Tasted by Neodoc1253 on 1/27/2023 & rated 100 points: After reading some comments I was skeptical opening this wine.. Shared with my wife few days ago at dinner…. This wine is magical. After 30 minutes decant started evolving. I am very happy I tried 98 vintage. (1290 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 12/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Very Enjoyable. (2773 views)
Tasted by BROpus One on 3/22/2020 & rated 97 points: Second bottle of this vintage I've had and it was equally as wonderful as the first time. If you're a bordeaux lover then Harlan is the Napa wine for you. This only needed a 1-2 hour decant and she drank beautifully over the next couple of hours. No need to hold this vintage any longer to get the best out of it. (4065 views)
Tasted by LongViewCellars on 2/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Drank at Harlan dinner with 10 other vintages. This was in the middle of the pack. Solid showing, but wasn't blown away. (3782 views)
Tasted by BROpus One on 12/1/2019 & rated 97 points: Probably the best Napa I’ve ever had. As much of a bordeaux style as I imagine a Napa cab can be?? From nose, to palate, to finish I found this to be exceptionally enjoyable. Look forward to more. (3594 views)
Tasted by Marc on 8/14/2019 & rated 93 points: Grand Designs Reveal Week - Dinner #2 (Wedge House, Queensberry, Central Otago, New Zealand): Certainly at full-maturity. The terry character on the nose feels quite Bordeaux-like, as does the palate, with the difference in thickness of fruit and abroad tannic structure, which is quite unlike Bordeaux, flavour spectrum apart. As per normal, the wine uses VA as a defining aspect of the wine. As per normal, the VA works, although not as successfully as the "monster" vintages. Some cedar, currant fruit, green leaf, and thick structural elements gives this wine outstanding dimension and complexity. As a wine, excellent, but knowing the heights that Harlan can reach (considering its style), not the greatest vinatge. (3768 views)
Tasted by Ruby99 on 11/24/2018 & rated 97 points: Sweet red fruits waft from the glass
Drinking incredibly right now: Still big and tannic, but mellowing. Big and rich with plums and black fruits predominating in a long finish. Perfectly balanced and one of the greatest California wines I've had (3537 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 1/2/2018 & rated 98 points: This was gifted to me from my dearest, departed friend Wayne. I’ve waited for a while to open. It’s the only one I have or have ever had. Enjoyed with my good wine buddies, Stan, Christian and Dave. What an absolutely amazing accomplishment! A superb, spectacular creation. There’s an enormous amount of fruit and soft, but deep tannins. Would have benefited from hour and half to two hour decant. Too alluring to let sit once tasted. A huge, robust, full, Cabernet experience. Shame it’s the only one I had. Would estimate 8-10 years to full maturity. (3218 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/11/2017 & rated 92 points: Palais. Fruity, vivacious. (3072 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 11/27/2017 & rated 86 points: Deep purple color with a lot of sediment. Bouquet and flavor of tobacco, like its Thanksgiving brother, marred by some harshness in the finish. This was a Katrina wine and may have paid the price, but I have found no consistent evidence of adverse effects from this monster Hurricane, at least on my wines. Similar to the wine tasted on just before Thanksgiving. (3077 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 11/22/2017 & rated 87 points: Deep purple color with a bouquet and flavor dominated by tobacco with some barely discernable fruit. Limited nuance with balance marred by the roughness of the tobacco flavor (not Chateau Haut Brion). Still, quite drinkable. This was a Katrina wine and may have come to some harm, but I have not found this to be a consistent finding in wines that weathered the storm. (2760 views)
Tasted by canan on 10/28/2017 & rated 96 points: BYO - US wines (Trio): There is plenty of fresh black currant fruit with an impressive acidity and long aftertaste.
This wine is all about a very impressive balance. Great stuff! (2994 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 9/6/2017 & rated 97 points: Very deep garnet. Charming and complex aroma of floral, mixed blackberries and ripe plum, earthy, dusty, smoky, leather, savoury, wood spices, getting ready. On palate very typical Bordeaux notes of forest floor, mineral, pencil lead, coffee bean. Very layered and deep. So long. A powerful vintage for Harlan. (2259 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 4/5/2017 & rated 97 points: Lead pencil, chocolate, sweet red fruit, light toasted vanilla oak. Soft tannins and great structure. Ripe blackberry and soy. Elegant layers unfold on your tongue. Good mature fruit. Not heavy or dense, but great depth and complexity. Bright fruit, but a soft mouthfeel. Excellent wine! Opened 1 hour before drinking and did not decant. (2689 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/11/2016 flawed bottle: Maderised and undrinkable ... What a shame (3109 views)
Tasted by DrinkBordeaux on 11/19/2016 & rated 92 points: No formal notes taken. Was enjoyable, but I've had far better vintages from Harlan. Somewhat one-dimensional. (2672 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/10/2015 flawed bottle: An honest flaw in the bottle. Not totally corked but strangely stewed and cloudy. Probably a bad fill with too much oxygen. Real shame as the '99 was just starting to make it interesting. (4147 views)
Tasted by JDV.DDSPHD on 4/7/2014 & rated 95 points: Okay so I will be the first to admit that I may score this higher because of the name. But I was expecting 100 pts from this. This is a knockout wine. Just blows the doors off the place however in my opinion it was not better than the winter which is a fraction of the cost. This is still a powerhouse of a wine and outstanding. Loaded with fruit still. This could age another decade easily. You can start to get those secondary characteristics which made it amazing because it was so fluid that all the components blended together but were distinct. It was hard to describe. Phenomenal and something to remember. (5568 views)
Tasted by Marc on 12/28/2013 & rated 94 points: Quite mature in appearance but still extremely saturated in colour. The nose is very warm and has significant VA lift but also beautifully pure and intense cassis aromas. Very dimensional nose that features refined oak handling, some farmyard and hints of herbal notes. In the mouth, very full bodied with a warm alcoholic finish and a plush texture. Very complex and layered, if not profound - this is new wave Napa in an extremely accomplished manner. Long and complete - a fabulous wine in the Harlan style. Drinking well now but I am reasonably certain this has at least 10 years of positive evolution ahead of it. 94+ (5109 views)
Tasted by hkm520240 on 11/8/2013 & rated 94 points: 90s Napa Cabernet Dinner (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, Forum): In this flight, 3 wines from different price range were put together for blind tasting.
Third wine in the flight, deep garnet with vibrant crimson hue, the darkest colour in this flight. Decanted for 1hour+ but still tight and pungent. After another hour in the glass it gradually open up to show complex and fragrant nose of blackcurrant, plum, pepper, mint and hints of tobacco.
Still big and youthful palate, opulent wine and structured, showing ripe fruits, blackcurrant, chocolate, peppery notes and hints of oak. Strong mid-palate, ripe and grippy tannins, finishes long.
Not a fantastic wine but it could be the star or the Vin de Garde of 1998 Napa Cab judging from the difficult vintage. It did impressed me with ripe and primary fruits that showing good aging potential. Best among the 3 1998 tasted tonight. 14.5% ABV, same as Stag's Leap Cask 23. (6042 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 11/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Opened and decanted for three hours. Had rich stewed fruit and lots of structure. Very long finish but not the layers from other harlan (6393 views)
Tasted by Revenga on 12/31/2011 & rated 90 points: HKCC NY Lunch. Decanted 1 hr. 750 ml. Appearance: super dark ink, black. Nose: concentrated red fruit medley, a little too uniform for me Taste: rich, fleshy, concentrated, but without classic old world notes. Cassis, brambles tart, vanilla sundae, etc. A lot of sediment, decant carefully. My first Harlan...sorry, but not in my cellar in the near future.. (affordability, and personal liking...) (6309 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 11/10/2011 & rated 88 points: Hermitage event in HK with Robert P, Lisa and Neal: Perhaps not a great bottle - concentration and intensity did shine through, but it was dominated by and almost medical cabinet smell, noticed this in a prior Harlan as well, so perhaps just not my thing (5835 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 11/26/2010 & rated 90 points: Opened, decanted and let sit for an hour; it unfolded slowly but improved as more air entered. This was not an "over the top" wine at all; medium bodied and a nice compliment to our Thanksgiving meal. The last drop was the best! Not terribly compicated or multidimensional. Just a nice, but overpriced, wine. (5293 views)

Harlan Estate

Producer website - Read more about Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 by H. William Harlan with the vision to consistently produce a wine of the highest quality and great longevity from the estate – in essence, to create a “First Growth” of California. Each year, the wine of Harlan Estate strives to faithfully express the abiding character of the land, and the distinctive attributes of the vintage.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
