Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by PSPatrick on 3/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Bottle and cork in good condition. Medium golden colour. Dried yellow fruit, physalis, lime peel, beeswax, wet wool, Macadamia nuts, a light spice component, and stony and salty minerality, with good acidity, an oily texture, and good length. Lightly oxidative. Orange- and lime-zest like bitterness on the finish. Drink now. (621 views)
Tasted by DominikMueller on 1/14/2023 & rated 91 points: A cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Clear appearance. Deep, golden yellow colour. On the nose matured notes of dried oranges, crème brûlée with caramelized sugar, malty, elderberry. But also a slight freshness with physalis. A medium body. On the palate, an impression of oloroso sherry, again physalis and an acidity that does not last too long, but comes across as surprisingly fresh. Passion fruit. A slight bitterness at the end. I was really pleasantly surprised by this storable white wine, which is not only drinkable but very tasty with food. Still, it has undoubtedly passed the optimal drinking window. So, if there are still bottles in the cellar, drink up now. Rated 91 points. (529 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 1/14/2023 & rated 90 points: 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind in a 1996-themed tasting.

Pale to medium-deep lemon-yellow color. At first the nose feels very perfumed with pronounced floral aromas - however these qualities disappear very quickly, making room for more restrained aromas of birch leaves, some lemony tones, a little bit of crunchy Granny Smith apple, light aldehydic notes of green almonds and a developed hint of cooked cream. The wine feels dry, structured and slightly viscous on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and somewhat concentrated flavors of lemony citrus fruits and steely minerality, some tangy saline tones, a little bit of developed creamy character, light aldehydic notes of green almonds, a sharp hint of tart Granny Smith apple and a mineral touch of wet rocks. The high acidity lends great intensity and sense of structure to the wine. The finish is dry and somewhat evolved yet refreshing with flavors of steely minerality and lemony citrus fruit, some aldehydic notes of green almonds, a little bit of tangy salinity, light oxidative notes of chopped nuts and a vaguely green hint of birch leaves.

A lovely, sophisticated and pleasantly evolved Bordeaux Blanc. My guess was an Alsatian Riesling that had developed some aldehydic green qualities with age, but it's possible that those leafy notes weren't actually aged nuances but instead just varietally correct Sauvignon Blanc notes. All in all, this was a quite enjoyable effort and otherwise not too aged, apart from those aldehydic nuances - which might suggest the wine really isn't built to last for much longer. Good stuff, but nothing thrilling. (1038 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 11/18/2022 & rated 90 points: Bottle in very good condition. Medium golden colour. Yellow fruit, physalis, lemon zest, lime, beeswax, a wooly note, Macadamia nuts, a mild spice component, and light oxidative character, all build on a base of stony and lightly salty minerality, with good acidity and good length. Good body and concentration, with a smooth, oily texture. Pairs well with food. Drink now. (750 views)
Tasted by Akatz821 on 4/8/2022 & rated 90 points: This is still going! Won’t get any better, and probably was better in the past but now we’re talking a pretty high level of acidity and a slightly oxidative nutty situation.
Birch wood, grapefruit peel, lightly toasted macadamia nuts, limestone (713 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 11/15/2014 & rated 88 points: I am afraid that we got to this one just a little too late. Still good, but with a bit more oxidization than I prefer -- and I prefer more than the norm. Nevertheless, there was some solid fruit underneath it all to provide a hint at what once was.
Drink up! ASAP (4424 views)
Tasted by rexmerlot on 11/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Slightly cloudy golden yelllow in colour. Nose of honey, macintosh apple, and some funkiness. Dry, med acidity, med body, honey, apple, and gooseberry on palate. Not much length. Paired wine with a stir fry and it was a great paring. Scored as high as I did because of how well it was drinking for its age. It is definitely at the end of its life. If you have some drink it now. It won't be getting any better. (5100 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 5/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Left Bank Bordeaux Group Tasting (Chez Matt et Reema): Very funky, racy and fresh. So youthful, based on cork condition this has a long road ahead.
Mangosteens, star fruit, wet stones, sous bois, gooseberry, scorched earth, minerals.
Not sure what % the blend is but probably more sauv blanc than semillon. Mixed reception to this one from the group but I was a big fan of this. One of the group members noted this drinks like Smith Haut Laffite of same vintage. (6461 views)
Tasted by -E- on 5/3/2013 flawed bottle: La Lagune vertikal: (Blind) Klar mørk gyllen gul. Sherry og oksiderte epler.Oksydert (6340 views)
Tasted by Thomas D. on 7/3/2012 & rated 88 points: Wow, first a full range yellow exotic fruit range, my girlfriend really doubted that this wine is that old.
Later more chocolate and coffee and more "flat" with every minute.
Still a great wine. (3825 views)
Tasted by easonwannabe on 3/12/2012 & rated 80 points: This bottle is beyond its prime. Opened up and smelled a little fruity but tasted nothing like it. Very Dry and really had no real palatte (3206 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 12/13/2011: Christmas WIMPS (Bordeaux Table) (The Ledbury, London.): Quite a full gold, evolved colour. Slightly oxidative nose, wax and lanolin. Nice weight on palate. Very smooth, rounded and quite weighty. Not much complexity, but quite engaging. *** (3659 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 5/18/2010 & rated 87 points: Shannon's Birthday Dinner (The Fountain (Four Seasons, Philadelphia)): Past its prime, but still an enjoyable bottle. Showing signs of oxidation. Lemony citrus on nose with sherry like character. This exhibited a good amount of smoke, charcoal and molasses on the palate. This mellowed after some time in the glass and developed a nice butterscotch note. I've never had an aged dry white Bordeaux. I quite enjoyed this, though the sherry quality was a little overpowering at times. This was not flawed, but it is beyond its ideal drinking window if you are looking for something brighter with more citrus and minerals. Neverthless, I see this continuing to mellow in the next few years and it should continue to drink well. (3716 views)
Tasted by mmh on 4/1/2010 & rated 90 points: Really complex nose with some gunpowder, herbs, fruit and straw. Full bodied oaky and fruity taste. Very good and multilayered. (3657 views)
Tasted by Benj on 2/18/2010 flawed bottle: My 2nd trip to The Sampler (The Sampler, London): This *must* have been flawed. I have experienced this exact aroma and flavour setup several times in different types of white wines and cannot believe anyone would make this intentionally. Smells overpoweringly of molasses / liquorice hiding some nice sweet fruit. This liquorice-y note continues to the palate, it *feels* oxidised, and tastes a little sherry-like. Very acidic, quite thin. (3763 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/13/2010 & rated 90 points: WIML90

Tasted January 13, 2010 at an offline. Opened and served immediately. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of sulphur, gooseberry, a bit of fertilizer and some floral notes. Flavors of tangy lime and tangerine. Medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink now.

Lizzy says hot damn. (3202 views)
Tasted by MHildbold on 5/19/2009 flawed bottle: I have never encountered a wine that smelled and tasted like potatoes, but this one did. (3336 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 8/13/2008 & rated 89 points: WIML89

Tasted August 13, 2008 at an offline.

Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of peach core. Flavors of apple cider and peaches. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink now. (3283 views)
 Tasted by wineismylife on 3/12/2008 & rated 90 points: Dallas 2nd Wednesday - March 2008 (Lola's, Dallas, TX): WIML90

Tasted March 12, 2008. Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of diesel, orange, acacia flower and wet stones. Flavors of orange, pineapple and grapefruit. Medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink now. (5295 views)
Tasted by JamesSanders on 11/25/2007: Slightly maderized note on the nose and some browning beginning to show. Still had plenty fruit, however, to go along with the secondary flavors. Still quite nice. (3442 views)
Tasted by Metis on 11/22/2007 & rated 88 points: Going over the limit. Drink it now. Nice body but nose fading. (3640 views)
Tasted by RMC on 8/25/2007 & rated 89 points: Did not think this one would still improve with aging but it did. I expected an over the edge wine, but intead I got a well structured, full bodied wine with a nose of grapfruit and dried fruit. Dont'expect it to improve even more - this wine has reached a plateau. (3697 views)
Tasted by JLeader on 5/6/2007 & rated 88 points: Pleasant but not showing much character yet. Needs more time. (3936 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 5/22/2004 & rated 90 points: Consumed at the Roche Cayucos home. Bottle provided by Amy Weinberg. Bright disc. Medium yellow-gold robe with clear rim. Clean nose, showing a moderately intense bouquet of citrus, dust, nutmeg, mint and pear. The wine is additionally slightly oxidized at this point. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and similar flavors as for the nose. Medium, smooth finish. Quite nice at this point, but showing signs that it best be consumed within the next 2-3 years. (3487 views)

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
