Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 115 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wicozani on 6/27/2023 & rated 91 points: Pours a purplish ruby out to the clearing edges with no bricking. The nice nose beckons with cassis, blueberry compote, and underbrush. Medium+-bodied with the best acidity of the previous three bottles. Paired nicely with Instant Pot tomatoey beef stew This is the best showing we've had yet. (270 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 8/2/2020 & rated 92 points: Still wonderful. Another 2-3 yrs easily for this bottle. See previous tasting notes. (1620 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 7/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Another great bottle of this over-achieving wine. (1540 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 6/14/2020 & rated 92 points: Same impressions as March bottles, so perfect with perfect filets. (1585 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 3/30/2020 & rated 93 points: As last/recently described... FANTASTIC aged Spring Mtn Merlot! (1676 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 3/11/2020 & rated 92 points: Wonderful black fruit and dark plum. Rich fruit with apportioned grip. Markedly better than previous bottle. (1504 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 3/7/2020 & rated 88 points: A "new" 6-pack of an all-timer from a long-time and respected source. Wonderful dark color, no signs of rust or bricking. However, dominating green notes and drying, unripe tannins mask the underlying dark fruit, not a previously experienced condition. Fat content of filets almost totally mitigates the palate difference. 5 more bottles of hope to evaluate. (745 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 8/11/2019 & rated 94 points: Notes from April 13th still apply, yet this bottle even more dense, concentrated, and slightly less advanced. Decanted, a fair amount of sediment both in the wine and adhered to the bottle. Drink now and enjoy Spring Mountain's greatest merlot (IMHO)! (969 views)
Tasted by Brad Tsai on 6/25/2019 & rated 92 points: Still excellent! (1004 views)
Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 4/13/2019 & rated 93 points: Almost any bottle of Paloma Merlot is delicious, and in exceptional years it's great, this 15-yr example being no exception. Rich, round, dark cherry and currant with a long, very smooth/resolved finish. Mature without tasting old is always a good thing. Drink over the next 2 yrs. (938 views)
Tasted by Mneumeier on 9/9/2018 & rated 91 points: Drinking great right now. No need to hold it any longer. No need to decant. (1104 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 3/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Similar notes as previous tastings (1407 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 1/28/2018: Dense dark red (almost black) color, black cherry, black current, chocolate nose which intensifies over time. Dense dark berry fruit was very smooth, tannins integrated, some notes of coffee and a long, long smooth finish. (1182 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 11/12/2017 & rated 93 points: Similar notes as previous tastings. (1337 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 6/7/2017 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well now. Black cherries and currants in the nose with hints of chocolate, coffee, and minerals. Black cherries, plums, and chocolate in the flavor. Well balanced and a long finish. (1685 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 11/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Second Sunday Group: Paloma Merlot Vertical (Our house): Notes of violets and florals with red berries, cherry and plum underneath. Integrated tannins. Flavors of cherries, chocolate and macerated red berries. Finishes with nice length and balance.

My #1, Domino's #2
Group #1, 28 pts (2307 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Double decanted off its sediment and uncorked again a couple of hours later with dinner. Red and black fruit notes dominate although there's a ripe, raisiny streak running through this that I do not care for. Softened tannins with nice fruit on the palate but again, there's a ripeness to it. I expected more from this, and suspect other bottles will live up to expectations and I'll chalk this one up to bottle variation. (2012 views)
Tasted by ipp on 4/20/2016 & rated 91 points: rest in piece Barbara (2011 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 1/30/2016 & rated 91 points: Took to a party, so no detailed notes. Silky. Slightly sweet and slightly earthy. Surprisingly tannic, it is NOT over the hill, but I would still recommend drinking any remaining bottles this year. (1974 views)
Tasted by Marthambles on 3/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Beautifully aromatic. Did not come truly alive until the second day. Not too sweet, and just mildly acidic. Yum. (2767 views)
Tasted by Renot on 2/23/2015 & rated 92 points: Still very good, not showing the signs of age that I was expecting. It needed a little time in the glass to hit its stride, and was very enjoyably balanced when it did. (2106 views)
Tasted by cpdwines on 2/14/2015 & rated 93 points: Nice Valentines present to both of us. Very ready to be drank now, but has some time (not much) left on it. (1801 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 7/26/2014 & rated 90 points: Opened at a party, so no detailed notes. No signs of age. After about an hour of air (not decanted), it had opened up nicely. Great balance (NOT over-the-hill), a hint of earthiness, silky texture, and a solid finish. (2325 views)
Tasted by sw92130 on 7/2/2014 & rated 93 points: Opened last night for dinner with grilled steak. I'm starting to get concerned about Palomas that are this old, and my first impression was not that great. I thought this had passed it's prime. But fortunately I was quite wrong. After about 1 hr in a decanter, it really came to life. Very deep fruit with a great mouthfeel. It turned out to be a crowd-pleaser and upheld my faith in Paloma Merlot! (2259 views)
Tasted by Renot on 11/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour, but the wine improved significantly with an hour of air. Plenty of structure left, smooth and silky finish. Excellent! (2367 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
