Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by TahoeSki on 10/8/2021: No notes as posting at least a month later, but this was drinking very well, and we greatly enjoyed. I was worried given age and Napa (and none of the 82 and 85s left I have are drinking great), but we were really impressed how this has held up. Noticed the alcohol %. Score would probably have been in low 90s. (824 views)
Tasted by jviz on 11/17/2018 & rated 92 points: WineBid bottle. Capsule was basically welded to the bottle and cork, and the line on the cork was very high on this mid-shoulder fill. I was worries about provenance/storage, but my tasting buddies (who have lots of experience with older wines) assured me there was nothing wrong with the bottle

The notes below ascribing vibrancy and liveliness to this wine are in line with my experience. Nose showed some scorched earth and burned rubber, even a little petrol. The palate had dried maraschino cherry, blackberry, and tar with really nice supporting acidity. There are still a few tannins hanging around, too. All in all a nice wine. Not my favorite aroma, but when you account for the remaining verve, it’s a good bottle. Drink now and buy with confidence over the next 5 years if it’s a decent bottle. it’s not like there are many people holding these for peak maturity. (1942 views)
Tasted by Blackacre on 7/13/2018: Dark cherry color no watery rim
Smooth mouth feel
Well rounded (1774 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 4/28/2017: A very Bordeaux-esque nose. Dark cherry. Earth

Mouth - lively at 30 yrs of age. Singing in fact. Lovely and great fruited, almost liquereqsue. Slightly tarry in fact. Slow to come around appreciating this but wow. Blinded I might have guessed barolo (2643 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 1/5/2014 & rated 95 points: Terrific full bodied lively older CA Cabernet (3934 views)
Tasted by Gargamel on 11/12/2011 & rated 94 points: decanted for 30 minutes. the palate is beautifull and super soft. the palate a base of plum with cherry, caramel, espresso, leather, earth with a dark minerality. lots of different nuances peaking through. the nose is a bit weaker and has a light mineral cherry. the finish is smooth a fairly long, around 30 seconds or more. not a hint of heat. seemed to reach it's peak at about 90 minutes of air and showed no decline in the glass. this wine seems like it is holding at its peak, although i don't know how long it can hold on. nose-90, palate-96, finish-91 (4258 views)
Tasted by hkm520240 on 3/24/2010 & rated 90 points: It was brought to a company dinner and decanted for more 1+ hours before serving. Deep ruby red with nice rims, still not showing its aged (or maybe the light is dim). It has a bouquet of leather, mushroom, cassis and subtle oak. Smooth, soft and elegant on palate, with cassis and earthy character. It is a wine with finesse, medium bodied with fine grain tannins and long finishing. Well liked by my dining partners. Drink now. Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
