine wither good mid palate viscosity and long finish. Great now but should hold another2-3 years (2170 views)
Tasted by Eslotnick.es@gmail.com on 4/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Wow this was wonderful--with marinated grilled flank steak. Almost black when decanted, full pungent nose, silky smooth on the palette, full of lucious fruit, still holding it's tannins. A bit more subtle than the Prisoner Wish we had more... (1953 views)
Tasted by Phae on 3/10/2019: Decanted about 2 hours before it really started to shine. I did get impatient and tried it early, and it was still a little closed off before that. Nice creamy vanilla overtones once I let it open up, with balanced fruit and pleasant tannins. However, I’m not convinced it would hold much longer than this. (1891 views)
Tasted by Mark V on 9/1/2018 & rated 89 points: An ok blend but really purchased for the label (2196 views)
Tasted by blabbott on 8/16/2018 & rated 92 points: Original description still works. And it is still tasting fresh and delicious. (2069 views)
Tasted by Eslotnick.es@gmail.com on 8/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Fabulous wine paired with filet mignon. Deep, deep garnet ruby color, strong berry nose, silky smooth and balanced. Very, very good! (1651 views)
Tasted by pauldenisarcher on 5/6/2018 & rated 92 points: Excellent ! (2041 views)
Tasted by The Wine Dude on 4/19/2018 flawed bottle: I drank wine due to seeing leakage from capsule. Once capsule was open and cork released I saw no evidence of leakage from cork. Wine looked dark red to medium blackberry. Wine was not oxidized and had a nose expected of this vintage. (1087 views)
Tasted by Endodr on 4/5/2018 & rated 89 points: Big and bold with ripe, juicy black and blue fruit. Medium bodied, peppery tannins, with a moderate finish. Highly recommended. (2166 views)
Tasted by ejmwine on 3/8/2018 & rated 90 points: Used the Venutri twice on it to mellow it out so I could taste the fruit. Tannins where obvious without it. Obviously needs more time. (1809 views)
Tasted by candyman on 1/27/2018: decanted 3 hours before serving with beef drank very pleasantly (1805 views)
Tasted by ptconner on 11/27/2017 & rated 89 points: Big boozy and rich. If you still have this vintage I think it's time to drink up as this one was not quite as good as my last. (2135 views)
Tasted by bjamesclark on 2/22/2017 & rated 89 points: Decanted.
Big and rich aromas show a fruit ladden nose with a baked plum, blackberry compote and fig preserves that shows notes of black licorice, imperial stout, dark chocolate and vanilla with hints of sarsaparilla, herbs and chaparral that show the heat of the high ABV.
Massive and dense on the palate. The tannins are ripe and smooth, almost easy, while the acidity remains moderate. Flavors of fig and black licorice mix with blackberry jam, plum, sage, vanilla, chocolate, espresso and barrel aged stout. The finish lingers with density.
Overall big and boozy built for fans of this style. (3559 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 1/22/2017: No notes. In a really good place. (3457 views)
Tasted by sirfrancisdrake on 12/20/2016 & rated 93 points: Scent of vanilla and blackberries. Dark and fruity, medium body. Although a Rhone blend this tastes like a New World wine all the way. (3703 views)
Tasted by ashikoh on 11/21/2016 & rated 83 points: Opaque inky purple color. Viscous with prominent tearing. Initially alcohol prominent on the nose but as this blows off there are aromas of black cherry, raspberry, plum, vanilla, and a more subtle gamey note. Full bodied and jammy on the palate with sweet, juicy, dark fruit and a hot alcoholic finish coming in at 15.7%. Rhône style blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah sourced from Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Amador, and El Dorado counties. (3764 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 11/13/2016 & rated 91 points: As if it was new....holding up quite well. Still fat and full of fruit. No secondary development as of yet. Just lost of jammyness, spice, vanilla and great balance for the fat under the hood. Impressive if you like full throttle....Drink or Hold (3839 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 10/6/2016: PnP. Easy drink, slightly rough edges (though I think the wine is at its peak), earthiness of Grenache and Petit Sirah dominate the profile of this wine along with a hint of tobacco, I did not pick up jamminess, though the wine leans to the sweeter side. Medium bouquet, medium+ body. It was enjoyable and very drinkable, did not find anything particularly memorable. 90+ (2098 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 8/25/2016 & rated 91 points: I would not have thought this was a Rhone style wine, but I liked it. Very drinkable without food. Nicely balanced earthy taste with rich lingering taste. (2256 views)
Tasted by MrOctoberfest on 7/17/2016: Opened this after the Vallana Bernardo was finished. The differences were drastic. This was an overextracted fruit bomb with all the subtlety and nuance of an AC/DC concert. The fruit was good and there was plenty of it, but there was little acid to temper the fruit, and it felt unbalanced compared to the Spanna. If you like big new world fruit driven wines, you should love this. I enjoyed it too, but it was definitely heavy handed. (2529 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
