Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by merryberry on 4/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby. Warm blueberry compote, baking spices, and vanilla nose. Medium bodied, blackberries, milk chocolate cherries, well integrated tannins, sage, black olives, and a slightly hot red-fruited medium length finish. Didn't really open up until night 2, but it was worth the wait. (1793 views)
Tasted by David_T on 7/19/2015 & rated 91 points: Drinking well now with a bit of air but still young overall, a nice Bdx blend that shows what malbec can contribute. A pleasant mix of red fruit particularly red cherry along with a bit of cocoa, earth and spice. Light oak influence, balanced and smooth on the palate with medium acidity/tannins/finish. Should age at least through its 10th birthday. (3231 views)
Tasted by Red Wine Johnny on 3/7/2014 & rated 92 points: We received this as part of our wine membership. We have always had great wines from Keating and couldn't wait to give it a try. All things being equal, I couldn't ask for a better blend than this. Once again Keating has made an awesome wine, this time a blend. (3294 views)

Keating

Producer website

Keating Wines is an ultra-premium, small production winery specializing in, but not limited to, Bordeaux varieties. Keating Wines was founded in 2006 and is located at 23564 Arnold Drive at the Cornerstone Gardens in the Carneros region of Sonoma County.
Annual production is roughly 1,200 cases. The goal of Keating Wines is to only buy fruit from quality, high-demand vineyards. Combining that with top notch wine making practices and a barrel program using appropriate amounts of new French Oak will lead
to consistent, flavorful, balanced, and structured wines.
Wine releases (some yet to be released) include Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 'Montecillo' Cabernet Sauvignon, Encomium series, Rockpile Malbec, Rockpile Petite Sirah, Sonoma Valley Merlot, Sonoma Valley Zinfandel, Dry Creek Zinfandel.
"Wine made for one purpose -- for every glass to be appreciated, savored, and remembered."
Cheers!
Eric Keating

2011 Keating Finvarra

Winemaker Notes:
As much as I love California wines, sometimes you just can't beat a nice Bordeaux. I have always known I would make a Bordeaux Blend, and what better year to begin than 2011, the coolest year in recent memory.
After countless blending trials, we came up with a blend mainly consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), complimented by Malbec (26%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). All fruit coming from vineyards in Sonoma and
Napa, hence the 'North Coast' appellation. About the name -- In Irish folklore, Finvarra, High King of the Daoine Sidhe (pronounced Donna-Shay), is a benevolent figure who ensures good harvests, strong horses,
and great riches to those who assist him. My 12-year old niece, Caitlin Keating, created the label and will be producing a new version every year.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
