Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RichardP on 2/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Raspberry and plum on the nose. On the palate, plum, black cherry, raspberry, and notes of tapenade, black pepper, and savory spices, with moderate tannins on the medium to long finish, with good acidity. The Cellartracker drinking window on this is too short; it is well into maturity, but not past it, although looking at other tasting notes there's a lot of bottle variation. This threw some sediment, so decanting may be in order. This was an excellent value at about $40. (294 views)
Tasted by winesnout on 10/14/2023 & rated 92 points: The Mourvedere is very noticeable in the cuvee - and I like that. Other than that a Grenache-driven Gigondas that is now definitely reaching its peak: ripe plums, some pepper, dark chocolate, oriental spices and herbal notes. Long finish. Unfiltered as always, be careful when decanting. (366 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/27/2022: Wine-Ark lunch (McLeay Street Bistro, Potts Point): Jammy red berry - baked red fruits, a little sweet spice, gets more garrigue and meaty with time. Sweetly fruited, softly textured but the fruit is a little dried out and it's a bit tired for me. (1632 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 12/8/2021 flawed bottle: Badly corked (1538 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 11/16/2019 & rated 94 points: Well, purple and 5 to ten years from maturity. Only giving hints of its potential. 5/12/18/10. 2025-2035+ in a cool cellar. (2565 views)
Tasted by devraj on 10/27/2019 & rated 90 points: Coravined. Deep reddish purple in color. Wild nose that reveals aromas of pepper, balsam/soy, underbrush and graphite on a background of blackish-red fruits. Four-squared and masculine palate shows savory cooked plums with peppery brown gravy, intense influence of soy, medium (+) acidity, grippy tannins and a long saline and slightly astringent finish. This has definitely changed..., and interesting! (2340 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/19/2018: basicly gone; pruny, oxidized - a shame

Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 4/12/2018 & rated 89 points: Last bottle! This continues to be impressive, though not for the faint-hearted. Black pepper, soy and preserved plum on the nose. Rich, medium acidity, with plentiful tannins. Iron, niacin (does this read a bit like a cereal box?), beef broth, preserved plum, dark cherry and black tea, with a tannic, leafy finish. Long length. As I may have mentioned, this wine is a wild ride, certainly not for everyone. In fact, many may feel it is much too disjointed to be truly enjoyable. Still, it's kinda fun if you enjoy extreme sports and other activities that might put a curl in your hair. (2828 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 3/22/2018 & rated 90 points: PNP. Dark garnet core. Plum and maturing notes of dried leaves on the nose, with a bit of volatility (ink). Still quite tannic, just borderline approachable. Full-bodied, dry, but with a slight sweetness on the attack; balanced acidity. The alcohol is noticeable on the palate. Loads of ripe plum on the palate, some black pepper, showing a bit of maturity on the finish, but still on the ascent. The question is whether the tannins will finally resolve before the wine is over the hill. It will be a close call, I think. But this is definitely enjoyable if you like big, bold wines. (3012 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 7/23/2017 & rated 91 points: When this is on, it is really, really good. Very similar to my last note: fresh, primary, the Mourvedre competing with the Grenache for attention on the palate, the tannins not entirely resolved. Full-bodied, with a very long length. Lush fruit upfront (plum, cherry and blueberry), espresso, soy sauce, with a hint of char on the back end.

Having now tasted several bottles from the same case over the past few months, I can confirm that there is quite a bit of bottle variation. At worst, the wine seemed a bit tired and over the hill, but still quite enjoyable. At its best, it was a beast. Fortunately, more than half of the bottles fell within the latter category. (2650 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 4/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Wow, lots of bottle variation between this and the last one tasted just a few days ago. The last one seemed very mature: lots of tobacco and dried leaves -- seemingly at the end of its drinking window. This one could not be more different: much fresher, less bricking, very little sediment upon decanting, and no discernible secondary notes. The nose is fresh as a daisy (black pepper, molasses, gingerbread, asian spice and plum). Fairly full-bodied, still moderately tannic (though very enjoyable), with balanced acidity. The black pepper hits you upfront. Unlike the last bottle tasted, the Mourvedre is very apparent on the palate, providing a perfect foil for the lushness of the Grenache fruit. Really impressive, and appears to have several more years of life ahead. (2921 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 4/21/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark garnet core. Heavy Grenache nose of fruitcake, jam, molasses and Vitamin B, with some black pepper and more matures notes of celery, tobacco and spice. On the palate, the wine is surprisingly dry, with balanced acidity and reasonably resolved tannins (there was a heavy deposit upon decanting). Full-bodied, with the fruit (mostly plum, blueberry, fig and cherry) still very much alive, giving way to some black pepper and tobacco on the midpalate, with a refreshing and slightly astringent, tea-like finish. My only nit is that the wine does not hide its hefty (15%) alcohol content. Personally, I find that aged Grenache can be a bit off-putting because the flavor profile that gives Grenache its characteristic exuberance doesn't necessarily go well with more mature notes that would otherwise be very desirable in, say, Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. Still, the wine somehow manages to pull off this odd balancing act, though I suspect many may disagree. And I would not wait much longer to pull the cork. (2603 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/20/2017: Weekly tasting group RWP #249: Rhône; Gigondas (@ VD): In the bouquet a complex wine with chocolate, tea, earth, soy, celery, earth and autumn impressions. On the palate the first impression is that the wine is not a 100% fresh, but there is juicy fruit, some chocolate, good acidity and soft and ripe tannin. I did not score the wine. (2809 views)
Tasted by beatles on 2/8/2017 & rated 88 points: A rough, powerful, dry wine, so far from the vintage; this needs food, tannins are still serious, but I doubt, this will ever find complete balance. Like the Yves Gras of late much better, this was never my favorite cuvée... (2692 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 9/15/2016 & rated 91 points: Very dark core, with thin garnet rim. Oodles of dark cherry and plum upfront on the nose, with plenty of ink and oak in the background. After a couple of hours in the decanter, the wine offers up an amazing array of sweet fruit on the attack, yet the enjoyment is still cut short by a wall of persistent tannins. Compared to my last experience tasting this several years ago, this is much more enjoyable, yet I wonder if the wine will settle into its imposing frame while the fruit remains at its peak. That is the question. (2423 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 8/4/2016 & rated 92 points: Nice rhone liquid . Bought at the domaine . Medium nose , medium body , medium finish ! Quite rustic !! Maybe wait 2 more years to soften the tannins . But will it become very good ??? I dont think so. (2734 views)
Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 3/6/2016 & rated 87 points: Rather nice bottle, though still with a fiercely tannic finish. My previous note must have been an "off" bottle, as this bottle is untainted, fresh and, relatively speaking, fruity. It remains a wine "not for the faint-hearted". (2683 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 1/3/2016 & rated 83 points: This batch appears to be on the decline. Overall experience with this wine (9 bottles out of a case) has been disappointing (2897 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 11/16/2015 & rated 83 points: Bretty. This formula doesn't work for me... (2795 views)
Tasted by Dury on 2/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Day one: gripping tannins; the intense garrigue that was prevalent upon release is largely gone. Still there were hints of garrigue integrated with (dried) dark fruit e.g. some prune but in a unoffensive way. Medium finish.

Day two: tannins more approachable. Still a nice wine; time will tell how tannins resolve themselves. (3408 views)
Tasted by BrunswickFarm on 1/19/2015 & rated 92 points: bright crimson, rich black/red fruits, herbs, garrigue, warm, chocolatey notes, rich, deep, delicious fruit, with big structure and lovely rounded tannins - long finish and built to last. (3432 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 10/18/2014 & rated 94 points: Deeply coloured, ruby red with black core.
Rich bright Grenache nose, minerals, sweet fruits, fragrant, inky.
Medium weight, supple, creamy texture with a big finish of blueberry essence and with powerful fine furry tannins.
Ink, tar, pepper, plums, zesty mineral spice. Rich, youthful, and very long. Complex now, age may soften it but perhaps unlikely to improve it. Superb now. (3512 views)
Tasted by devraj on 9/5/2014 & rated 93 points: Coravined. Deep red with purple highlights. After about 30 min in the glass, the nose is greeted with very expressive aromas of dark currants, black cherries, licorice, camphor and charcoal. A full bodied palate reveals concentrated ripe black fruits, good depth and flesh on the mid-palate, low to medium acidity and a long finish that hides the grippy tannins in the background.  Tasted by wineismylife on 11/27/2013 & rated 90 points: WIML90

Tasted non blind at a wine tasting.

Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. Nose of leather, pepper, berries and a bit of licorice. Flavors of berries, Bing cherries and raspberries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannin, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. (4563 views)
Tasted by Biglama on 10/30/2013 & rated 93 points: plaatje van een wijn, zeer aangenaam, was de tweede dag zelfs nog mooier, topper (3695 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
